I annually have to make a trip between…read moreCalgary and Brandon, and have stopped here during several of those trips, as this is the kind of place that employed my father back in the 1950s and 1960s, when Chinese immigrants started coming to Canada, and these small town restaurants were often the only place they could find work. The people who run this business have been there forever and have a loyal local clientele as I saw several people chatting with the Chinese woman who was serving them, and they all seemed familiar to each other. For my lunch, I wanted something that was a little more of a traditional Chinese dish, but nothing elaborate: curry chicken with vegetables and rice. I had noted that the last time they made it for me here, they used cauliflower as the only vegetable. I asked the other waitress on duty if they would just make it with onions, as the traditional way of making this was with onions and green peppers. A few minutes later, she apologetically came back to say the kitchen refused to cook it that way. I found it odd, so I said "okay, make it with just chicken so it's as simple as can be." A few minutes later, she said the answer was still no. I asked to speak to the Chinese woman (who I could speak Chinese with), and she said it was something they wouldn't do normally, and if I really wanted the dish, they would charge me nearly triple the price on the menu. At that point, I just said make me their number 4 combo plate, which was lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork, and fried rice; all westernized Chinese food. It was edible, but nothing I would have come out of my way for. When I went to pay our bill, I told my server i couldn't understand what the issue was. As someone who had grown up in a Chinese restaurant, I knew how the dish was prepared, and I was trying to make it easier for the restaurant, and something that was of higher value and profit margin. The server told me that the person in the kitchen didn't like making special arrangements for customers for whatever reason. I guess this is the last time I come here.

Not sure if I would think this way in more larger towns. It is really nothing to look at. It is not really decorated in any which way and it doesn't scream "Cookhouse". It more screams like my aunt's dining room. When we were there, there was one server and she was AMAZING but run off her feet. Really for the amount of people in the place (during COVID) it was full. She did an awesome job being upbeat, friendly and fast as she could be. We were sure to tip her well. It is a typical bar food menu. My kid and I not being bar food type chose the pad Thai - one with shrimp and one with chicken. My husband had the chicken bacon club and my little one had the kids grilled cheese. It was a while for the food to come, but it was expected because of how busy it was. Food came and it was really good. My kiddo and I were not expecting much for a bar but the pad Thai was really different than what we are used to but equally delicious. It had an amazing peanut sauce and the portion was huge. I couldn't eat it all. I really rate restaurants on how well they do a kids plate, and this one was great. The grilled cheese was on speciality bread and had two kinds of cheese on it. I sneaked a bite and it was delicious. My husband was happy with his sandwich. All in all a good meal.

Menu was super interesting....some usual home town café things (burgers, Chinese food, pizza). I decided on the Turkish spinach style pizza (called pide), my kiddo tried the chicken masala, my little one noodles with tomato sauce, and my husband the special which was halibut and shrimp scampi. Everything came in a timely manner (considering they were backlogged) and everything was delicious. I often grade restaurants on the kids menu. Often it is just quick instant slop that is thrown on a plate. I like it when restaurants make the food healthy and delicious but palatable for little ones. I could have eaten this pasta. It was flavourful and lovely and plated well. My pide was delicious and huge. My husband's dish had a nice spicy flavour that none of us were expecting. The best dish though, was the chicken masala. It was delicious. Amazing sauce to the chicken. If they could do this in a tofu or veggie dish that would be my go to. I felt the prices were a little high for small town Saskatchewan but definitely worth it. Check it out if you are in the area.

It was evident to me that the chef takes great pride in their cooking and in the cleanliness of their restaurant. The servers, related to the chef, were also delightfully polite and helpful. Ask them what they recommend. Too bad I'm just passing through town or I'd eat here frequently. Prices are very fair.

Been to Elkwater before and it's nice to have this gem in the middle of the flat and desolate prairies. Anyway, we've mostly run out of things to do within an hour driving distance (there's a baby in tow) and I was a bit reluctant to go back to Elkwater again. She mentioned Camp Cookhouse and how the chef there won some award or was on TV or something. I'm like, "Yeah, sure," and just shrug my shoulders. So we get there and the menu is simple but full of good things. I get the short ribs, she gets a burger, and her mom gets soup. I'm still not really impressed at this point but the service was very friendly. Well, I get my short ribs, take a bite, and immediately I'm sold! The taste was just so succulent, amazing, and perfect! I have so many other words to describe it! Not one bone present and they were just full of meat and saucy goodness. Friend's burger was also amazing and very well crafted. This was the type of food would be expect to find in a big city, not a rural lakeside restaurant. Seriously, everyone...make your way here and enjoy the food! You will not be disappointed at all. If you are, message me and I want to hear all about it :)

Had the burger and fries one night, burger buns are made in house, and it was very tasty. Ribs the next night, tasty, but I wish they removed the silver skin off the ribs before smoking. Portion sizes are good, pricing is fair, local beers and wines/Mead's to wash it all down. I like everything they are doing here, you can't complain about much when everything is locally sourced and made in house, far too many restaurants don't do this type of thing and it's a shame.
