I have found Master Bosco Baek to be a dedicated and informative teacher who cares deeply about his students' success. He is not only an excellent teacher, but in addition, he is a highly accomplished practitioner, as well. It had all the right worlds on the window glass, so I stuck my head in. Master Kim greeted me nicely and warmly, answering a few questions, and I walked out with a brochure. When I got to my car to leave I stopped. I've had a bronchial cough for over a month, I haven't felt 100%, and was at my wits end. I believe in all the modalities of healing listed in the brochure, though I am skeptical. I know there are practitioners and there are healers. Feeling that this was a G_d bump, I went back upstairs opened the door to a surprised Kim that I had returned so soon. We went over how I was feeling and, because of the grace that Kim extended, warily I decided to do an individual session, hesitating a little at the price. But with G_d bumps I choose to say yes. Without a doubt, a wonderful healing experience! I walked out the door an hour later feeling a burden had been lifted from my entire body. I don't know how other locations are but, I do know that because Master Kim is there, I am going to drive all the way from Pasadena to KoreaTown to take classes with him several days in the upcoming weeks. What Master Kim offers in healing is priceless! Phil Z

tl;dr -- book with Paolo, it's going to feel so good & healing!…read more Paolo has been my acupuncturist for the past year, and each experience has been nothing short of amazing. He's treated a wide range of issues with me, including: allergies, immunity, chronic sciatica, shoulder/neck strains, and inflammation. We've done both cupping and acupuncture regularly (sometimes weekly, sometimes monthly, depending on my needs). Some treatments have more immediate and obvious effects (for example, certain treatments for physical pain), while some were less obvious but holistically beneficial nonetheless (for example, I had severe (inhaler-requiring) cat allergies for over a year, but they subsided within 1 month of living with a cat + acupuncture. While I never walked out of an acupuncture session feeling like "wow my allergies are gone now", I doubt my body would have acclimated so quickly without the ongoing acupuncture!). Furthermore, the experience of the visit itself is great. Paolo will listen without judgment, genuinely care, and do everything to make you feel comfortable (asking consent, not making assumptions, asking if you are comfortable with xyz). There's heat lamps, ambient music, mood lighting -- it's a great time. I've experienced more traditional acupuncture clinics with elder Korean men as acupuncturists before working with Paolo, and I can never go back to that. I've never felt as not-judged, heard, and cared for as I have with Paolo. Last little bit -- I took my boyfriend to Paolo for his first ever acupuncture sessions, and he enjoyed it! There were things my boyfriend did or didn't like at each session, and he was able to express that to Paolo, then Paolo was able to adapt the next session to be more comfortable for him (things like, wanting to listen to his own music, disliking ear acupuncture, and enjoying cupping). If you're looking for an acupuncturist who will listen to you, put your comfort first, and, of course, do great work, book with Paolo.

The last 6 years, Steve Grody has been my primary instructor. With the rise of promotions like the UFC, the idea of what martial arts are has gratefully changed. There's still a discernment that needs to come into public consciousness- sport vs. non-sport. Steve's training might be described primarily as "non-sport" oriented, though of course much of what is taught would be relevant, even novel, in any combative context. Styles might also be put aside when considering Steve's studio. While his lineage is Jeet Kune Do (AKA "JKD" via the great Dan Inosanto, asked to carry the torch for Bruce Lee) and Kali (via the equally great Edgar Sulite), there's equal measures of Muay Thai, western boxing, and other relevant combative arts. Would also note here that Steve goes to some lengths to consider self and situational awareness, as well as issues that ought to be "common sense" when looking at being prepared for most likely, to least likely combative eventualities. Use of available and legal weapons (both carried and improvised) are addressed in great detail. The training is of equal utility for men, women, older and younger persons. The material is organized in a more clearsighted and useable way than I've ever seen. Intensity of training is based solely on the abilities of the student. Training is always comfortable but challenging, and always fun. Hours of instruction are flexible. As John said above, despite how long I have been seeing Steve in private instruction, I always leave with a chunk of material that improves my performance as a "martial artist". Am always grateful for feeling when I leave the studio that Steve has done most of the work in separating what is useful vs. what might not be, if some aggressive circumstance were to arise. A rarity in the millennium- I can wholly recommend Steve's instruction. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me here through my profile.

I first saw Steve Grody's video series on Empty Handed fighting using Filipino Kali (like what Jason Bourne's character uses in the new movies now) back in 1994, and it made me focus my studies on the martial arts from that area. Recently, I discovered his downtown studio and have started training there. His studio is conveniently located a couple miles off the 110 freeway, and pretty easy to get to. Its got a lot of room and character, and a lot of good equipment. How's the instruction? I wish I would have studied with Steve 15 years ago. I am a very new student of his, but even after 15 years, every class I walk away with a ton of new ideas, concepts, and material. I consider his instruction to be truly top-shelf stuff. He's very down-to-earth, and really wants to make sure that you're learning the material. He teaches Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's martial art) and the Filipino arts (which encompass grappling, striking, kicking, knives, stick fighting, nerve strikes, trapping, knees, elbows, headbutts, and so much more). These are the arts that the choreographer used when making the film the Bourne Identity, and the style they gave his character. I encourage you to go to his website (stevegrody.com) and pick up a couple of his DVD's to check it out for yourself. They're just the tip of the iceberg. I have hundreds of martial arts DVD's I've bought over the years, but his are some of the few that I go back to over and over again. 5 stars, all the way. If I sound like I'm enthusiastic, I am. Although LA is an incredible place to study a wide variety of arts, good martial arts teachers are very few and far-between. Steve's a great one. That's pretty rare.
