He communicated the time of picking and was right on time. Fabrizio is a funny and knowledgeable man and we thought he'd known us like family from the start. After the 14day cruise was over, Fabrizio picked us up in Civitavecchia and transferred us to the Leonardo Da Vinci-Fiumicino airport (FCO) in record time. One thing to mention is...my wife left something in Fabrizio 's van the day he took us to the cruise ship and he took care of it and brought it back to her the day he picked us up. What a super man. I would highly recommend Fabrizio and Allarounditaly to anyone needing a pick up or tour in Italy, Rome, Florence and the Almalfi coast. My experience was different from many others in that it wasn't atrocious. LOL. I booked my tour…read moreto Mt Vesuvius/Pompeii from Rome BEFORE I saw these reviews and honestly if I did I wouldn't have booked it. I was told to be at their main offices at 7:30am sharp on a Saturday morning but the doors/gates were closed as of 7:15am. An employee of a nearby merchant was insistent that I was waiting in the wrong spot for my tour, stating that the street leading to the office was extremely narrow and no way a tour bus would fit down the block leading to their office. Since the office was a block away from Roma Termini station, he made good logic that perhaps I was supposed to board at Roma Termini. Needless to say this left me scrambling to run over to Roma Termini asking anyone I could find where this company tour bus was. After no help there I walked back to GLT offices and finally someone showed up to open the doors and gates closer to 8am than 7:30am which I was told. After two other folks showed up, my group was walked down the block to a waiting bus. The drive down to Mt Vesuvius was three hours long and without traffic on a Saturday morning. Two stops were made along the way, once at a shop that makes interesting jewelry pieces out of sea shells, to be honest it was clearly an opportunity to steer tourists to spend some money. I was lucky that the group of tourists on this trip knew this was the case and got back on the bus quickly after we were subjected to a short presentation of how they made the pieces. I understand this is how tours work but I'm just here for the main event. From there we made our way to the base of Mt Vesuvius and transferred to an open top bus. We met up with an outstanding tour guide there, extremely knowledgeable and super friendly. We spent about an hour walking around Mt Vesuvius then had to get back on the bus down the mountain. Honestly would have liked to have more time here but understand the schedule was tight. From there we headed to Pompeii and had lunch near the ruins. Lunch was included in the cost of the tour but honestly not great. Again I'm here for the main event not lunch. Pompeii was by far the highlight of the tour. We met up with an extremely knowledgeable tour guide there who provided a wealth of information. It was just an amazing experience to be in Pompeii and while I would have liked to have more time here, but again understood the tight schedule. While GLT can't take credit for the Pompeii ruins, they successfully transported me there and this was the highlight of my trip to Italy. If you take this tour know that it takes 3 hours each way. I took this tour after a week of 20k steps each day in Rome so giving my feet/legs a rest on a 6 hour drive wasn't a bad idea. Know that there will be one stopover to try and sell you stuff. Know that you will feel rushed but the experience, especially Pompeii will leave you fulfilled. I was lucky to take this tour before the busy season so traffic was lighter and there was a total of 6 people on my tour bus. The tour guides, tour lead, & bus driver couldn't have been better. So I deducted 1 star for the unnecessary grief to start the tour, if I was given the right information on when to show up, it would have been a 5.

You have to see it before you die. No photograph, no movie, can fully conjure the real thing. Its scale, its majesty, the psychic bridge it provides to a violent and fascinating past. Standing in the Colosseum is about as close as I've gotten to time travel. We booked a three-hour tour with Crown Tours, covering the Forum, Palatine Hill, and the Colosseum. This was definitely the way to go. I loved both the simplified logistics and the live, on-site history lesson. That said, if you're not the guided tour type, the Colosseum does kind of speak for itself. We went around noon on a Friday during low season, when it was busy but nowhere near peak crowding. I imagine a summertime visit with kids would be pretty uncomfortable. But the Colosseum is worth a fair amount of physical suffering. Maybe not being mauled and eaten by lions, but definitely a little body odor and heat. The Colosseum is both the largest standing amphitheater in the world and the largest ancient amphitheater ever built. These may be the least surprising facts I've ever read on Wikipedia. The place is named for its colossal size, and honestly that alone would make it worth visiting. The size, though, is maybe its third or fourth most notable feature. The architecture is iconic. I was about to start describing it, but everyone knows what the Colosseum looks like: it looks like the Colosseum. It looks both more and less like the Colosseum up close and from within. I don't remember the striations in the travertine walls from any history books. The interior is breathtaking. Our guide sat us down and we gawked at the tiered seating and arena of this enormous world wonder, a place that once accommodated some 50,000 spectators for any given event, where an estimated 400,000 people and a million animals met violent ends. It's kind of wild that any of this was a) allowed and b) how people got their kicks, but the enthusiasm for brutality is comprehensible enough in 2025. I know exactly who would be in the stands with popcorn, watching people whose lives hold no value for them fighting to the death. Our tour ended on the ground floor of the Colosseum, and we wandered the upper level on our own, looking down at the arena and the exposed underground, which required its own ticket and didn't seem to have many visitors. We visited the gift shop and bought a postcard for our kids, though I don't quite know how to explain this place to our five- and three-year-old sons. I hope to bring them in person one day, when they're older and more knowledgeable about the ways of the world. There might be heat, there might be crowds, but they'll have to see the Colosseum.
