For families it's an emotional process and unfortunately when we are at our most vulnerable, it's important to have someone who can conduct business along side us so you're not taken advantage. Don't let anyone quote the law to you, read it for yourself and know the laws that govern their ethical behaviors, practices and procedures. There's little oversight over funeral directors, it's the "good ole boy" network and some are dishonest, despicable and are no closer to God than the Disciples themselves. Actually, some are straight Judas. Unfortunately, some are not to be trusted so I'm going to share some tips to look out for when planning a funeral. Know that you can buy a casket from Costco or Titan and they can't deny you. Look at the prices compared to what they charge you. A 300% mark-up. Request a line item of charges, they must provide. Funeral Directors have licenses for a period of time and they are renewed by completing educational. In NJ any unethical practices are publish publicly on the following website https://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/mor/Pages/actions.aspx You want to make sure you research who can bury who, the deceased last will and testament and what spouses can & can't do. It can be very difficult especially when everyone is operating on their own agendas. The Federal Trade Commission has published Funeral Rules. I ask the family did they request that the obituary not be published and was told no, it should be published by now. The staff did not provide important information that families may not know to ask about. When people are grieving, they rely on the funeral home to explain the process, discuss available options, and make sure nothing important is overlooked. Instead, I felt that essential information was withheld unless I specifically asked the right questions--questions that someone with no experience arranging funeral services would not even know to ask. I expected guidance, compassion, and clear communication, but unfortunately, that was not my experience. Families should be able to trust that they are being fully informed without having to guess what questions to ask. I hope the funeral home improves its communication and takes a more proactive approach to helping families during such a difficult time.
