For starters, my lack of Danish made reading and understanding the menu pretty darn difficult, so I was reassured by my very patient waitress as she helped to translate it until I found a vegetarian/fish dish. Per her recommendation, I decided on the pumpkin soup and salmon smorrebrød. When the soup came out, I took one bite and realized it was NOT pumpkin soup. It was some sort of meat soup. I sat for a while twiddling my thumbs, wishing I had a bottle of wine rather than one glass, wondering if I should just respectfully eat it and deal with the stomach ache that would potentially follow, or if I should continue my role as the obnoxious American and send it back. Due to my immense fear of vomit I opted for the latter. When I asked if it had meat, the food runner sort of chuckled. I thought: "Ok yes sir, I know there are hunks of animal flesh in there I just don't know how to navigate this situation." I felt really bad but I could tell he did too. He apologized profusely for the mixup and brought out my pumpkin soup (sidebar: the soup came out in a Mini saucepan. How cute). When the pumpkin soup came out I devoured it....aaand it ended up being free! I don't have any photos from the meal because I was truly enjoying my first TRUE solo sit-down, multi-course meal.

The hollandaise sauce for the cod was spot on and the vegetables were fresh. Does New Nordic cuisine justice. My date rated this as the best meal of our trip in Denmark. We also had the fish soup which was art for the eyes. Dappled with green oil and delicate salmonl. Yummy. Good eating. We enjoyed the wine selection. When we entered the restaurant, the employees kindly greeted us, although they and the other customers looked surprised to see us. I guess that they are not accustomed to foreigners eating there? Well, their reactions actually meant that I was in the *correct* place! I want to eat where the locals eat. The employees spoke some English to explain how to order on the Danish-language menu by using a separate page with English descriptions. Sandwiches included ingredients such as herring, shrimps, egg, potato, ham, roast beef, liver pate, brisket, and meatballs. My husband is not adventurous with foods, but I am! And I greatly enjoyed the quality, freshness, and flavors of the Kryddersild (pickled herring with onion and capers), Roastbeef (roast beef with remoulade, horseradish, and fried onions), Ribbensteg (pork rib roast with red cabbages and cucumber salad), and Frikadeller m/kartoffelsalat (meatballs with potato salad). The total price for these four sandwiches plus a soda and a water was 415 Danish Krones, which equals about $64 USD.

We are guests in the nearby Skagen Harbour Hotel, and as such, we receive a 15% discount, on their already reasonable prices!! What a deal!!! Upon being seated we were hosted to a glass of champagne. We shared the lobster croquettes for our starter, and at only 75 DKK, this was outstanding value. These were more like fish/lobster cakes, but still very tasty. For our mains, we ordered the house specially, pan fried plaice (flounder). This was delicious with the berry sauce. It's served whole, and very easy to debone (filet). The deck seating area is very big, covered from the elements and also has portable electric heaters as well as fleece blankets are available at every table top to keep you warm as you enjoy the view and food. Will definitely be back when visiting the beaches of Skagen!

Pretty standard tourist place…read more My girlfriend and I visited this place for lunch after a 5 hour drive from Copenhagen. We were both starving and ordered two "Stjerneskud" with a couple of Saaz Blondes. Now, Skagen lies very close to the ocean and has a great harbor. Thus the fish was very fresh. But the dish was rather boring. The shrimps were small and were placed next to the dish instead of incorporated. The asparagus were cut in small pieces, which were a shame seeing as they were rather fresh. The halibut was not well tasting and the dressing was tasteless. The dish was also stuffed with lettuce, which made the dish even worse. All of this was placed on a piece of very dry and hard bread. As you might have noticed this was not one of my better food experiences. So why the three stars? Well, the service was very polite and the atmosphere was cosy. And I almost fell of my chair when they offered us free coffee and cake for dessert. The price was pretty standard for a tourist place. One beer was 55 kr. and the "Stjerneskud" was 130 kr. All over a rather pleasant experience even though the food was very mediocre.
