The park land follows the Isar River as it wends northwards from the nearby Alps through Grünwald to Munich. We use it almost every day -- walking the dogs, running, mountain-biking or xc-skiing. About 25 square-KM of outdoor fun.
Accessing the park can be challenging, since for most of its length the park adjoins residential neighborhoods. If you're from out of town, your best bet is to park at a public lot like the Menterschwaig or Brückenwirt Biergärten for example. Riding a bike down from central Munich is another option.
There's something here for everyone, especially in summer: cool river water, plentiful beaches (loose scree mostly but some sandy), tubing, fishing for rainbows in riffs and the deeper pools. Miles of double- and single-track in every direction. And since this is Bavaria, every few clicks there's a beer garden or playground.
Mid-summer weekends the banks turn into a kind of college party. Barbecues, booze, boom boxes and the occasional nudist. You might have to search a bit to find a quieter bend to pitch your blanket. read more
