Sure, I haven't been back…read moresince 2006 but I can tell you: this pub is where it's at for all kinds of English-speaking expats in Montpellier and French Anglophiles. This bar exists in practically every one of my greatest memories from my time in Montpellier... I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. I'll say good. The bar is big enough, lots of seating and usually gets pretty rowdy as the night continues. There's always a great crowd of regulars that hang out and the staff are amazing. They're all super friendly, English and French speaking and they love their customers. I never, ever had a bad time at O'Carolan's. If you ever find yourself in Montpellier, France (which you should since it's the most beautiful city in the entire country), go to O'Carolan's. The atmosphere is always welcoming and the crowds are always gregarious and fun. Oh, and they have a pretty kick-ass St. Paddy's day celebration, which spills out onto the street outside the bar. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

So as we were walking by la gare, and passed several touristy spots, we ran into a host brother of one of our group. He was from Texas (and if you haven't guessed by now we were all college students). He led us down some of what we thought to be fairly sketchy alleyways and side streets. Until we found "The Egg". Now "The Egg" is a great place to go, even if you speak a very small amount of French. For the owner is Irish, and his bartenders all know how to speak English. This gem, was great. It was away from the touristy, and loud French, and we found a comfortable spot in the corner (although it was fairly crowded it was not overly so) and we sat down and enjoyed a few beers. Although the ladies couldn't find many fruity things to drink, I enjoyed my Chimay beer, served in a Chimay glass and served cold. The Irish owner was really nice and spoke perfect English. The only thing that knocked this down a star was the lack of selection. All in all a good bar to avoid the crowds and the annoying French (while attracting the amusant). Prices: (medium to high range) 4.80 EU- For bottled beer. 3.00 EU- For 1/2 a pint 5.50 EU- For 1 pint.

Not a great place. First of all, it's heavily overpriced just like all of the other Irish/British…read morepubs in town. Second, the crowds get out of control if there is rugby on. Third, the staff were intentionally quite rude to my friends and I, who spoke French and politely ordered. The one employee at the crowded bar told us to wait while he flirted with some girls, and when we decided to leave instead, he yelled derogatory, sexist terms at my girlfriends and I who had done nothing wrong.

They have an excellent choice of beers, although the affordability is somewhat questionable. The food is rather outrageously expensive, but sitting on the terrace and sipping high-quality Belgian and Irish beers just next to the park has definitely some charm to it. Overall I would still recommend this place, even if I won't be adding to the list of my favorites anytime soon.

I made eye contact with a waiter who ignored me. 4-5 min later I made eye contact with another waiter who told the first guy we wanted service. He came over but didn't say a word - no greeting, no 'what can I get you', nothing. We ordered and drank 2 wines (very cheap - 4 euros for 2 glasses). No one came back by to check on us so I walked inside and the guy bar tender looked at me, turned away and made a joke with another guy at the bar. These guys are jerks. Don't go here.
