Another great course through St John Ambulance…read more This time it was Transportation Endorsement taught by Bernie. You may recognize him from the Level 1 video. Bernie was an excellent instructor, and the class was all hands on, no videos, with lots of practices before the final timed exercise. I recommend the Transportation Endorsement course even if you don't need it for your job. They have taken a lot out of Level 1 and put it in TE. This course teaches more advanced life saving techniques, and you learn new skills, such as how to insert an oral airway, and how to use an oxygen tank. I was also very impressed with their pricing for their first aid supplies. Years ago I bought a sheet style pocket mask from them for $12. They are now only $1.50. $1.50! For a very important piece of personal protective equipment. Everyone should carry one of these. They also have small kits that include a the mask, gloves, bandaids and gauze for only $3. Very useful. Apparently they have a new supplier. I hope the change in prices have led to more people carrying first aid equipment. you can buy the full Level 1/2/3 kits, too. Make sure you have one in your car. You never know when you could need it. Park in the underground lot, which you access at the far end of the ground level parking. Pick any numbered, un-reserved spot. It's free!

Attending Hilltop was like attending university instead of a quick college course. There is no way I would have been able to learn on my own what I learned with the excellent instructors in class. During my time there instructors offered to give extra help and there was absolutely no charge for that. There were some old alumni and some current students there were offering tutoring at a price.. but that sort od thing is done everywhere! And I paid for my tuition myself, with a payment plan. Nobody pressured me into taking any kind of student loan, and I know for a fact that at least 50% of the students in my graduating class also paid for their own education. I found the education to be totally worth the price and I think that a lot of people would actually agree with me as many of my friends that graduated with me are successful trainers or group fitness instructors. So clearly my experience is the complete opposite of the girl above... I had a great time there and felt that I learned a lot. And I know that a lot of the students in my class, the previous classes and the students that started after me all feel the same way because we all stay in touch! Awesome School! It's the only way to go if you want real knowledge of the training industry. After the Personal Training Diploma Program ... if you are looking for more eduction... go for a kinesiology degree!

I gained so much knowledge from one of the most knowledgeable and gifted teachers, Donna, I have ever encountered - very passionate and with years of experience in the fitness industry. The instructors addressed any questions that I had. The course is technology-forward so we were encouraged to do practice quizzes using different methods not only limited to handouts but also different apps, websites, games and hands-on. As a visual-kinesthetic learner I need different learning tools beside books to make things more clear. It was amazing how instructors understood my learning style and supported me whenever I needed extra help. Best part was not only did I surrounded myself with like-mind people but I also gained great knowledge in the classroom, the gym and outside - in gorgeous Westminster Pier Park when the weather was nice. We learned invaluable information about the industry from guest speakers who also happened to be hiring manager and potential employers for many of us in the class. Moreover we enjoyed many field trips relevant to the material covered like to Flaman Fitness and Save-on-Foods for nutrition talk with Registered Dietician. This is a review for the Japanese General Level 1 language course…read more Currently halfway through the course (week 4) but so far, the course has been amazing! Class size maxes out at 10 people so classes are intimate and you get to know your fellow classmates. Apparently the course still runs if minimum 2 people are registered in the course! Price remains the same but it's considered semi-private lessons and are 1.5 hours long. If 3 or more people register, it goes back to being 2 hours long. Yoshiko, our instructor, is fabulous, always making sure we understand before moving on to the next part of the lesson. Classes are a blend of conversational and writing, 60/40 mix. For the Japanese General courses, they cover two chapters of GENKI I textbook (textbook has 12 chapters, good for the first 6 levels of Japanese at IH!). By the end of level 1, we are suppose to know hiragana, katakana and also be introduced to kanji! It's no cakewalk, do expect to put in some effort but it's totally worth it! I've taken many language courses in high school, undergrad and continuing ed (e.g. french, mandarin, latin) but this course is my favorite hands down! Because the course is during November/December session, it is only 7 weeks long instead of the regular 8 weeks (due to Christmas break). Regardless, 2 chapters are still going to be covered! Price is reasonable, $195+tax and textbook if you don't have your own copy (+ $75). In regards to the admin staff, I have had no problems with them. Course registration was painless, and they were able to provide me with an official invoice/receipt for work purposes. Overall I am extremely happy with the quality of language instruction and small intimate class sizes. It's also located at a convenient location downtown, close to Stadium-Chinatown skytrain station. That being said, I'm definitely continuing on to Level 2 in the new year =D

The entire operation was pretty smooth from registration through to the end of the course. Registration online is easy. However, I would recommend that they differentiate International House Vancouver (ihvancouver.com) offering more than just language training -- homestays, volunteering, work experience, etc. from the modern languages area (languages-vancouver.com). Both are based out of the same office, but becomes confusing for those looking for just one or the other. A quick assessment test over the phone pretty much determines which level you would be appropriate for. The curricula are set up so that you can progress at your own pace since it is a rolling schedule. The classes themselves are small with (based on my observation) student-teacher ratios no more than 15:1. This is essential to getting enough attention from the teacher especially in the critical level 1 classes where you're learning the foundations of a language. Classes can be as small as 3 but I've never seen classes larger than 15. The instructors (which really make up the majority of your experience with the school) are great. I've only ever had one but the quality of instruction is on par with what you'd experience at a continuing ed course at a local college or university. The program also offers instructor feedback which indicates they take their quality of instruction seriously. I'm already signed up for level 2 but I encourage anyone looking to learn or improve their language skills to give IH a good hard look. They provide solid teaching & structured learning for good value vs. other institutions in the city.

I haven't driven for 2 years since passing my N with this company. I only took the special $40 for a hour assessment before I took my class 5 test because they hit all the points that was needed and the instructor confirmed that I was good to go. If you have any doubts, try their $40 assessment and see for yourself. At least you won't be paying the regular rate or even higher from other driving schools.

She was very prompt in reminding me of lessons, and would work with me to make sure I did everything correctly. Thankfully, I passed the test due to her instructions.
