I noticed the historical marker before I spotted this classic historic house and pulled in…read more Unfortunately, the museum was closed today but I did manage to examine the house from a few angles and it is pretty cool. I will need to come back when I can tour the museum properly. The marker reads, "Mundy House. Built between 1850 and 1870 by descendants of a Revolutionary War soldier and Methodist minister Jeremiah Mundy (1760-1835); One of the founding families of the Rock Springs Methodist Camp Meeting grounds in Denver; The R.O. Mundy family owned the property until the 1990s; Gravesites at the Denver Community Cemetery and Bethel United Methodist Church." The Mundy House is one of the few remaining historic houses in eastern Lincoln County, and it stands a local landmark that documents the history of the Mundy family and the development of Denver during the nineteenth century. The Mundy House is a central-hall house that maintains much of its original architectural integrity. It represents a house form that was ubiquitous in the county during the last half of the nineteenth and first decade of the twentieth century, but nearly all of these houses have fallen into disrepair by abandonment and neglect or have been substantially altered with artificial siding, replacement windows, and unsympathetic modern additions. Preservation of the Mundy House is necessary for educating people about local history, historic preservation, and architecture. [Review 15905 overall - 3121 in North Carolina - 1410 of 2021.]

It reads, "Mitchell College. Founded 1856 as college for women. Presbyterian until 1959. Granted state community college status, 1973. Two blocks north." Online, there is more information. "Mitchell College was officially authorized by the Concord Presbytery in 1852-1853 as a Presbyterian female academy in Statesville. However the first school building was destroyed by a storm while still incomplete and construction was halted for nearly three years due to a lack of funds. The college officially opened in 1856 as the Concord Female College." "In the late 1870s the school came into the hands of Eliza Mitchell Grant and Margaret Eliot Mitchell, the daughters of Elisha Mitchell, for whom Mount Mitchell is named. [Reference: https://www.yelp.com/biz/elisha-mitchell-historical-marker-mount-mitchell.] Under their leadership the school made considerable progress, expanding both the size of the campus and the curriculum. In honor of them, the school board of trustees named the college after them in 1917." "During the next two decades, major work was done remodeling the campus buildings and constructing new facilities. In 1932, men were first admitted and in 1959 the college became an independent community college recognized by the State of North Carolina. Today the school offers over 20 associate degree programs, as well as numerous certificate and diploma options for those pursuing post-secondary education." For example had a English paper due, had a friend proofread, had the writing center proofread, had another professor proofread it, and then had the literal library to proofread it. Lobby is spacious with abundant natural light from the windows, row after row of mail boxes on the interior walls, and a copier station left around the corner as you come in. If you weren't raised by wolves (or otherwise technology-averse) you might consider having a go at the self-serve kiosk thing to buy stamps, print labels, send packages, and all that sort of stuff; it's just like a video game except you actually accomplish something when you're done. The on-screen instructions can walk you through any of the available processes but if you need more or different help there's people for that too. The counter area is kinda spooky because it's got theft deterrent gates up for I don't know why (there's signage up about how armed robbery of a post office or post officer is a really bad idea so use discretion here.) If you require personal assistance please be prepared to conduct your business when you get to the counter; it makes the postal experience a little bit better for all of us! yea for having a clue! If you just want to complain, well there's probably a venue for that too but use your inside voice and try to be polite.
