I am currently in my final semester of studying Kinesiology, and this school has been nothing but great. Campus- All together (no walking through a city)) with lots of grass and trees sprinkled throughout for a cohesive feel. Many different buildings with all sorts of architecture- some are original buildings, some are big limestone Washington DC lookin, big concrete block lookin, or all futuristic looking with huge glass fronts. Plenty of sidewalks to get you where you need to be. Maintenance of the grass and snow is pretty good. The use of sand instead of salt can be a nuisance when you come home and dump a sandbox out of your shoe. Class- I honestly enjoyed about 90% of my classes, especially because my classmates and I enjoyed what we were studying. Most professors are great and actually care about your education, always an outlier though. Don't buy or sell your books at the bookstore. Sports- Cyclones are (usually) decent in the big 12 conference, and its been a big part of my experience going to tailgates, football, waiting in the freezing cold for basketball, being on ESPN, and seeing friends compete in volleyball and gymnastics. For smaller sports, they often give out prizes or food to bring in students. Extracurriculars- I have been involved in research, college ambassadors, tutoring, student ministry (Salt Co.), club frisbee, and many intramural sports (fantastic program to take advantage of if you're not already). These alone have had a huge impact on my overall experience and getting to meet so many people! Dorms- I lived in Larch and it was pretty typical, as most are. Great to live in the dorms freshmen year to get acquainted with campus and meet lots of people. However after that I'd move out if you're looking to save any $ Overall, Ames is a ehh city with a great university. Beautiful campus and warm hospitality! My daughter and I went for a college visit earlier this month. Sign up for a campus visit online. If you have a mobility disability or any other disability, let them know and they will accommodate your needs as best as they can. They were ready to wheel me around in a wheelchair for their campus tour. The admissions representatives were organized and very excited to host prospective students and their families. They had a complimentary dining center meal to give you a taste of their on-campus boarding experience. ISU has a wide variety of housing options to fit your budget. They also have a strong House system. If you decide not to join a fraternity or a sorority, you have an active community to participate in inter-mural games and sports, to have dinner with or just hang out. We got to enjoy a bit of that with the honor's Anders House. We played board games at night and enjoyed meals with students. They love snacks and treats from parents. Academically, ISU is a fabulous STEM school school. It has many professors and opportunities for students to engage in research. It also has a fantastic Mandarin Chinese program with excellent teachers. I am proud that my eldest daughter is a Cyclone and hope my 2nd daughter seriously considers it as well. read more

I attended the better of the State Colleges - The University of Iowa. Go Hawkeyes! Yet: - One Brother and my Sister graduated here. And they both received excellent educations. - My best friend from High School got both his bachelors and Vet degree here. I also bunked with him at Friley Hall, enjoyed a wee pint in Campus Town, and cheered on the Cyclones at the old Clyde Williams Field. - I once stayed overnight at the Memorial Union as a young High School Student thinking of attending Moo U. I also marched in the VEISHEA parade, have attended events at the Hilton Coliseum and Stephens Auditorium, and continue to enjoy the tranquility of Reiman Gardens. - My Parents live in Ames and I've spend many visits wandering this beautiful campus and sharing a kiss with Gayle under the Campanile. Living in Ames for 9 years, I kinda felt like I went to IOWA STATE even though I never set foot into the class room setting I did enjoy music events, sporting events, conferences, weddings, and all the other activities this campus setting hosts! Heck I even got to open for President Obama in front of 6,000 people on central campus! I kissed in the clock tower, skipped rocks on Lake Laverne, was a guest Dj on KURE campus radio, and even drank a beer in a dorm or two! Iowa State's triple overtime victory over rival Iowa tonight in the annual ISU-Iowa football game (amazing game, by the way!) made me realize that I've neglected to Yelp my hometown university. Although I didn't go to college here, mostly because all I wanted to do when I graduated from high school was get away from Iowa, 8 years of perspective has made me realize that Ames really was an incredibly wonderful place to grow up, mostly because of ISU. Both my parents teach here (my mother is a professor and my father recently started a second career teaching after practicing law for a long time). And although I never matriculated here, I did take classes here my last two years of high school and spent a lot of time on campus. Some of my ISU highlights: -Beautiful campus: Lake Laverne & the Campanile...sure the winter months are rough, but the summer and fall make it worth it (ish). -World class faculty (and I say that not just because my parents are two of them). You may have to seek it out a little more than you would at a small private university, but an outstanding education is available here at a wonderful price. Lots of departments and colleges are tops in their fields. -Big 12 athletics: Although I love the university I went to, a part of me regrets missing out on the whole state school athletics experience. Football games are so fun, and men's & women's basketball is even better (Hilton Magic!!). I had season tickets to ISU women's basketball back in high school. They were really good then and have been consistently good in the 10 years since. -VEISHEA!! -Ames is a really nice college town: all the advantages of a small town (safety, friendly people, no traffic etc), with some of the advantages of a big city. The diversity of ISU really brings a lot to the city of Ames, and although the dining scene can't compete with really big cities, there's certainly way more ethnicities represented in the restaurants here than elsewhere in Iowa. Growing up in Ames also gave me the chance to make friends from other countries whose parents were ISU students/postdocs (in my case, very good friends from both Poland and South Korea) and then go visit them after they had returned home..lucky me!! And of course the cost of living is very low too, which makes living here as a student much easier. I firmly believe that there is no better place to grow up than in a Midwestern college town and Ames is a truly great one. Iowa State University has been very good to my family. Although I have a lot of other schools to cheer for and support now, I will always consider myself a Cyclone first & foremost (even though people in California always see me wear my cardinal & gold say "Oh, the Iowa State.....Hawkeyes?" um, no.) read more

It feels silly to review Iowa State, but why not? It is my favorite place on earth. It is not possible to miss my time at Iowa State any more that I do. I met my best friends here and I made too many memories to ever list them all. The campus is absolutely breathtaking. A beautiful place to walk around and enjoy nature whether it is spring, summer, winter or fall. My husband and I were engaged under the Campanile on Homecoming, so nothing makes me happier than thinking of campus full of leaves and some good ol' Cyclone Football. The school spirit is incredible, especially when on display at Jack Trice, and VEISHEA in the spring is a fun experience for everyone. Definitely worth a stop if you are ever nearby. Tons of history and tons of beauty all in one spot! read more

I'm partial to this stadium because I like the Cyclones and have family members that have attended ISU over the years. I've also been to many, many games and have enjoyed every one of them. The stadium itself isn't the largest of college stadiums, but it is one of the more lively ones as the fans definitely get into the games. The seats aren't exactly comfy, so bring a cushion if you're so inclined. And be sure to dress warm on those colder days. The eats at the stadium are what you'd expect, so grab a large soda, a foot-long corn dog or some nachos, and have at it. As with all college stadiums theses days, they don't allow alcohol in the stadium, but ISU fans are known to pre-game quite thoroughly, something I've experienced first hand. So, I suggest showing up a little early for some tailgating action and then making your way to the stadium just before game time. Go Cyclones! read more

I visited this university for a few days and felt quite welcomed here. Its a pretty decent size university with around 33,000 students who are mostly from Iowa and some are from neighboring states. You can find modernized buildings to hundred and sixteen year old clock tower at this university. Some of the things that really impressed me were..... 1. Well maintained campus- It may not be the best looking but this is one of the most well maintained campus I have seen in mid-west. 2. Freedom- Many departments are not closed in the night. It means you can go to your lab or department building anytime you want. 3. Facilities- from hotel rooms to horse stable. it has a lot of facilities like museum, clock tower, bowling alley, game room, big library, bars, coffee house, well equipped health center, swimming pool. 4. People- from students to staff every one knows what the are doing. 5. Big Campus- its a big campus and still can be covered on foot or bike without much convenience and one of the reason is because it is not very sprawling. 6. Transportation- People from the university can ride the bus for free. This is something which I found quite awesome about this place. Its like they are promoting a green culture. Plus bus time table is as accurate as a clock, they were rarely late. 7. Welcoming - People are quite friendly and easy to talk to. You also get an access to free wifi for 10 days after you register your device online. Overall, I had fun while I was here. read more

I've had the privilege of hanging out at Iowa State University here in Ames, IA with a proud alumni and friend during a recent trip up here from Kansas City, MO. I can see that Iowa State has a rich and proud history in the state of Iowa. Being that I was a tourist and a college graduate, I could only think of how fortunate I was to go to college in the first go around and thought of going back for a graduate degree in the future. My ISU friend, her husband who attended Drake, and myself stepped onto the campus during finals week and there were plenty of people walking the campus. It was great to be able to see college activity again, especially being 10 years removed from it. It would be awesome to return to college, but I would definitely need $$ and time to pursue the degree. Iowa State University is located in Ames, IA, which is about an hour's drive from the capital of Des Moines. When I arrived here with my friends, we walked around campus, particularly the site where they had the plaque where it commemorated the invention of the first computer. Thought that was pretty neat. We passed through the science buildings, physics, and other buildings, along with the mega library that looks like a corporate office building. When ya got funding, you go big, I suppose! We walked around for an hour, marveling at the people and the campus. I was told of a superstition about entering the doors, how it was done a certain way or else one would fail all of their classes. Thought that was a silly superstition, but somehow everyone believed it! So, when I walked through the doors normally, my friend said that she caught a girl catching me entering and she got all wild about that. lol lucky for me, I'm not in school anymore. ISU has a rich tradition of academics and a very strong athletic program. They have a broad spectrum of degrees of study and you can choose whatever you want to do with your life and career. Sky's the limit. I would have liked to have studied English or History here. Maybe next time for sure. The architecture of the buildings are interesting. It was nice to rejoin the collegiate scene, even if it was for couple of hours. We ventured into the college bookstore, which was much more larger than my college alma mater. We went shopping a bit and was gifted with a couple of souvenirs with my trip to ISU. At that moment, I thought I was an honorary alumni of ISU. It was a nice gesture on my friend's part. Maybe it would be nice to attend graduate school here someday. But for now, we left the campus thereafter and headed towards Hickory Park for lunch and barbecue. Support local! A read more

I am currently a student here taking online classes. The wifi here is very bad. Like so bad it's faster to use my service. For all the money I'm paying to watch YouTube videos in my room I would hope they would have better connection. Last week, they even came in and said they were improving it. Went here for a degree in occupational safety and completed all of the courses but an internship requirement. My previous advisors had made mistakes with the internship causing it to never really occur. I ended up being told to write about my safety experience while working for ISU as a safety inspector. The problem was that the internship never officially took place, so nothing I wrote would be fully accepted by the department (they would have auditing issues should the college or university ask questions). To solve the problem my professor flunked me out (said my writing was not good enough to be a safety professional) and wanted me to reenroll for the course (with another full semester of tuition). I took the issue up with the department, then the college, then the university, but they all ended up standing by the professor's decision. Ended up becoming a published author a couple years later (writing was good enough to be published) and completing a degree in technical writing with another school (started technical writing at ISU, which is why they get two stars). read more

I left my heart..at the corner of Lynn Avenue and Lincoln Way.... I've lived in college towns for the majority of my life. Family members have staked their careers as professors or staff members at major universities in the Midwest, and western United States. I attended two of Iowa's major state universities. Out of all of my experiences from the foothills of the Rockies to the banks of the Iowa River my greatest sense of pride comes from being an Iowa State University graduate. Iowa State is a perfect combination of educational excellence, safety and convenience to aid young people in their transition from adolescence to adulthood. The campus is centrally located and allows students without cars to fully embrace the college experience with a bicycle. I never felt like a number as a student in the liberal arts at Iowa State. The advising, academics and beautiful campus always had a personal feel. Iowa State is a top-tier Carnegie, AAU research university but the undergraduate education is genuine, high-quality and worth the money. Great facilities, Big 12 Athletics and great cultural opportunities nestled in a small-town, safe and approachable setting. Iowa State may not be well known for the bowl games or revelry of its' Eastern Sister, this is a a fantastic University that wide-eyed students and concerned parents can both be confident in investing their time and money. The sight of the campanile and central campus in October amidst the fall colors continues to move me deeply to this day. I attended this University for 1 year, and while the party scene was popping I didn't have the greatest experience as far as the education. But that is not the reason I take the time to write this review today. I 100% believe my phone number was sold to marketing companies by the university. It may be hard to believe but I grew up in a household that was driven mad by telemarketing calls, so when receiving my personal cell phone number I was very careful to not include the number anywhere on any applications that didn't clearly state they wouldn't sell the number. I have been berated with marketing calls every since I left the ISU system 7 years ago. I have also received calls to contribute to a alumni fund... which seems pretty ridiculous as I flunked out of both semesters I spent at ISU. Mainly the biggest irritant is the fact that universities are money pits, and they can never seem to get enough. Shouldn't education be about something different? I figure the calling will never stop, and the university system will never change, but maybe putting something out there will show people they aren't alone in being used as a pawn for financial gain. And maybe with that we can ask for better treatment. And to please stop selling our information! read more
