I used Invitae via Bon Secours for genetic cancer screening and it seemed fine. But when I went to get FH testing, I realized this is probably a scam. Think Elizabeth Holmes. They outsource FH testing to a company called "Genome Medical". My Monday consult with the genetic counselor was fine. She disclosed she was driving and I asked if she wanted to reschedule but she said she was fine. She seemed knowledgeable and I told her I was leaving the country Friday, but she assured me all as well. After the call, she told me she'd have the test kit sent via overnight shipping. Come Wednesday, nothing. I tried to call Genome Medical (the subcontractor, as far as I can tell) and I was redirected into a voicemail after a lengthy hold. I called Invitae and was told there was no order and to call Genome. Buck passing at its best. Can't wait for my bill. Genome finally called me back and I asked them to cancel the shipping of the test kit as I was not getting service or anything I was promised and that my GC was clearly too busy driving to remember the overnight commitment. They said they'd cancel. Next thing I know, there's an order. Which I missed because I wasn't in the country, like I said. No one can tell me if temps are a factor in accuracy. This is a joke. And if you're going to outsource your service, it's your job to handle your vendor. You don't get to tell me to sit on hold forever only to get routed to a voicemail. Unacceptable. And I have no recourse because Invitae just tells you goodbye. read more

I had a very frustrating experience with Invitae's genetic counseling support while trying to follow up on my whole genome testing results. I reached out with specific, informed questions about my report--particularly regarding documented limitations (including areas where additional or targeted testing may still be clinically relevant). I also asked about next steps given ongoing and evolving neurologic symptoms. Instead of receiving clear guidance, I was repeatedly told to "wait" until a future specialist appointment several months away. At the same time, I was also told I could submit medical records to support updated symptoms--but no clear explanation was provided for how that process works or whether it would allow for earlier review. That inconsistency made it very difficult to understand what my actual options were. The interaction itself was also concerning. When I attempted to ask follow-up questions or clarify discrepancies between what I was being told and what was documented in my report, I was told the counselor would not "go back and forth" on the issue. The tone came across as dismissive, and it did not feel like there was room for meaningful discussion. Additionally, some statements made during the call about the scope of testing (including claims about what had been ruled out) did not appear to align with the written report I received, which further added to the confusion. Genetic testing is complex, and I understand that not every question has a simple answer. However, patients should be able to ask reasonable follow-up questions about their own results and receive clear, consistent, and respectful communication in return. I would strongly recommend that Invitae improve: * Clarity around what whole genome testing does and does not rule out * Guidance on when additional testing may be appropriate * Communication standards for patient interactions This experience made an already complex process significantly more difficult than it needed to be. Patients navigating complex conditions should not have to push this hard just to understand the limitations of their own test results. read more

I had genetic testing done in 2023 and paid out of pocket since my primary insurance was a high deductible plan. I later found out in 2024 I was eligible for a secondary insurance that back dated to 2023. July 2024 I informed Invitae and requested they resubmit the claim to my secondary insurance which would likely cover the balance, so they could reimburse me. They stated they would resubmit right away. Despite calling monthly to check on the status they assured me it was still "pending". Come to find out in March 2025, they never filed the claim. At this time I am past my window of being able to file individually and I can not get reimbursed this money. Had I known they would lie and never submit the claim, I could have submitted on my own and received refund by now. Had tests done in Apr - Was quoted ZERO cost, that these were completely covered. Today I get a bill for the testing. 10 months later. If you ever have any testing to do through these liars, which I do not recommend, get proof of their false claims so you can defend yourself later. They keep trying to charge me $250 and won't run my insurance saying they don't have diagnostic codes from informed dna. I call informed dna and they say they have given them the codes. What is with this company? I just received my first invoice yesterday. Prior to that, they called me twice saying that I had a payment due. When I told the billing person on the phone that I had not received a bill yet, she said that it would be going out in 10 days. So you're calling me now to collect on an invoice I haven't even seen yet????? Craziness. Now I'm getting texts telling me I owe them money. This is ridiculous. This company is crooked! I had my genetics testing for gender, trisomy 13, 18 and 21 (NIPT) done 6/28/2022. I was told to pay $99 if I did not want my insurance billed because they usually do not cover it or most of it. I paid that on 7/19. Then I get another bill 7/28 saying I owe $15 after they billed my insurance for $1040 dollars. For tests CFTR GENE COM VARIANTS AND SMN1 GENE DOS/DELETION ALYS. After adjustments, they were paid $690.40 from insurance which left me with $15 which I paid 8/2. I was told there were no more bills after speaking with a Chris on 7/28. Now here it is 10/29 and I have a bill saying I owe $129.60 from 6/28 the same test but for: GENETIC TSTG SEVERE INH COND. They billed my insurance $4040 of that $1,024.05 was paid after $3000.95 in network adjustments. Which they are saying I owe $129.60. Not to mention 2 of the 3 CPT and Descriptions on my insurance website are NOT the same as what Invitae has on these notices they sent me. I have filed a complaint with BBB and now I'm filing one with the FTC because this is ridiculous! The ONLY saving grace is my results were back in under the 2 weeks as promised. But will all this business with the billing, I hope my results are accurate! read more

Billing practices are shady as hell. My provider (and a text from Invitae) assured me the cost of my testing would likely be $100 or less with insurance. Invitae text also implied I would be contacted by them if it was going to be more than that. They never contacted me -- and I received a bill a couple of months later for over $900! Original Review 3/17/22 I received a message from Invitae indicating that my insurance will not pay for my genetic testing. The patient pay price for my testing was to be $250 and they would not start the testing until I paid. I immediately paid the $250. It took 20 days to get results. I later received a notice from my insurance company that Invitae submitted a claim for $2735. When I called the billing department, I was told that I had not paid the $250. I insisted that I did and they finally saw my payment. I was told that when they get their money from my insurance company, I "should get a refund". I have a feeling I am going to have to follow up to make sure. This is a complete scam. Why would my insurance company be billed so much when I was given the "patient pay" price of $250? read more

The hospital I go to for all my checkups outsources some of their genetic screening to Invitae. The genetic results were clear and delivered quickly, however, Invitae unfortunately scammed me for my money. I received an email from Invitae in February quoting my out-of-pocket expenses to be $175 for having this genetic panel done. The email explicitly said "No immediate action is needed on your part for us to proceed with processing your test and billing insurance." In July, I received a bill from Invitae for $427.21, which they stated were my out-of-pocket expenses after insurance reviewed my claim. They also stated that they have sent me multiple invoices (which they absolutely did not) and that the balance was due in 3 days. I reached out to the genetic counselor at the hospital to see what was going on and she informed me that Invitae will settle the out-of-pocket expenses for much cheaper if you pay by cash. But that cheaper price can only occur BEFORE they send your claim to insurance, otherwise things get messy (which I unfortunately learned). I called Invitae to settle the cash payment and they charged me $250 instead of $175, stating that I missed my window to make a cheaper cash payment. So their method is to send a quote to patients and intentionally tell the patient there is nothing for them to do. This then allows Invitae to send the claim to insurance, receive a much larger out-of-pocket estimate, and then they settle the bill with the patient for a larger cash payment. It's very unfortunate that this company scams patients this way. I hope my story can help protect future patients. Make sure to call Invitae the moment they quote you for the genetic test even though they say not to do anything in the email. You will save a lot of money and stress that way. read more

On March 13, 2023 I was swabbed for genetic testing because I have breast cancer. The genetics test would determine whether or not I'm going to have to have both boobs removed. That was FORTY EIGHT days ago. Still no results. Today is April 30, 2023. They never let my breast specialist doctor know they didn't have results. I'm holding nothing against the doctor and her staff. I am certainly not the only patient. Once they came in they would be entered onto a spreadsheet, allowing them to know the best way to go. I called to ask if I should be worried that my cousin died the day before of pancreatic cancer. My dad did as well, my dads twin did too. Genetically my cousin and I are more half siblings since our dads were twins. That's when they knew the results weren't back. The whole time I'm thinking no news is good news, I was wrong. On April 21, 2023 I received a call from the regional manager of Invitae. She told me how unusual it is that the results aren't ready, but don't worry because so far the results they do have indicate that I will only need a single mastectomy. She is not a doctor. She was a pharmaceutical rep before becoming a manager, she is not a doctor. I asked her what happens if the results aren't back by my scheduled surgery date of May 24, a full month after this phone call. She had the AUDACITY to tell me I should reschedule. Apparently over seventy days is not efficient time for testing. Something this company does every day. No updates this past week. Nada. Zilch. I am extremely anxious. I can't eat. Can't sleep. Having cancer sucks, having cancer and not having a reliable company to test my genes? Horrible. Why would a regional manager call me, I'm a nobody. Why not one of the hundreds of lower level employees? What are they hiding? I read some of the other reviews of the pregnant women, gasped each time. Everything you read here regarding BAD reviews is accurate. You will not get your results as promised. I have waited 3 weeks and then told that my "results have failed". Dr. Eric Brown's office in Troy MI had ordered the test. When I received a call from the office, there was no concern for me that the test failed. I was recently diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and was told the BRCAI and BRCA2 test are very important genetic tests which can affect my treatment and surgery decisions. After feeling that my world was coming to an end after the amonio I find out my baby girl is in perfect condition. Provided genetic testing as recommended by my doctor. Very slow test results. Customer service people were polite but not ultimately helpful. Genetic counselor was nice but not particularly helpful as results from 2nd panel were still not back. Additionally, I needed to test for one specific disorder. I was told I had to test for all of them. I paid for everything out of pocket because going through insurance would somehow make the test more than than twice as expensive. Once results were released (later than the date I was originally told), I was unable to view report until 2 days later. I was told it would be a HIPAA violation to release my own genetic report results to me before 2 days. That makes no sense. Very unhappy. Wish I had found another provider. read more

I've used invitae in previous years and always got my results for carrier screening NIpT back in a timely fashion. Used in 2020 and 2021... no issues. Recently went for blood draw on 12/29- they received and supposedly started processing it on 12/31... it's now 1/7 and no movement, no updates. I'm very disappointed as this testing would've put my mind at rest as I'm a pregnant woman of advanced maternal age. I fear a positive result for trisomy... but will make do either way. My prior test results were back inside of 3 days. I looked up other more recent reviews of the company and now I'm beginning to regret using this particular one. Patients are waiting MULTIPLE weeks- for their results and my anxiety just can't handle that. Now it's the weekend and I don't expect any movement on my test results until the work week starts again and I'm very upset over this. read more

I am pregnant and had the NIPT test done TWICE. Both times it failed in lab processing and it took them an absurd amount of time to tell my provider it failed. The first time I waited 15 business days. The second time it took 8 business days. Customer service isn't helpful. Don't waste your time, mental state, or money with this test. After receiving multiple emails and messages stating that my estimated bill would be $100, I received a bill for $700 (after insurance). You have no way of knowing what you'll be paying until you get a massive surprise bill. Their client services and billing departments are utterly useless. Invitae basically dupes customers into billing via insurance which is exponentially more than what you would have to cover via self-pay (one rep basically admitted that it's cheaper to self-pay). They deserve no rating. Have tried to call numerous of times with no answers or call backs. Waited two hours just to be forced to leave a message and never hear from them. My labs have been "processing"' for almost two weeks now and they can't say why. It was done by a lab technician so the reasoning "sometimes it takes longer to get more of a sample" is bogus. When I asked how much longer they said it could take 5-7 days to process the sample. So I clarified that I could have another 7 days and they went back on that saying "we cannot guarantee a timeline or result date" I've done this testing before and gotten results within 48 hours and now I'm pissed my doctor didn't even give me a choice or providers. Our first sample wasn't handled correctly so the test was pending for over a week, I called to see what was going on, they gave me zero information nor told me there was an issue, within 30 min my doctor called me to tell me the lab called them and they needed another sample, so I had I not called lord knows how long it would've taken them to do that on their own. Now we've been waiting a week on the second sample with no news, we're at the exact same point in the testing stage where it didn't progress last time. Had blood drawn for NIPS on 10/14/22, it arrived at Invitae on 10/15/22 and lab processing supposedly began that same day. Today is 10/28/22, 10pm EST, and it's still on lab processing. Multiple calls to customer service and I'm told they're experiencing delays and can't give me a timeline. The billing also seems very suspicious. The genetic counselor from my provider's office said you'd have an opportunity for self pay if insurance doesn't cover it completely but then a rep at Invitae said once they bill insurance there's no option to rescind the insurance claim and do the $99 self pay instead. It really sounds like a scam. I wish I read reviews before agreeing to the referral to Invitae. read more

Beware of using this company for genetic testing. I will never recommend this company to anyone. Zero transparency on billing and customer service. I took the test and opted to forgo insurance and pay the flat fee of $250. The company claimed they sent me emails and left VM to confirm billing. My surprise months later that they ran the fee through insurance and ended up costing me more. I called, got it resolved and told them my husband needed to take the test also and that I wanted to pay the $100 up front fee. Was told we would be billed that. Now again months later, they ran it through insurance and another skyrocketing bill. Called customer service twice already and said they would elevate to a manager. Then was told that this was not reversible. Still battling with them this company to pay the agreed upon $100 fee. There is zero follow-up. Its not like I don't want to pay for the service.
