After looking at several houses for sales, I asked my realtor to drop me off at the ice rink which is my daughter's most favorite activity. We passed by the Peninsula Academy. I told my wife this is a great place for our daughter to enrich her English. Kay Lee, the deputy director of the academy was there, she was extremely helpful and listened to me on our needs. She recommended Kathy Kerstein as my daughter's English teacher. We moved our family on July 28, 2017. It's a Friday. My daughter Yiyi started Kathy's one to one class for the whole summer and once-twice a week during the school year. Apparently, she did extremely good at her ENGLISH LEARNER'S class. She moved on with Kathy's help, she got into Stanford's summer school, UCSB Research Mentoring Program. From a Chinese speaking little girl, hardly can speak a full paragraph to a young adult commanding her English In three and half years. My daughter, applied for colleges this year, she got admitted for UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UCSD. For private institutions, she got Harvey Mudd (finalist for President's Scholarship, she declined), Columbia University and Caltech. She accepted the offer from Caltech and will be the 2025 class of Caltech. This is a very well run, warm and caring school. My 3 year old went there for a month of their summer camp and came back speaking much more Chinese (she was speaking just a little before) since the environment made her a lot more comfortable with the language. The school's facilities and rules are well thought out and designed, with a regular schedule for instruction, activities, snacks, napping and free play. There's a lot of hands on activities and crafts, which my little one loved and enjoyed showing me when she got home. I really liked how well thought out the lessons are and how many demonstrations and experiments the little ones are encouraged to do. The parent community is also warm and supportive! He now loves to tell me what he did at school right after I pick him up. He knows all the students and all the teachers there, and he loves to go there every day. Even though it's a new school but it's really a new site for Nihao. It has all the systems and rules. The director there is an experienced elementary school teacher who is very considerate and thoughtful for situations such as my child's eating habit and bathroom usage. They have hands on activities, outdoor activities for lessons, celebrate different festivals as well as nap schedule, which is essential for the little ones. Myself, is also an elementary bilingual teacher, and I love that they differentiate the lessons for the kids to meet their developmental needs. Besides, they teach Mandarin and English, which helps my son speaks Mandarin at home since our home language is English. There's a lot more to say about this school, and if you are looking for a systematic bilingual preschool, this is the one.

We found Torrance Chinese School and decided the Traditional Chinese track was the one for us. My boys have been studying at TCS for a few years. They are now in T3 and T5. I find that the teachers are very patient with my kids and they have learned so much. They have taken part in competitions in speech, poster, and calligraphy. The top 3 students in their level go on to compete with other Southern California Chinese Schools in Arcadia. These are great experiences for them. It is also good for us as a family to be a part of this community. As we started taking a more active role in helping TCS, we have made a lot of great friends. We hope our kids can keep up their Chinese education and graduate from TCS.
