The staff is very friendly and available if you have questions about their games. They have a bar section where they served draft beer and cocktails and they also have a family friendly side. So glad I did because my friend and I came here and spent 1+ hours here as all the other touristy things were closed for the evening. We wished they have something like this where we lived and also that we had more people with us so we can play more games. $5/person and you can play for as long as you like. This place is pretty cool, I wish it was near where we live. You walk in, play nearly any board game for as long as you want (until midnight or 1AM!), and can even get food and milkshakes. It's clean, the games are well maintained, the owner is really friendly, and they have employees who can't wait to help teach you how to play any game you've never tried. What a hoot. 4 hours goes by before you know it...but then you realize you've been interacting with real people, face to face, learned new games, challenged your brain, and maybe even found a new favorite game. I've been to the Board Game Cafe a few times now and honestly, I think it's a must-visit when in Victoria. I know that it's not exactly unique to the city but the food is extremely good (plus, the ice cream selection is HUGE), the staff are extremely knowledgeable and personable, and the experience is downright fun. In previous visits, we've played relatively common games such as Trouble, Life, and Cards Against Humanity, but this time we decided to switch it up (but still keep it simple) and play a game called Poison. In this game, you go around and the "judge" (not certain if this is the correct terminology) chooses a card, then everyone picks an equally awful card and the judge picks which one will be the other choice. Then, people decide on the card they'd rather do, or, as the game states, they "pick their poison". It's essentially a glorified game of Would You Rather but I thought that the selections of cards are hilarious and it makes for some really great and funny discussion. While we were there, we almost all got food, with me getting the Wild Salmon Panini and a Chai Tea Latte. The sandwich came with potato chips and was quite good and decently filling but I sort of wish that you had an option of different sides because I'm not the biggest potato chip guy. As well, the top of the Latte was a bit too caked with chai for my liking but the rest of it was great (and the size is awesome as well). A couple of my friends shared a Mint Chocolate Milkshake and another got a bowl of Coconut Ice Cream and all of them enjoyed their choices quite a lot. However, I should warn that their Coconut Ice Cream is lactose-free and thus has a bit more of a chalky texture than regular ice cream but it's still quite delicious (in my opinion). A friend took three of us to this place during a day trip to Victoria and every one of us had a blast. For a $5 all-you-can-play fee, there is almost every type of board game imaginable available for guests to play. If you find something you really like, they also sell the games at the front. Being a café, they serve sandwiches, drinks and snacks, and they even make their own ice cream (with dairy free options!) After ordering a bowl of popcorn to share and an artisan root beer from Phillips Brewing, my bill came to $11 for a whole evening of entertainment. Coming here today was a bit of a letdown. My boyfriend and I were in town from Seattle and the Clipper leaves at one time - 6pm. So we had an entire afternoon to kill after visiting for a fun 3 day conference. We wanted to see some sights and with some time leftover and feeling dead on our feet after walking more than 7 miles, we found this games store. As avid board game players and fans of similar style shops in the US, we darted across the street to come see if they had anything we needed to buy. Approaching the entrance I noticed that more than just a games store, it's actually a café where you can buy food, drinks, and even sit and test games. They have an incredible selection of new games and an equally impressive opened games library for people to test and play in-store. So what's the bummer? The customer service is atrocious. There were three employees milling about and talking to each other. At no point did anyone acknowledge us, and worse yet, the employees were ranting about annoying customers and habits people have that bother them. Right in front of us! Not 5 ft away. Complaining about people changing their reservations for tables, complaining about when people show up with fewer or more people than they'd booked a reservation for, etc. And I know that it's frustrating to serve people who might be totally out of the loop when it comes to the service industry, but the biggest mistake here wasn't the consumers, it was the business. Who talks shit about customers in front of other customers? It was so off-putting that my boyfriend and I decided not to buy anything here. After browsing for about 10 minutes I took a seat with the intention of testing a game. Because I didn't want to be rude and play a game without buying anything to eat/drink, I approached the counter to ask about buying a coffee and a snack. In a rude tone the employee asked "Well are you staying here to play or just shopping? Because if you want to play games it's $5 a person." And it wasn't that she was angry, she was just speaking to me as if I should have known about this policy. But how? There are no signs posted, we weren't welcomed when we came in, we weren't greeted or waved to and no one approached us to let us know. "Hi, welcome! Please shop all you'd like. And if you want to test or play games, check out our library. We just ask that people pay $5 each to play." But nope.... We find out 10 mins later, after buying coffee. So no thanks. We'll take our money and our business elsewhere. So sad that when we thought we saw a cool place to hang out, rest our feet, play and maybe buy games, we felt unwelcome and unappreciated. read more

The actual selection for table customers is in the back corner plus a couple more low shelves. Half the game we picked were either missing cards or pieces. Not even their own staff know what games they have available for that day. Also don't expect any of them to help you when you're stuck familiarizing with a new game, they refuse to help with any game that's not toddler-friendly and the way they respond to your help request makes you feel as if you're being ridiculous. The food is overpriced for what it is, the entirety of their staff is behind the counter chatting instead of attending players at the tables. If this town had any real competition, the same way they're running this place would make them go out of business, fast. read more

There is normally a $5 cover per person. Once you have a table you can order food and drinks on your tab and unlimited play from their vast selection of board games. The staff will be able to run you through games which are new to you which helps save some time. Board Game Café... You'd think this kind of thing would be a lot more common than it is. Having lived here less than two years, I just recently found out that one opened up in my hometown. Such an event has been long overdue. For the modest price of $5.00, you get HOURS (and I do mean hours, there's no limit on how long you can stay)- of entertainment, and the Café stays open till midnight. The Café boasts an extensive menu of sandwiches ranging from $6.00-$8.00, as well as traditional party snacks such as popcorn, chips and candy. There's also a separate menu of designer milkshakes, which will intrigue even the most health-conscious gamer. (They can replace the regular ice cream with a vegan coconut ice cream.) As for the games themselves...needless to say, Cards Against Humanity is always in pretty high demand. So the boxes you'll find are fairly well-worn, with the possibility of missing cards. The same could be said for many of the other games. However, there are so many games to choose from that this is hardly an issue. You'll find games you love, games you haven't played in ages, and games you didn't know existed. We wer visiting from Vancouver and our friend brought us to this cafe, it's kind of cool how you can pay 5$ per person and stay there all day. I wish one of these was in Vancouver. Although if we weren't with a friend we probably wouldn't had known the rules of 5$ each and you pay when you leave, all we got was a bowl of candy (which I think was creative) and a couple of milk shakes to go. The game selection is almost intimidating, but you can ask the staff about rules, I mean they don't know all the rules of all the games, but it's nice you can ask. I would have to agree about the customer service complaints though, they do seem a little lack lustre when coming to assist you, but thief milkshakes are great! I spend a lot of time at this place, and can heartily recommend it! The food is simple, but excellent, and their selection of playable games is great and ever expanding. A number of the staff have taken the time to get to know the names of the people in my group, and the regular staff members who are there are courteous and attentive. The atmosphere is always cheerful and energetic, and if you are a milkshake fan you will have more options than you know what to do with. If I had to make one criticism, it would be that the food menu is small, and static. In the year that I have been going, it hasn't changed at all. As good as the options are, there is a limit to how often I want to have a turkey or salmon sandwich.
