As a social worker I spend a lot of time going in and out of Detroit public schools. I see some…read morethings that really make the hair stand up on the back of my neck. And then, occassionally, I see a few gems. This school is one of those gems. UPA and University Prep High School both use project-based learning so that kids can really focus on the things that interest them. All students do regular internships which are supervised by a local field instructor and a teacher (they get school credit for the internship). This gives them a chance to refine their interests and get exposed to the work world. But, a few things to note. UPA is a bit overrated in terms of it's academic rigor. Although it is a world above most of the DPS schools I visit, not all graduates are going to be prepared to start at a mid-range or top tier university. I've seen kids advanced from grade to grade (particularly in math) who really don't have the basics down well enough. And, another important thing to remember about UPA is that their teaching approach does not work for all students. Some kids need a lot more structure and will flounder when given so much academic freedom and responsibility for their own education. Parents of UPA students need to stay in close contact with the teachers and review their student's work on a very regular basis. Overall, this is a great school. The campus is well laid out, the rooms are clean and things are in repair. There's not a lot of violence. The teachers and staff are very good at communicating with parents and they take a personal interest in their students.

They require the kids to do an expedition project every month which is a good thing for kids to do in my opinion helps them to discover something new. This place is nested with racism. I experienced it first hand here from both the individual…read moreanswering the phone at the "academy"; more like cult...and the teacher herself in question. (Ms. Wolf) The "teacher", also known as Ms. Wolf is not only rude, but highly disrespectful and an incompetent educator. She breaks state regulations and does not cater to those who have an IEP due to a vision impairment. My daughter left the school crying, asking if something was wrong with her as this teacher blatantly yelled at her mother. Even more, our daughter was told that she was not allowed to attend school on the given day. This was due to the teacher (Ms. Wolf) becoming outraged. Another teacher had to step in in order to calm her down. This is both unprofessional and ignorant. Avoid this place like the plague unless you want subpar education for your child and for them to enter a cult.

Having mass every day is an amazing experience and keeps my faith in God strong. I absolutely love how the school was founded around St. Pope John Paul II's "Feminine Genius" idea. this school is SO BAD. when I shadowed here, the school told me about how since there is 4 - 90…read moreminute classes, you would get 1 on 1 time with your teacher to understand the topic and little to no homework. this is just not true. my history teacher at SCA gives us a homework packet or an outline every day that requires a textbook, but its not just that, Its the fact that we have a research paper due, she gave us a unit test(2 days in advanced), an outline about a textbook module, AND another quiz(map quiz) all due throughout a 3-day weekend. weekends are supposed to let you rest and go to church, and spend time with family, its not ment for staying home(and canceling plans) to stay home for 5 heavy- duty homework and studying. And keep in mine, that is just for ONE class. We have 3 other classes which also assign the same amount of work. so WHEN YOU SHADOW, DOOO NOTTTT believe the lie they tell you about how you will " you have time to do your homework' and they barely have any, because that is the biggest lie ever. They also will say that they give you breaks in between classes, thats bs. never once had i received a break in the 90 minute classes. If you want mental health problems: you should sit in one of these stupid 90 min classes. and the girls, they are THEE most rudest, self-centered, lying, gossiping, two-faced, BOPS you will EVER meet in your life. The school accepts everyone who applies so even if you have all bad grades and bad behavior they will still take you bc they don't actually care about the kids, this is why everyone at the school is bad. They talk about " Sisterhood". Im sorry, that the last thing it ever was. All the girls already know each other from middle school and already all hate each other and ALLLLL have drama. Like what were they thinking when they decided to put 63 girls in a grade?? like did yall think we were all js gonna get along and harmonize. NOPE!!! while my time here at sca, It has come to my attention that a full grown adult male teacher had a sexual affair with a student. This is NOT okay! especially in a "private" catholic school that is supposed to be "good", you would think they would want the best teachers avalible, NO! this just shows you they hire anyone aswell as take anyone. They genuinely do not care about what happens to you. Its all about the money. Ever since i graduated and went to collage i have no attention spam. The 90 min classes broke me. if you were to ask me to sit down for just 5 min and not fidget around, i couldn't. I have adhd now. also, if there is any grammar issues just remember about how bad the school system at saint catherines is. if there was a zero- stars option, i would put that instead of 1.
