I am a grandparent a child that goes to intensive education academy. I meet many parents at the family nights which iea hosts at least once a month. And almost all of us indicate that iea has actually saved are disabled children. I e a is one of the few if not the only schools in which a child can get and Orton Gillingham reading education and also a life skills class. It is absolutely amazing to see the things that the life skills class and Mrs berube do for the children. They bring them on community trips, they run a coffee shack three times a week, they bake for events, and the kids there learn that community is most important. I would recommend looking at iea for anyone who needs both intensive reading education and life skills. But those are not the only things they offer they offer education children. There is music education, art education, physical education and health along with clubs that support children's interests. Intensive education academy is truly amazing. . read more

My son has been attending IEA since last winter and I've been truly impressed by the school and it's faculty. They care, and it's obvious. Going from special education in a public school to IEA has been night and day. They are meeting my son's needs, academically, socially, emotionally, etc. I urge any parents considering outplacement their child to tour IEA, meet some of the faculty members, etc. It's changed his trajectory not only in school, but in life, and I am thankful every day that he is attending there. read more

I went here when I was very young and Mrs Jill O'Donnell was the most amazing and wonderful teacher in the world. She taught me how to read which I had a very hard time with.i see online many bad reviews which is not good because teachers like Jill O'Donnell and Judy Pratt and Jenna hinkston and Dianne nearly and sister Helen are awesome and they deserve to be treated with love and respect. This place started with good intentions but now it's just shameful. Ever since the new directors took over, this place just pockets money. The teachers are incompetent and the violations are piling up. Sexual harassment, lack of proper professionals (Occupational therapist, nurse, PE teacher, music, assistants). While there are some good people here, the majority are donkeys who have no business working with your kids. If you continue to let your child come here, you are either ignorant or a bad parent who doesn't care about your child's wellbeing. Now you know, so which is it? read more

Just started consulting and leading social improv groups once a week at the Intensive Education Academy this year. I am extremely impressed with the quality of care and expertise. The school leaders demonstrate ongoing efforts to improve the school and embrace pro-social practices that are key ingredients of a loving environment where kids feel safe to learn and grow and teachers feel valued and heard. read more

My son was a student at IEA for 5 years, the first 4 years were amazing, the love and support the teachers and staff had for the kids w as incredible, however the school took on new leadership this past year and it was a disaster. i had to find new placement for my child. I would not reccomend this school to anyone looking for an outplacememt. The new leadership and the board distroyed this amazing school. read more

This school used to be amazing, and I loved having my child attend. They hired a new executive director in 2022, and the school has gone drastically downhill. I would caution parents considering sending their children there, especially during the summer and fall 2023. It is my understanding that there is a large percentage of the dedicated staff who are leaving due to how they have been treated by the director and the board, and the atmosphere that made my child so happy and safe no longer exists. read more

This past school year (22-23) things went downhill. Administration changed and no longer made students and staff the priority. Communication was terrible. My classroom had teacher after teacher come in and out. Staff are unhappy and leaving, which will impact the students negatively. read more

A wonderful school in West Hartford for special needs children. All of the classes (for the most part) have a 2 to 1 student to teacher ratio. They do so much more than just teach here. Physical therapy and speech services are just a couple of the other services they provide. They also have work programs with a life coach for the older students to help,them transition. Countless extracurricular activities for the students as well to include dances, field trips, and other events such as pasta night and St. Patrick's day celebration. IEC is truly an amazing place and the folks who work there are incredible. read more

at iea there is now a negative and often hostile work environment for staff - over 50 staff members resigned due to the new leadership that took over in the summer 2022. it is no longer "the school built on love" and the administration is not student-centered like the mission states and previous directors embodied. i would caution any family who is thinking of sending their child here, and i would even more caution staff applying to work here. read more
