I can't thank Chromolume enough for all they've done for me, my production, and my brand-new…read moretheatre company. After being, to put it politely, screwed over by another theatre that will go unnamed just before rehearsals for our first-ever show were due to start, I was desperate to find a rehearsal space that could accommodate my large cast and my tiny budget. James and all the staff at Chromolume were beyond amazing. They were quick to respond to my query. They offered me an extremely favorable rate for my rehearsals after I explained my plight. The space itself is nice: the upstairs rehearsal room (Studio A) is lovely, the downstairs room (Studio B) has fewer amenities making it less optimal. Studio A has a dance floor and bathroom attached. I believe Studio B will be undergoing some renovations soon. Both spaces can get toasty in the summer months, but there is ample A/C inside. There is plenty of street parking--my cast of 14 never had trouble finding convenient parking in the neighborhood. Besides, the kindness and generosity of Chromolume's managers more than make up for any shortfall in the space itself. We had five weeks of hiccup-free rentals there for an affordable rate. The staff at Chromolume are true theatre-lovers, and they went above and beyond both to make us feel comfortable rehearsing in their space and even connecting us with other resources for the production (i.e. set rentals). I wish I had rented the theatre as well for our performance. I look forward to coming back to Chromolume for our future shows and rehearsals, and I am sincerely grateful for all they did to make this one possible. I would recommend Chromolume in the highest degree to any theatre company looking for rehearsal rentals.

Sept 2014 Oh dear…read more I'm torn on this one, because I really like to support theaters, especially tiny ones... Truth must prevail: *There is no a/c in this theater. I'm always chilly and I was way too warm. Under the lights, the actors were dripping sweat to a disturbing degree. *The room is tiny; I estimate that it seats about 40-50 people. This means no bad seats, but it also means that you'll want to buy your ticket ahead of time. *No parking lot. Street parking is available, but it's limited. Having said that...the room was manageable for about 90 minutes, starting at 6 p.m. Warning: if you have heat-related health concerns - do not go. The good news: the theater and restrooms were very clean. Vending machine drinks/snacks are available in the Lobby, which is a comfortable area for waiting. Pro tip: I never saw a "Chromolume" sign; the outside says "Attic." PS: I went to see the play "Supernatural," which was excellent.

Even on days where I'm tired or just not feeling great, the second I get to the studio where I'm welcomed with positive energy and thoughtfulness, I immediately feel better and know I am right where I belong. AGAS is a safe space for learning and growing as an actor, a place where you can challenge yourself and play, but also a community where you can make friends and feel a sense of camaraderie with your fellow actors. The opportunities this studio provides are beyond any other offerings of other studios. For example the additional emphasis of learning the business of acting and how to behave and what to actually expect on set is something that was almost never talked about at other studios I've been to, but it is what has helped me to start to exceed in my career. Also the seamless use of technology to further your learning. Being able to watch the class recordings afterwards has helped me to hone my craft. Additionally, being able to join online when I'm traveling has allowed me to visit my family and not miss a beat in class. I could keep going but if you've read this far, then you just need to come see it for yourself!

The positive vibes engulfed the room while the speakers, poets and musician's poured their hearts out under the watchful eye of the coordinators to make sure every keeps to the allotted time. The event went super smooth and props to the coordinators for hosting. I will def return Lavern!

It's hard to rate this place like any other music school or business in the area. Its function (not…read moreits "mission") is to teach arts and music to the community at a very reasonable rate (the community is rather underprivileged and this place is a real gem). So what is it that they offer? It seems like everything under the sun. They have a choir, a folklorico group (I think), and some other public/non-enrolled groups. Quality teachers instruct in instrumental education at a reduced rate for kids, including but not limited to strings, woodwinds (though I see less of them and haven't seen any brass players, but you probably should call to find out), piano and percussion. They are also respected for their voice instruction, as Alison Iraheta from American Idol some seasons ago was instructed here. However, it's not just instrumentation and music that they teach, they also have a drama class and several other seasonal rotating classes. Additionally, one of the most spectacular things about this school is their summer camp program (camp MusArt). The program has some great staff and instructors, and they usually have two months (1 section per month) and a production for each section (a fully staged musical) by the kids. Howe we, last summer they were only able to manage one section because LAUSD has screwed up their schedules with their budget issues forcing kids to go back to school at different times. The last show was the Wizard of Oz, prior to that they've done Mary Poppins, the Lion King, Mulan, West Side Story, etc. every year it's a treat for the kids to participate. Nothing can replace the quality they provide on such a reasonable level. Arts need more support, check out what you can do to help at http://www.lamusart.org

After a long time away, I have finally been able to find it in me to come forward. Krater is a good…read morestudio. I believe that Jen is a good teacher. However, I had to leave classes quite some time ago due to two traumatic incidences that I experienced within the Instinct Class. Firstly, I am an African American man. I was placed into a scene in which I was heavily interrogated by a Police Officer. I had an involuntary freeze in my Nervous System and could barely get through the scene. Upon the talk back, and being vulnerable about what I was experiencing, Jen dismissed this, telling me how I shouldn't feel this way because it's Acting Class and it's not real. Though I see her point, the Nervous System scientifically cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality. Regardless, the fear and freeze that I felt were real, regardless of the source. It was wrong of her to make me believe that I was in the wrong for feeling this way. The second incident, I was paired up with a much older Actress. The exercise was going well at first, but near the end of the scene, this older Actress pulled me into her and inappropriately touched me and aggressively kissed me. Her reasoning for doing this in the talk back was, "I felt his energy and knew it would be okay." This was a misread. I never gave consent for that. No one should ever have to be subject to that kind of interaction anywhere at anytime. This is why Intimacy Coordinating is important. Due to these two incidences happening in a period of a few weeks, I lost all trust and sense of safety within the Studio. Because of these losses, I felt that my growth would be stunted, so I made the decision to part ways. I do not wish ill will, but this had to be said. Objectively, I can understand and appreciate the good this studio has done for many Actors, a good few of which are friends of mine. And admittedly, I myself gained some valuable lessons in the months leading up to these events. However, this is my truth, and after quite some time of healing and mending my Nervous System, it needs to be spoken. Jen is a wonderful teacher, but far from perfect and I hope that these things never happen again to anyone else.
