I wanted my 200 Review to standout or serve as a benchmark as I can't even believe that I'm still…read morewriting. So, here's to the local magazine: Umoja. Their motto and mission: To bring positive news to your doorstep on African Americans. Umoja Magazine is a monthly journal of African American people & social justice news published in Madison Wisconsin and I recently went by to deliver Christmas greetings and to check in to see who's going to the Inauguration. Here's what works: 1) The owner does everything. She's wise and elderly. I say that to say, sometimes we forget the wealth of our people and of our culture is in and with the elderly. 2) Advice aside, she's running a business that spotlights what is traditionally overlooked about local folks doing great things in the Madison, WI community or have moved away and still contributing to society. 3) As a person that has ran a business, buys ad space for various charitable events and organizations - I'm always happy with the discount/consideration/and space size provided to me and other agencies when they're looking to meet their budget demands. What can be improved: 1) Online billing. 2) Sometimes the sage advice comes with harshness (once you have a rapport) that can be expected of the certain generations. Think that old guy screaming from his front porch to "get off his grass." Or even in the movies. You never talk to them until you have to and then you learn this person is the most geniune and insightful person you know. Well, I take the good with the bad and appreciate - I came for the free advice so yeah...go ahead and renew my subscription. What makes me a fan: 1) Deals when I need them for advertisements 2) The cover art. It's all locally done and in the medium of paint to canvas then it's converted as the Umoja cover monthly. 3) The articles that involve social action and social events that may have been overlooked or given a different spin by larger media outlets. Hope you find Umoja and use it well.
