This was the best bookstore I have ever visited. It's not just a bookstore; it is also a gift shop with those unique and highly engaging toys for children. All of the prices were competitive. The layout of the store made it easy to find what we were looking for and the employees were incredibly knowledgeable and caring about the books and the many additional products they have to sell. This is not Barnes and Nobles but considering the location it is a great bookstore. We always make at least one trip in here on our vacations to the Lake. We are all avid readers and no one ever has a problem finding a book to purchase as they have a great selection. My little ones also somehow always end up with a stuffed animal (they are very reasonably priced here). The staff is also very knowledgeable and friendly. In all our years coming (too many to count) I have never had a hovering staff member over the train table. But then again, I am not a mom who would just go off and leave my kids where I couldn't see them. If you are in need of a book, I highly recommend this store! read more

So glad I stopped in here! As a local book-lover with very few bookstores (or places to even purchase books) around the area, this place is a real gem. Not large in size, but also not the smallest book store I've been in, everything was very organized and sections/genres in the store were well labeled. Very decent selection of books. They also had lots of notebooks, bookmarks, kids toys, stuffed animals, board games, local maps, and locally crafted gifts too. I will be returning in the near future, as it is so close by and was such a great find for myself and buying other people gifts during the holidays. Prices on most everything were average for what I would expect from a new merchandise book store, had some books of certain genres on sale for 20% off from what I could see. The only thing that is holding me from a 5-star review was the customer service. It was not bad per-say, but there was none of it at all. No "hello" when I walked in. No "can I help you find anything?", "have you been to our store before?", or any other remark, just stood behind the counter area. No "how are you today?", "did you find everything ok?". When I went up to the counter to pay...just "hi"...told me the price..."have a good one". Not very friendly or helpful, but not rude either. read more

Excellent bookstore and probably the best for miles. The staff is nice and courteous and has always been helpful to try to find books I am looking for (even though a couple of times they couldn't get what I wanted due to things being out of print). I find the toy selection very good for the kids here, but some stuff is a little pricey. Nonetheless it's tough to beat this store in this area. read more

This bookstore has so much to offer. It is a great place to go if you are looking for a particular book or a gift for someone. The book selection is very nice and well organized and if a book it is not available in the store, it can be ordered. Another great feature is their selection of stuffed animals. This particular day, I was looking for an owl stuffy for my soon to be 4 year old granddaughter. There were a few choices and one was just right in size and feel--so soft and cuddly just as a stuffy should be. I decided to see if there was a book suitable for a 4 year old with an owl theme to give along with the stuffy. There were a couple of books that the sales person showed me and then believe it or not she went to the sale table and came back with the perfect book at a perfect sale price. That to me is customer service! I probably would have purchased 1 of the other books if she hadn't shown me the sale one and she could have made a bigger sale. There are other toys, games and items of interest nicely displayed throughout the store and it is just an all around enjoyable place to visit. read more

This bookstore is worth checking out if you are in the area. Decent children's books and toys. But wow has it gone downhill on the adult side. You can tell it is no longer owned and staffed by people who love to read as it used to be. So sad. I miss the prior owners and their knowledge. Hope they can up their game. read more

My family and I vacation to the lakes region every summer and I've been coming to this bookstore for as long as I can remember. It's like a miniature Barnes and noble native to New Hampshire. Along with checking out what's new in fiction, I love going through the many history books that have decades old photos of Winnipesaukee and even Meredith. I moved to the Lakes Region in 1974 and with the advent of turning the mill buildings into places of commerce I couldn't be more happy. As a parent myself, I always took my young son to Innisfree Bookshop because he loved to look at books geared for him, the stuffed animals, the train set, and so much more. I was always right with him during the times we visited, the staff knew me very well, and I never felt as if I had "nazis" hovering over me EVER. The comments made above by a few people, particularly the person who planned on spending $200 (yeah, right) just show me that SHE was the issue. People who instruct their children well in life, will have well behaved children. It IS as simple as that. Additionally, I have known Bev and Kathy and so many more who are employed there and I would be honored to work with any of them. The Innisfree Bookshop is a professional environment, that any store owner would wish to emulate. In fact, when I opened my own store front in Jaffrey, NH in 2007, I modeled my "in store posture and presence regarding children" after Innisfree Bookshop. I never had a problem! People today need to realize that there are folks from all age demographics including elderly folks trying to purchase items as well. I wonder if the person who vehemently states her case above, and later calling the manager was the same woman who I saw allow her kids to run rampant in the store, nearly colliding with an older person who was oxygen dependent and carried a shoulder bag with same in it? I recall asking that elderly person if she was alright, but further wish I had spoken to that "head in La La land parent" and told them to leash the kid. As a former CNA and Nursing student, and paraprofessional working in the medical industry, I have seen this type of parenting (the lack thereof) and wonder how would the parent handle their child contacting an elderly person causing that dear one to fall and break a hip? Additionally, as a former Vet Tech, I have seen people manage their leashed canines in a more controlled, better behaved fashion. To my way of thinking, people have lost great respect in our times. As a parent, I have always instructed my son PRIOR TO ENTERING ANY ESTABLISHMENT. It doesn't matter what the enterprise "is", I have seen kids running the aisles in Walmart, Shaws, Hannaford and the like, and it is still the same kind of parent of the child whom all the rest of us would like to strangle because they failed to do the very things by virtue of their child's education relative to "courtesy and comportment" in various settings. Children need to be raised to RESPECT their environment, an to respect the personal space of those around them. It is a great shop with a bunch of great things. They could use better customer service. They all seem snobby. They have no clue what true customer service is. You want to keep people coming back not scare them away! When you put out toys for children to play with....expect them to play with them. The children I observed playing with the toys .....their parents were right there. The employees watched them like a hawk. I might come back if all the employees have smiles on their face. read more

Rude staff. The bookstore itself appears to be very nice. I spent the morning wandering around the lakes region and had a coffee in hand from a local shop. When I entered the book store I noticed some signage that mentioned that cell phone use was not permitted. Fine, I agree--people are obnoxious on their phones. I saw nothing about food and drink not being allowed. Within ten seconds of being inside an employee came up to me. Offered no form of hello or greeting and asked if I could put my coffee on the front counter. I told her no and said that I would rather just leave, to which she said "thank you" in a condescending tone. Establishments reserve the right to prohibit food and drink. However, they should put up a sign or be a bit more pleasant to customers. I'm very careful in stores and like to support local businesses but I certainly won't be back to this one. read more

I agree with the reviewer who wrote about hating to take her kids there. I have had the same experience! As soon as the rude older women behind the counter see kids walk through the door, they go into full on Nazi mode. The last time I went in there, my son, who is 5 and excited to see the train set, started running. Now, keep in mind that I, his mother, was RIGHT THERE. Before I even had a chance to address his behavior, the manager, Bev, spoke out to the entire store, "Stop running! Kids today have a listening problem!" I was mortified and angry that my child would be talked to in that manner. She did not even give me a few seconds to address his "running" myself. I was so angry that I grabbed my kids and left (it was right before Christmas and I was planning on finishing my shopping...spending at least $200 there!) I called the owner the next day, explained to him what had happened and that his manager's rude behavior, sarcastic remark, and humiliating treatment had cost him a paying customer. I shouldn't have bothered...his attitude was one of indifference ("hmmm...I don't understand how that could happen! Bev is normally so sweet!") No wonder the employees are allowed to treat customers like that, he just doesn't want to be bothered. I posted my experience on my Facebook page, and SEVERAL other people who live in the area wrote to describe similar experiences. It always shocks me that in this economy a paying customer would be treated like that. Will be buying all my books online from now on. read more

Will never return! As I'm reading these other reviews, I take it the rude women I got was the manager or Bev.. I'm like a few of you in terms of bringing business to my local independent business owners but this store "Doesn't Deserve It". The fact I'm reading that the owner had zero empathy for the lady who walked out with her children, after being embarrassed, and her child being yelled at, shows me that this is either a family member, or a friend running his store. No serious minded business owner today would let what she's done on countless occasions go by wayside without addressing it. He'd also go out of his way to show he understood the complaint and was doing everything in his power to address it. How sad! Like this lady finishing her Christmas shopping, by 2 sales were near the $200.00 mark. Next time I'll bring it over to the Center Harbor bookstore like I should have in the first place. My bad for thinking to try another place when I was already getting superb customer service in Center Harbor. So after you read all of these reviews I guess it's a 50/50 chance what kind of service you're going to get. Let me ask; Is it worth it??? read more

Innisfree Bookshop is a wonderful resource for those who live in or near or who visit Meredith in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. It offers a nice selection of books, cards, gifts, games, children's toys and educational material. Merchandise is top quality. Bev and her staff are very knowledgeable and invariably helpful to their customers, never too busy to make a recommendation or special order an item. I have been shopping here with my son since he was 2 years old. The staff is friendly & helpful, even going so far as to give my son pre-publication books to read & review (we return them & buy the book if he enjoyed it & wants to reread it). They always have good suggestions that suit his taste (voracious) in books. I really enjoy finding lesser known books here, unlike big box bookstores that seems to only have "bestsellers". They are also very willing to order books that we want that aren't in stock, and they usually arrive within a week. It is a 90 minute drive for us to get to Innisfree, but we try to get up there at least once every 6 weeks or so. read more
