As an adult with real-life responsibilities, finding time to exercise can be difficult, but when you LOVE what you do, you actually look forward to it. Taekwondo at Fastkix is a dynamic exercise class that builds your strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and we even learn self-defense that's actually useful for real life. I had been looking for the right adult martial arts class for a while. I did taekwondo as a kid and remember loving it. When I got fed up with my boring gym/running routine, I knew I had to find something different. Not many martial arts schools have a real adult program, but Fastkix does - with wonderful instructors and a great group of adults (ranging from early 20s to early 50s). Most importantly, Fastkix is a place that is really supportive and encourages you to try something you didn't think you could do! I highly recommend Fastkix Taekwondo and Kickboxing class, especially for women. Life can be super crazy with work and family, but its just as important to find time for yourself and do something fun and healthy!

Mr. Balon and Mr. Charles Ferrone have created a true family environment. We aren't students who workout with each other, we are a family that cheers for each other and helps each other. No matter what your age or ability, the Instructors at Fastkix will help you to reach your true potential, and accomplish things that you never thought you could. When I joined Fastkix, after a 10 year layoff from Taekowndo, I was just looking for a place to "workout". Fastkix has given me more opportunities than I ever thought possible. I compete in both the local and national tournaments in the 43 and older division. I am a natoinally certified AAU official and coach. I will be testing for my AAU Nationally Certified Senior Instructor Rank and in January of 2014, I will be testing for my nationally 5th degree Black Belt. Why?...That's simple! Once you are a member of the Fastkix family, you just want to get involved and do more. It's so easy on many levels. Mr. Balon always looks to bring in new aspects of the martial arts, from grappling, to weapons, to self defense and more. Classes are never the same. You will walk out feeling great after one of his workouts. Outside of the school we always look forward to the annual picnic, bowling trip, and halloween party. My whole family is involved at the school. I work out with my son, who is also an instructor, and my wife and daughter never miss a Kickboxing class! I am truly proud and honored to be a student and instructor at Fastkix Taekwondo and Kickboxing. There is so much to do at Fastkix . Come and give us a try! You won't regret it!

Tiger Schulmann's Martial Arts - East Brunswick

It took me a little while to fully appreciate what's going here at the East Brunswick Tiger…read moreSchulmann's. I send my 5-year old son here and he has really gotten into it. As a parent who cares deeply about my son's maturity and his need to learn discipline, respect, honor, self-control, and self-protection, I was wary about putting him into a program like this. I mean, I'm his father. *I* should be teaching him these things. But Tiger Schulmann's -- in particular, *this* Tiger Schulmann's -- has proven to me that they can provide all of these things in ways that differ from what I can provide my boy. This place is no-nonsense. The instructors are no-nonsense. And while the instructors here certainly have a lot of patience, especially for children this young, they do not necessarily go easy on them. From the moment you sign up, you as the parent are asked to enter a commitment: a commitment that your child will themselves make a commitment; a commitment to the program; to having "a non-quitting spirit." I will admit I was skeptical at first. I see these karate and MMA places popping up all over the place. But in the last few months I have seen my boy develop in ways I would have struggled to develop him myself. My son doesn't have the same emotional bonds to the instructors here as he has to me, nor do they have to him. This is a real business -- the business of taking boys like my son, and helping them learn to be a man. It's not about the actual physicality of what they teach -- though that is absolutely essential to what they learn. What my son is really benefiting from is the discipline that they teach. (And I should point out that there are a lot of girls in his class, too - Tiger Schulmann's is not just for boys!) We recently held my son's birthday party here, and it was an astounding success. The parents were so thrilled that their kids were at a birthday party that encourages physical exercise, listening, and following directions. Yet there were a handful of children who were woefully unprepared for the experience -- breaking down into tears, running around like maniacs, and just showing a complete incapacity to follow even the simplest of instructions. And there stood my son. Standing proudly with his instructor. Following every instruction. Demonstrating every move. Being the example I have always hoped he would be. And he's just 5. In all honesty, I truly appreciate what Sensei Katz and Joshu Haze are doing for my son. This is an important time in his life, and I feel very good about him being in their hands. I really feel is he is growing as a young man and that this is an investment that will continue to pay off in the critical years ahead.

Was really good at the start, but when my son decided he didnt want to go anymore because it "Wasnt…read morefun anymore", we tried to take him out of the program but got trapped in a contract and are paying $100 a month for something we dont use, and cant drop out.

Ziran Martial Arts - Training kids and adults to be their best!

    Ziran Martial Arts

Ziran martial arts is the best place you can find near the Edison area if you are interested in…read moretraditional Chinese kungfu, or probably martial arts in general. Ziran emphasizes equally on the two aspects of taichi----- (1) Taichi principals and Qigongs, (2) combat applications. Most of the teachers in traditional inner-style kungfu have the problem of being unrealistic and imaginary(I personally experienced several ones). But this is not true for Sifu Seth. His skills are clearly examined in real application, and are well-balanced between effectiveness and intellectual value. From my understanding, his attitude is critical in a health way. They also provide weapon training which I personally found very interesting. Stickly sword/staff/stick/saber of Taichi is not all. Again, techniques of main-stream taichi got examined here. What remains sound are kept in the teaching. Members of Ziran martial arts developed an casual and welcoming atmosphere. It is quite different with some karate clubs who emphasize excessively and unnecessarily on traditional etiquette. People here are bros, they usually jokes and laughs all the time. I trained only for two months with them as I have limited time around Edison. Knowing that I will be gone quite soon, they actually treated me with more attentions and made sure that I learned as much as I could before I left. I believe this unrestricted manner is consistent with the idea of Taoism which behind all the Taichi skills. Learning Taichi is both physically and intellectually beneficial. Anyone joins Ziran can easily feel what I am saying in two weeks.

I found Ziran Martial Arts after some googling, and decided to give the studio a try. After nearly a year of practicing there, I am ready to write my review. The long and short of it is, this has potentially been the best decision I have made in my adult life. I can only speak for the adult classes, but from what I have seen from recitals and seminars, the kids classes are equally good. For adults, there is Tai Chi, Kung Fu, sparring, joint manipulation and throws, sword forms and swordsmanship training, and meditation. Sifu Davis helps you work through which of these are most interesting to you--do you care about the meditative aspects, or the martial aspects, or something in the middle--and from there you attend whatever classes you want. One of the incredible things if you attend all the classes, there are many principles and applications that fit together. I have learned so much more about body mechanics and the principles behind what I had been doing in the past than I even knew existed. I thought the only thing that I cared about in martial arts were the direct applications of what I could use to defend myself if I were ever attacked. What I have discovered instead is there is an entire science of body principles that I have been using through muscle memory that I now have the opportunity to actually learn. I especially appreciate what is taught here, because the mechanics are designed to preserve your body and your ability to continue practicing well into your 50's, 60's, and 70's--one of the things that I never considered as a child because I didn't have to was whether or not the martial arts I was doing was putting a strain on my knees or other joints. I am very grateful that I am learning things that I can use to protect myself that are not going to hurt me in the long run now, before I have done damage to my body. There is also a fantastic community amongst the students. After attending classes for a year, I know nearly everyone by name. Everyone is incredibly friendly and supportive of one another. There is a large age range amongst the adults, which means there are people from all walks of life. We work together on forms during classes, and you can always ask another student or one of the assistant instructors to show you a part of the form. Sparring is always friendly, not competitive, and no one brings any sort of anger or attitude into class. When doing joint manipulations and throws, I have always trusted my partner to go slowly and give feedback about whether or not things are working, and respond to feedback. There are other graduate students and professors. I have been given advice about everything from schoolwork and life to how to better take care of kittens that I recently adopted. People offer to drive someone who biked over back home after class when it unexpectedly starts to rain. The studio sometimes does weekend seminars on special topics, and there are barbecues after the seminar. There's a yearly winter holiday party. There are a number of tournaments that people have the option to participate in, or to go to support participants. The community and the friends that I have gained through practicing at this studio is irreplaceable to me. All in all, I could not recommend this studio highly enough. I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to practice here. Anyone who is looking for the entire range of traditional Tai Chi principles and forms to direct and incredibly practical applications should come and give this studio a try.
