Recently took my 15 year old whom I suspected had dyslexia and after $1200 spent got a diagnosis of anxiety. Knew this was wrong because I'd already had my daughter tested with a family friend who specializes in Dyslexia but lives in VA who had confirmed my suspicions. She implored me to find another Indiana provider so I could get my daughter a much needed 504 at school and tutoring. My family friend also pointed out a couple of key things about DII's methods that were clear indicators to her that they are grossly outdated in their approach and testing. Some of these include that DII's psychologist's background was in behavioral sciences with no speciality in reading or learning disabilities, their tests were achievement tests only, they don't have a Speech Language Pathologist on staff, had no access or familiarity with the PAST test, RAN test, CTOP test etc. and had no idea of the certification level of any of their OG tutors. Do yourself a favor and spend your money with Dr. Horn at Beacon who can do a thorough and in depth psycho educational analysis. As it turns out, ever professional we've seen OTHER THAN DII has agreed that my daughter is very much dyslexic. When I reached to DII to explain my frustration with taking my $1200 and offering me a very unprofessional analysis and report afterwards, they promised to pay for additional testing for my daughter with an outside SLP and then refused to reimburse me after I had the testing done. These people didn't care at all whether they helped my child or not and proved they don't adhere to standard principled business practices either. I'd steer far away from this business if you suspect your child is dyslexic as DII is in the business of taking money with little regard for actually helping children.

We called and got a call back from 'Blake', who made the appointment for a sample lesson for our son who is 15. We paid $42 via paypal for the sample class that is listed as 90 minutes but we only got one hour. We met in a local bakery as he did not give us the location of the 'school' He went through some simple exercises and then after, told us that he would be a good fit to tutor our son. We discussed one hour, 1.5 hours or 2 one hour lessons a week, and I told him we would go home and discuss it. He was very polite and mentioned that he had been an instructor at IUPUI. Great! I thought. Sounds good. I went home and started looking for reviews and conducting due diligence and I kept coming up empty handed. Since Blake had never told us his last name, I had to do some digging to find him. Blake Ensign is his full name, and he is affiliated with some multi-level marketing/consulting entities. He has a twitter presence, but no reviews, anywhere, and nothing about teaching kids Japanese. He lists his education as 'attended a Big 10 school' studying journalism, and some dates. The Kanji Camp website states he can conduct test prep for language certification exams for Japanese. He does not list if he actually holds that credential. Also, we noted that the KC website is rife with typos and grammatical errors that seem intentional syntax errors to mimic English as a second language. All of the reviews are written in the same voice, and none of them are signed or independent. For clarity, Blake Ensign is a white man presumably from Carmel Indiana. He does not speak with a discernible accent in person and a study of journalism usually requires some writing or at least proofreading skills, not evident on this Kanji Classroom website. I sent an email asking for some verification and his response was, "I do not a have a lot of time to talk with prospects. If you want to enroll, accounting will send you the payment link. If you need some kind of references, they are on our historic website... www.kanjicamp.info. Any thing else can probably wait until your son is an official student in our program." Basically, no info unless you pay. In addition to referring to himself in the 1st person plural, he insists that he is following a distinct Japanese business protocol, but when I sought info from schools that are actually in Japan, they had no problem showing me their credentials, photos and independent reviews. Finally, I contacted IUPUI continuing education regarding Japanese Language instruction where he said he had been a teacher and they have no knowledge of him. Before hiring this individual, please conduct your background checking. This is an individual that I almost hired to teach minors. There is something amiss, and if you check the photos on the site (in his kitchen?) and the overuse of stock photos, the lack of credential discussion and the secretive nature of the 'Japanese Business Culture' you'll probably come to the same conclusion.

We've been visiting Mathnasium off and on for over a year now, and we just love it. Most…read moreimportantly, my child loves it! I have two children who have mathematical minds, and they really enjoy math and logic. However, my oldest has been struggling a bit learning certain math concepts at school, so we visited Mathnasium to get some help. I wanted to be sure that any help we got with math didn't extinguish that love he has for math -- I didn't want him to dread doing math. But Mathnasium makes learning mathematics fun. And the people who work here are super invested in the kids and work very hard to make sure they succeed while having a good time. Our first visit consisted of an evaluation, just to see what my child knew and didn't know for his age/grade. After the evaluation, they could then see what he needed to work on, and they were able to tailor the tutoring to fill those knowledge gaps. The tutoring is all about making sure the kids have the basics down, and then working up from there. I really like that. What my child really liked was that he was able to work up toward prizes. Each page of work he completed meant he got a punch in his punch card, and punch cards could be redeemed for prizes. And the prizes were really good! We're talking board games, water bottles, snacks, and other fun things. There were also lots of fun bonuses throughout the week -- each day you visited, there was usually something interesting happening. Like one day, they celebrated National Chocolate Day by giving out chocolate to everyone who visited that day. Or if it was a tutor's birthday, then everyone got double or triple punches in their punch cards. Speaking of tutors, they were all so very kind and helpful. The tutors seem like high school or college-aged kids, which was nice because I felt like my child could relate to them. You can visit Mathnasium on a month-to-month basis, which I like, because that means we can drop in when I start to feel like my kid needs a math refresher. And it was especially helpful this summer break -- we visited to work out some of the kinks he had with math last school year, and also to keep the skills he had already mastered sharp. I have recommended Mathnasium to real-life friends with kids, and now I'm recommending it to you! I'm sure we will be back at some point, and the best part is that my kid is actually looking forward to going back.

If you're a parent, you understand that at this point in Winter, everyone in the house is probably going stir crazy and you need a change of scenery! It is located in a strip mall in Carmel. There is plenty of parking in front of the building. We do live on the Southside so it was a 35-40 minute drive to get here. And when you have a toddler, that could make it or break it before you even get there! But we made it thankfully. It was $16.00 per child for 2 hours and the adults were free. I do think that is a high price and was one of the reasons why I gave them 4 stars. The other reason was the drive. For us Southsiders, it is a far drive especially when you have a screaming toddler in the backseat who does not want to be strapped down any longer. They do have a lot for kids! When you walk in, there is a baby/toddler area with smaller toys. Then there is a little drawing area and off to the sides there are plenty of little rooms for different children's needs. Whether they just need a time out, there's a room for that, whether they just want to play music, there's a room for that, whether they just need a dark, quiet room due to sensory overload, yep you guessed it, there's a room for that too. We spent most of our time in the back area with the swings and large trampoline. I would definitely recommend trying this place out! We had a great time and wish we had something like this for kids on the Southside.
