I attended the 17th annual Indonesia Day celebration on Union Square last month. Okay, sometimes it takes me a long time before I write a review. This is one of many one day (Saturday) ethnic festivals for a specific country, authorized by the city. In my opinion it's much better organized than the 18th annual Korean Day festival earlier this month. According to the event organizers this is the largest Indonesian event in the country. I was somewhat surprised by that statement since Union Square is not that big.
This free public event features Balinese dancers, singers and live music. Both traditional songs and contemporary jazz, performed by Gamelan groups, a typical musical ensemble from the islands of Bali or Java. At one point they invited some people in the audience to participate. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/indonesia-day-san-francisco?select=_KPtDOmTxZjk32Xk36qw8w#_KPtDOmTxZjk32Xk36qw8w
There're only 4 food tents: 2 local vendors (Borobudur Restaurant & Jayakarta from Berkeley) and 2 out of town vendors (Golden Mar from Fresno & Wenny's Restaurant). You'd think that the food options were limited, not so. The vendors didn't hold back, each tent had between 40-50 menu items (appetizers, entrees, sides, desserts & drinks) in stock, just WOW! They had runners constantly restocking items from a remote location. A lot of variety: for example, Golden Mar had a savory version of martabak, while Borobudur was selling a sweet version of martabak.
As expected, many in line didn't know what to order, so total strangers were asking what do u recommend? - Beef rendang and curries are the safe suggestions. It's not often that I find a menu where I hardly recognize any menu item. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/indonesia-day-san-francisco?select=KyajZ2d8uv52oBwWvLS89A#KyajZ2d8uv52oBwWvLS89A It's a great culinary adventure! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/indonesia-day-san-francisco?select=Ppeuc4QDfQLdtur0P8j1eQ#Ppeuc4QDfQLdtur0P8j1eQ
Every vendor had a lunch combo - either 2 or 3 items (choose from 8-10 entrees) with rice for $8-$9. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/indonesia-day-san-francisco?select=EGK827QhQ0TdBIdC9hmSmA#EGK827QhQ0TdBIdC9hmSmA Not a bad deal, so most people ordered the combo. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/indonesia-day-san-francisco?select=Phb6HiZ_fOWt-RcvLltUcQ#Phb6HiZ_fOWt-RcvLltUcQ The lines for food were long but moved relatively quickly. Many didn't notice that the tents also had lines on the sides. So while most waited on the main line in front, I got in one of those shorter lines and only waited about 10 minutes to get food. A happy camper!
I was also impressed at how patient, friendly and helpful were the staff. They put up with all my "what's this? and what's that?" questions with a smile. I loaded up on goodies. It was a great event. The theme this year was "Lawang" = gateway, to look into Indonesian culture and customs. All the people I met were welcoming and eager to share their culture, so they certainly made a good impression with me. read more
