I dropped by here during their Black Friday sale period since one of the books that I was interested in showed up as being 30% off on their website. However, on their website, it mentions that prices may vary in the store which is "fine". Since I was downtown, I decided to drop by this store as opposed to my usual Indigo store that I visit (in Pointe-Claire). I looked for the book that I wanted to buy (The updated Wealthy Barber) and because it was on special on the website for 30% off, I wasn't sure if it would be located in the ground floor where they have tables with books on sale or in the personal finance shelves. I went to the personal finance shelve/section but couldn't find it. An employee noticed that I was having problems trying to find a book and asked me in French if I needed help. I answered in English and I know that French is the official language in Quebec but the employee spoke to me in French and based on his accent, I don't believe that he spoke English which I find strange since I would say that over 60% of the books are in English in Indigo and while Indigo does sell French books, the majority of their books appear to be English. I replied to him in French and told him which book I was looking for. He asked me what type of book it was and I told him that it was a personal finance book and I brought him to the aisle/shelf where I looked. He also couldn't find it so he asked another employee for help. I told her the name of the book I was looking for and she keyed it into her cellphone and said it was a personal finance or economics book. I showed her where I looked and mentioned that on their website, it shows that it is 30% off so I wasn't sure if it would be on the shelf or on one of the tables with the books on special. She called someone and I guess they told her that it was on the side of the shelf and that's where there were about 20 copies of the book. Some of the books had a sticker on it which said 20% off and some of the books didn't. She took one of the books without the sticker and handed it to me and then went to help another customer. I wasn't sure what the price would be given that my copy of the book didn't have a 20% off sticker and Indigo's website showed 30% off but also had a disclaimer that indicated "prices may vary in the store" so I asked the French speaking employee what the price for the book is. I've purchased books before so I know that books generally have their price printed as part of the cover. He took my book and looked and then pointed to the price. I then told him that the website shows 30% off, this book doesn't show any discount, and showed him some of the same book where there was a sticker on the book showing 20% off. He went to another employee working the aisles and I asked him if he could tell me what the price of this book is and he then turned the book over and said "the price is here". I then told him the same thing which is some copies of this book have a 20% off sticker on them, my copy of the book doesn't, and the Indigo website indicates that this book is 30% off online. He then told me that the price doesn't always match the website price and this is normal. I told him that I was aware of this and just wanted to know what the price of the book is since if it was regular price (or 20% off), I wouldn't buy it today and would buy it online. He told me to line up at the cash register and ask the people working there to scan it. I waited in line (there were about 15 people in front of me and 3 cash registers open). After about 3 minutes standing in line, I finally spoke with one of the employees manning the cash register. I asked her if she could tell me the price of the book and she did the same thing as the other employees which was to turn to the back cover and show me the price printed on the book's cover. I then told her that online, the price shows up as 30% off and on the shelf, there were some copies of this book with 20% off stickers on the book. She told me that the online price isn't always the same price as the in store price and I told her that I know this based on the disclaimer on the website and I just want to know what the price is since if it wasn't 30% off, I would just buy it online. She scanned the book and then told me that it was 30% off and I then told her that I would buy it. She told me the price (including tax) and I told her that I had a Plum card. She said okay and I showed it to her on my phone which she scanned. There should have been a way for me to find the correct price of the book without having to stand in line to "buy" the book and having each employee I asked about the price show me the price on the book's back cover like I've never bought a book in my life was somewhat insulting. If the book wasn't 30% off in store, it would have meant lining up in the line to buy the book for nothing since I would have just left the book there and bought it online. read more

The bookstore is huge and has an impressive selection of books across all kinds of genres. There's also a big section of staff picks, which I really enjoyed browsing--it made it easier to discover interesting titles I might not have found on my own. It's easy to lose track of time wandering through the shelves; I could easily spend the whole day there. This is quite the bookstore! Love how expansive it is, that they have a coffee shop, and even a live piano player while you browse books. I liked how they seperated their top hits on the first floor, they had a great curated selection of books. I also really loved the children's section. It was a huge and beautifully done. Good bookstore above the Underground City in Montreal. The selection was great but it was a bit tricky to find stuff. Staff was friendly but line was beginning to get long but we got lucky. The prices are decent as this is the Barnes and Noble of Canada and I think our Borders gift cards from a decade ago went to their ebooks called Kobo. There are two stories and much of the stuff is upstairs but the checkout and entrance is downstairs. The escalator was only going upstairs so we had to carry our stuff down the steps as there were no directions for an elevator but Canada is quite behind the US on accessibility. read more

The line snaked through the store, both downstairs and upstairs. The cashier waved her hand to alert the next guest in line. I love that despite the fact that we are well entrenched in the era of screens, books remain relevant and thought to be good gifts. I'm writing this in a small nook on the 2nd floor, away from the bustle of being downtown. It is quiet (or as quiet a store can get). Here, I see gondolas of fiction, tables and pallets stacked with books. And customers considering their next read. Sales associates are throughout the store, making recommendations, quickly shelving new titles, and re-shelving orphaned books. This large store has books to appeal to most readers, children, teens, and adults, fiction and non-fiction readers. I can be found here at least once, if not multiple times, during a trip to Montreal. Both French and English books are available here. And as with most large bookstores, there is a coffeeshop within offering a respite in caffeine and carb form. read more

When we got there when we came in, there were books all over the shelves. It was easy to understand where each book genre was and I could find some books for my level easily. When I bought the book it was only 13 US dollars and I felt that was a good price for my book since it was a fancier version of the original. (It has sprayed edges and the letters gave reflection.) I don't usually grab a coffee or lunch at indigo cafe because it's always packed! I was pleased with their selection of desserts and lunch wraps/salads. I went to Indigo on Monday morning and I was looking for Elle Quebec since in the States they do not publish that edition. I was disappointed not to find Elle Quebec but they did have Elle Canada which was OK but I wanted to get something that no one else had and in another language. other than that I was browsing the French section and they had a book that I wanted but I decided not to get it because it was a book that I had read in English and I didn't like it and I wasn't going to spend $$$ on a book that I didn't like ! read more

First off, it's great that there are still real bookstores around and hopefully there always will be, because there's something about a real printed book. Ok, back to the review before I digress any longer. On the few occasions I have asked for help from a staff member, it has been a positive experience. The one time that stands out further is when I had to order a book that was not in stock. Despite being disappointed that it wasn't in stock, the process of ordering it and retrieving it were made more enjoyable by the good spirited counter people I dealt with. I received an email confirmation of the order and when the book was ready which was helpful to keep track of it, and to schedule when I would go get it. The book turned out to be a good read, which was like a cherry on the 'real' bookstore experience. read more

This store is above average as a bookstore, as the inventory of books is not enormous. That said, it's awesome to have an English bookstore smack dab downtown, and I LOVE the layout of this place, with books downstairs and up, and gift items on both floors, a cute café on the second floor, a central staircase right in the middle, a great kids' area upstairs (complete with toys and baby gifts), and a lovely home accessory/gift section upstairs as well. If I still lived in the city here, I'd hang out here regularly. Super place to grab a tea, read a book, people watch. Note that there are nice bathrooms on the second floor, too. Prices seemed high, but there were ongoing deals on books (i.e., purchase 2, get 1 free, or buy 1 and get 1 half off). read more

So I basically live in Indigo. I have been going to this bookstore for years. The little cafe on the second floor is a nice little treat for bookworms like me who need a little break from their shopping or to enjoy being surrounded by so many books. I love their chai lattes and hot chocolate. These drinks make it a cozy environment to read or get some work done. The brownies and cookies are delicious.The best part is sipping your drink while listening to people play on the piano nearby. Definitely a bonus. The only thing that makes me give this cafe 4 stars instead of 5 is how packed it can get. You have to go at certain times to ensure you will find a seat. Also it can feel a bit overwhelming during rush hours or christmas when there are a lot of customers walking around bumping into your table. Of the many, many things that have all but disappeared in America (unfortunately barbarians do not appear to be one of them), the one I think I miss the most is the welcoming, luxurious bookstore, complete with cafe and overpriced knicknacks, and where you can buy books you have every intention of reading, immediately after you have mastered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, visited every country in the world, run a successful charity, ended world hunger and started your own political party. No wonder those damn books are gathering dust on your shelf. But I digress. Indigo is what Barnes and Noble wanted to be but could never become even with plastic surgery. Not only brand new with that new book smell still exuding from its being, but also classy and chic, the Bloomingdales of its domain. Books in both English and Canadian fill the shelves, beckoning you to peruse, to explore, even to conquer and become all that your progenitors hoped you could be and more, while the cafe, with its intoxicating yet curiously legal concoctions, wafts its perfume throughout the store. Outside, a yoga class is taking place and office workers are lounging on the too-comfortable, stainless steel chaise lounges which create an air of public self-indulgence. I love to go in indigo and look at all their books. There are also many seats and tables where you can read books or even study. Plus they have a coffee place inside the store; wow. Since i moved to Montreal, I always go shopping at indigo to buy Christmas presents for my family there, such as books or even stuff like selfie sticks. The staff is helpful and most of all friendly. The architecture may be nice, have elevator music and all the fancy schmancy stuff but the customer service sucks and swallows. The employees are rude, they ignore the customers or simply turn around without answering a simple question. I was there yesterday and it was impossible to find someone to help me find a book I needed even the computer said there were two copies left. Thanks God for Amazon.com.....they got 80 $ from me, which means I saved 10 $. Indigo got 0$ and probably will not get anything for me in quite a while read more

The Barnes & Noble of Montreal!! I feel like good bookstores are hard to find nowadays with the internet and increasing amount of eReaders around. I have an eReader so in actuality there is no need for me to go to the bookstore. However, I find that I do like to be holding the hard copy of a novel in my hands and Indigo was the place to go! Indigo had a wide range of book selections and obviously French books as well. The Indigo staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I overheard one of the staff talking to another customer recommending various books and I liked that she was very knowledgeable about her book factoids. From the cafe you could enjoy a dessert and cup of coffee while reading a book or watching the busy street below. Overall, Indigo is a great place to go to browse through some books and to sit and enjoy a nice relaxing day. read more

It's just OK, probably because those of us who buy books in English have almost no other choice, it's Indigo or the other bookstore around the corner: Paragraph...or Amazon.com. I check regularly for books online and they are listed on their website, but when I check the stock at the closest store, on St Catherine St in my case the books are not available, nor in Laval, nor in Bujumbura, nor anywhere, so I always end up buying my books online because it's completely useless going to the store...one more thing, they are always changing the locations for each section, so every time I go I have to waste time trying to find what I am looking for because it is never in the same place, and the employees seem to be trained to avoid customers, so we end up roaming all around the bookstore trying to find a book or ordering the books for a later pick-up because they are not available in-store. We went in looking for a children's book in French and the options were limited, however we didn't leave empty handed! This Indigo has been my home for two years now. Maybe it's not the best bookstore ever, but it has its quirks. It has tons and tons and tons of GOOD books, adorable notebooks, awesome (useless, but awesome) gadgets and things! Most of the employees know their stuff and they're really nice. You can relax in the middle of downtown, where things are usually not calm, there's so much things going on outside, but when you step into Indigo, all the stress is away! Have you ever gone shopping at Trust and not bought anything? You have? Because I haven't! Every time I walk into this bookstore I buy something, or many somethings, and I don't think I've ever returned anything. Their website is also amazing, and offers awesome deals on literally everything. New books are usually 15 or 25 percent off which is AMAZING. I mean, right when you walk in there's sales, and I don't know about you, but when I see sales I go ham and buy everything. Anyway, let's get back in topic. This store is top notch. This tiny café is a great find! Quiet oasis away from the noise and crowds on Ste-Catherine, it's a beautiful space on the 2nd floor of the Indigo bookstore. They offer local products at fair prices and the café smells of new books and fresh beans! Joy! I got the cranberry muffin and a soy latté - both were tasty and up to par with what is normally served in those cool hipster cafés that we all know and love. read more

My favourite book shop in Montreal. Having gone to McGill, just up the street, I would easily walk down to indigo for a spot of reading and browsing nearly every day! There are lots of armchairs and windowsills to be had, and with the massive windows surrounding the floor, there is always plenty of light to see by. The small cafe, despite not letting you take unpurchased bookes in, does have satisfactory fare. And (!) freely available water! (a first in Montreal) Definitely a good bookstore to visit. I particularly like their New Age and Fantasy sections. The computer one is geared a little bit too much for newbies and often has out of date books. read more

I could have stayed in this bookstore all day! It has an inviting atmosphere and the staff is very helpful. Half of the books are in English and the other half is in French. The bookshelves are really tall and have a wonderfully edited selection of books. There aren't tons of each book like in your major bookstores but 1-5 of each which means there really is a HUGE selection! I mostly focused on cookbooks, craft and kids books. About 1/4 of the store has other retail items for baby care, toys, home decor and kitchen. There's even a baby grand piano in the cafe for anyone to stop in and play. There seriously is something for everyone. My only complaint is there are no seats except the ones in the cafe. read more

I love this chain. It's really much more than a book chain. In this store, it's two levels and the top level has a piano where customers are encouraged to play and a cafe. It has a huge home section with some cool stuff. A bit pricier than you'd expect but you can tell the quality is really good. The book selection is fantastic. If you're a fan of graphic novels you have to stop in and check out their selection on the second floor. Tons in English - we always buy at least one when visiting this area as they have titles that you don't usually see in US stores. It's a busy location so be prepared for a line at check-out. You can get a Plum Card and get savings in store and online (bonus - they ship to the US!). Fun stop to browse, listen to some piano music and find that hard to find title you've been searching for. read more

Despite the fact that I got an e-reader a few years ago I still like to buy the occasional book from time to time simply because I love the feeling of holding a book in my hands. If you want English books then Indigo is the place to come. The store is accessible through Place Montreal Trust and spread out over two floors so you will find plenty of books as well as items to decorate your house, knick knacks, etc. I love coming here and perusing their selection to see if I can find any good reads. read more

They have a piano for patrons to use but the staff headsets don't work well if someone plays dramatic music. Unfortunately they had this awesome guy stop playing music because it was too load....you lose lots of points on this one! @indigo get your act together and figure something out with your equipment, clients appreciate the good player. BILINGUAL CHILDREN BOOKS It's connected to a mall. They charged only city tax (5%) for a children book with phone set. This is a chain like Barnes and Nobles. They only offer French and English children books. I was advised to call other locations to see which one offers other languages. They have a bargain section but wasn't really a bargain. Most bargain items where for English children books. There are 2 floors and the children section is upstairs. You would need to walk all the way back. It's not just a bookstores. They sell many other types of things. There was a section for decor. French talking books are very limited. Most of them were the type that includes a cd though. Urbourne carried a press on one for 120 words. They didn't have the interactive sound books in French. read more

One product, one price! After going on the Indigo website, looking for a book priced at $24, I was given the option to grab a copy at my local store instead of having it delivered home. I therefore went there to pick it up but realized that the price on the tag was now $38. Thinking it was a misprint, I came to talk to the closest sales associate who told me online prices were not the same as store prices! In other words, online clients get a preferential treatment and stores cannot even match the website' prices. Indigo should seriously review it's pricing policy if it wants to keep customers going to it's local store. The cost of running a brick and mortar business does not explain a $14 increase of price on a $24 item. Furthermore, the Indigo website did not mention that by going to their store I would have to pay 50% more for my item. read more

This is a less well-known, but amazing study spot! I could set up shop here for hours. It's also nice to pick up a new book every now and then too! It is more of a cool, hip bookstore compared to the classic set up. read more

I agree with Charles, we don't have a lot of options in English bookstores, and this Indigo is quite nice. Architecturally it's uplifting, with the ground floor opening up with an open circle staircase to a larger second floor at a central corner spot on McGill and St Catherine, two floors with high ceilings, two walls of windows. I mean it's a chain where all the fonts and colours in all the cities are the same and the actual owner is elsewhere, so I try to support Paragraph up the street on McGill, or Drawn and Quarterly, or the secondhand bookstores instead, but sometimes you just need to be surrounded by more books. I have always found the staff in the fiction and music sections at this Indigo to be super nice, knowledgeable and helpful and not on the sell. The café has good quality coffee and some tasty sandwiches, some of the seating is hard and wobbly, but there are a few big comfy chairs tucked by the giant windows if you get lucky. read more
