This library is an excellent place to host an event and a true community resource. I have attended several events here, from CreativeMornings to a minority career fair, and every experience has been well organized and welcoming. The space is gorgeous, flexible, and works beautifully for both professional and creative gatherings. We also host our neighborhood meetings here, which has been a great experience. The library consistently offers free classes, helpful staff, and access to a wide range of resources that make it more than just a place to study or work. It genuinely serves the community. When I am there working or attending events, I always try to sit by the windows overlooking the courtyard. The view of the skyline is a bonus and makes long days feel lighter. The central library is an amazing resource for families and individuals. They offer great classes and programming. I participated in a linocut workshop and enjoyed learning a new skills - for free! I have also attended some great speaker series and conferences here. The kids zone is a great place to spend an hour or two with a toddler. The parking garage only costs a few dollars and there is a ton to keep my daughter busy. She loves the magnet wall, toys, and visual displays. Indianapolis Central Public Library is what dreams are made of! Everything from the architecture when we step in to the royal historic reading room to the expansive 6 floors full of books, CDs, DVDs and play area - you name it and ICPL has it! My first visit and I fell in love with the design, structure and glass design. You are transported to a different era, an era that speaks knowledge, growth, thoughts and sheer joy for bibliophiles! The 1st floor has many events happening including naturalization ceremonies and many other significant activities. The place is abuzz with people but step into another floor or reading room and you are quietly transported to another era! Highly recommend checking out ICPL! Must go! read more

This has got to be one of the more impressive edifices devoted to public services I'd ever seen. I went up the escalators and ended up on the sixth floor, a number which I had to check because I'd lost count. The facility has both an older stone front and a fancy modern glass structure behind it. Like most public libraries, it does serve as a place for people who don't have anywhere else to be, but unlike some, it actually has room for everyone. As with most such spaces, the term "library" is kind of obsolete, because only a minority of people come for actual books, but the snappy free wifi, work space, and other services provide a tremendous amount of value. For anyone who hasn't been, this is what major public libraries in Australia look like, and perhaps other parts of the world, but it is very unusual to find a public one that looks like this in the U.S. read more

The Central library is a gem of Indianapolis. The atrium is so impressive and I love how the original historic architecture has been preserved in the front of the building. Exploring the front rooms is always an adventure and I love sitting on the top floor to read in front of the sunny windows for a fantastic view of the city. I also love the idea of using the facility as a wedding venue, I saw it being set up once and was in awe of how beautiful everything looked. I'm a little surprised that I've never reviewed Indy's Central Library. Located in downtown Indy, Central Library is considered the hub of Indy's public library system. The original building was built in 1917 and designed by Paul Cret. It was constructed of Indiana Limestone in the Greek Doric style and was considered an icon of its time. In 2007, a six-story glass and steel framed addition was designed by Evans Woollen and added quite a few amenities and services to this library location. Features of Central Library include: The Learning Curve - a high-tech area for kids, teens, and their families. The Center for Black Literature and Culture - The CBLC's collection includes specially selected literature, music, movies, and artwork highlighting the contributions of black icons, specifically those with Indiana roots. Indianapolis Special Collections Room - Funded by Nina Mason Pulliam, this collection houses archival materials. Assistive Technology Room - This room seeks to enhance the library experience for those who benefit from assistive technology. This includes CCTV and features for those with mobility, visual, and learning disabilities. Additionally, this room has handheld magnifiers and magnicams. Computer Training Lab - Offers a variety of training and educational opportunities. 3D Printing Equipment - An S5 Ultimaker Printer, a 3D Systems Cube Printer, and a Maker Navigator Printer. They also have monthly Makerspace workshops, though you can also schedule 1:1 time with a librarian to learn more. Book-a-Librarian for Business Resources The Chris Gonzalez Collection - For over 25 years, this collection publicly served the LGBTQ community in Indy. In 2017, Indy Pride entered into an agreement for the collection to be housed at Central Library. Newspaper and Microfilm (Non-circulating) A Patent and Trademark Office Foundation Collection - Especially important for non-profits and grantmakers. Central Library also includes free Wifi, early learning computer stations, public computers with Microsoft Office, Meeting Rooms and Event Spaces (for reservation), Study Rooms, scanners, color copy machines, color printers, mobile printing, exam proctoring, outgoing fax, bike-up and walk-up book returns, typewriters, a cafe, bike racks, below library parking (paid after 30 minutes), and a Federal Depository Library Program. Whew. That's a lot for one library. This library is spacious, clean, well cared for, and you can even host weddings here (I've gone to one and am going to another one in just a couple days!). I've also gone to a film festival here that was hosted in a public auditorium. Of course, Yelp has also hosted events here. This was one of Indy's gems even before the 2007 addition. The 2007 addition made it possible to expand library services and also kept the original building faithful to its historic roots. Indy's central library is AMAZING! Here's why: 1) Space: It's MASSIVE with floor after floor of literally every type of book you can imagine. It's historic so it transports you into a different world when you first enter. As you go deeper into the library, you'll see how they merge the old with the new with the beautiful new architecture they added. 2) Programs: Out of every library I've been to in the world, this one has the best programming. For example, the first floor is mainly for kids of all ages and on a Saturday morning, they literally had 6-10 different events and story times within a 45-minute period of time. My toddler LOVED it. It is very spacious, clean, well organized and staff are welcoming. This building is a work of art. There is a huge section of every genre. Even the children section is pretty impressive. There are 5 stories in this library and there is elevator and escalator access. There are plenty of tables to study on each floor. The bathrooms are clean, computers work well. It sort of felt like I was at a Museum. The reading rooms were nicely decorated. There must have been a lot of contribution from a lot of people for this library. The word on the street is true. I got my Central Library card last night and it was wild. (Got to bang the gong at Yelp Bazaar announcing it!) Here's why I love the library: - Architecture: It's unreal, with new library meeting old, it's super interesting. - Views: I'd always come here during college to study on an upper floor. So many walls are glass, allowing you to see all the way into downtown. - Book Selection: There's thousands. With six floors, the library has every type of book you could want, as well as CDs and DVDs. There's even cute book carts you can push around if you're going to rent a lot. - Private Rooms: Have a group project or presentation? Book a private room (that also has an amazing view of downtown). -2nd Floor Cafe: No need to stop studying to leave and get food/coffee. You can get it in house (and also get Broad Ripple Chips). I LOVE libraries and this one has a WHOLE wing dedicated to Black History and the greats. I spent a whole day exploring the historic areas of this building and felt so rejuvenated leaving. Much better than the Central Pubic Library. Oh what a difference an L can make. I haven't borrowed books from here because of course I'm not a member, but I have been inside and out, and it's a really gorgeous building. Of course it doesn't compare to some of the libraries on some of the campuses of the Great Schools I've been to, including my homeschool back in England where we have one of the most famous libraries in the world. But for Indianapolis this place works really well, and is gorgeous and I don't really have anything bad to say about it. read more

This is one of my favorite places.... I have always loved the library and this one is amazing. Aesthetically it is gorgeous with a melding of the historic building and the newer building added on...its a cool.place just to come and walk through. The atrium is bright and breathtaking and a great place to have events in the evening. (Tres expensive though) Now, to utilizing this place. The librarians are super helpful, the kids area is expansive and lots of fun for littles. Cool little places to study for older ones. I also have taken my kids to some of the activities and I was impressed, esp with the coding class a few yrs ago. There is a little cafe for snacks note. Multiple floors of books and other items to peruse or borrow. Computer lab is in the basement but there are tables of computers on most floors. So, a word about the homeless. Yes, there are a lot of homeless men and woman that you may see scattered about. This is downtown so hey The library is a warm dry place with bathroom facilities. Can you blame them? I study down here solo and have brought my kids umpteen times (I'm an indy native) and they have never bothered me or my kids. Like any public place be mindful about leaving your belongings unattended. Visit and support your local library and if you haven't been to this Central location at least once you're missing out. read more

They also have a great calendar of various events and groups that meet there. I recently attended a tech diversity event and was able to network with and discover other members of the tech community. This place is GORGEOUS. Are you sure this is a library and not an architectural landmark? The vaulted ceilings, tall windows letting in natural light...the atrium in and of itself is incredible. But wait! There's more! Check out the old library wing - you'll feel like you're in Hogwarts. And then, weave your way up to the top floor (numero 6) for lovely panoramic views of the Indy skyline. Even if you're not coming here to study or check out books, it's worth a visit just to walk around, explore, and take pictures. Use the parking garage for easy access to the library via elevator, plus it's pretty cheap if you're only going to be there a little while! If you get hungry, there's a cafe/deli area where you can grab a sandwich or cup of joe. Lots of seating and computers to be productive. The only reason I'm docking it a star is because during the day, the library attracts an interesting mix of people (read: can appear like a daytime homeless shelter). It's not overwhelming, but just something to keep in mind. I'd want to bring a study buddy with me just to have company! read more

You have to understand that I'm writing this review through the lens of a parent of two young children. I haven't seen much discussed about the children's section, or the safety of the library, so I'm writing this review for other parents who are wondering whether the Indianapolis Central Library is a safe and worthwhile place to bring their kids. The answer: yes and no. Yes, for these reasons: It's a beautiful place with outstanding architecture inside and out; the views from the 6th floor are amazing; the children's area is basically the entire second floor, so it's pretty big; there is a large selection of books in the children's area, so there's lots to choose from; there is a very neat stage in the children's section with a green screen, so kids can pretend to walk on the moon and it's projected on a TV; there are lots of little areas to sit and read or do whatever. No, for these reasons: 1. I saw one too many adult men without children hanging around the children's area. Look, I understand this is a public library and the public is allowed to roam wherever they want, but I'm going to break it down to you from a parent's point of view: If I see a homeless-looking man without a child in the children's section, my hackles immediately rise and I don't feel safe. That's just the way it is. 2. The bathrooms are lockedy in the children's area, and you have to ask the attendant out front to unlock them. On the one hand, that's awesome because then at least they know who goes in and out of the bathroom. On the other hand, it makes you wonder if a place where they need to lock children's bathrooms is a place you should be taking your children. 3. There are some shady-looking people in the library. Most are not shady-looking, but there are enough to make you go, "hmmm." It's no secret that the neighborhood surrounding the library is one of the most crime-ridden places in the country. I bring up this point so that, if you come here with kids, you stay aware of your surroundings. It's easy to get lost in a false sense of security when you're in a library because they are just such wonderful places, but this is one where you probably shouldn't let your guard down too much. 4. But in case you need a reminder that you're in a bad neighborhood, just visit the parking garage and you'll see panic buttons every 20 feet or so, on every pillar. It's nice to know that they're there if you need them, I guess? Heaven forbid. My point to this review is pretty much this: Taking children places is stressful enough without having to worry if you're going to be accosted while you and your kids look for a book to read. Will we come back to this library? Yes, definitely. I won't be coming by myself with kids, though, and I'll probably not feel as relaxed as I do when I visit other libraries. read more

This review is for the Hot Jazz for Cool Kids series at Central Library! I heard about the event series on Twitter, and I'm so glad I did! I took my 2 year old, and we had an absolute blast. The event is free and is one of three events in this series throughout the winter. Rob Dixon, Nick Tucker and three other world-class musicians performed for over an hour. In between songs they educated the audience on the history of Jazz (in an engaging way) and invited kids on stage to dance, sing and play with them. The event space (auditorium) was packed to the brim with kids, families and folks of all ages. The energy was great, people were happy and lighthearted. I haven't seen that many smiles on a freezing cold Winter day in a long time! These events are a great way to warm up, loosen up, and listen in on some of the best music this town has to offer! Plus, if its really chilly outside, consider using the $1 underground parking lot! read more

I went to the central library for a few of their Monday night classes downstairs. The knitting and crocheting was so relaxing once I dropped my shoulders and got the hang of it. I think I prefer crocheting to knitting though. The instructors were patient professionals. Another Monday I attended a page folding workshop and who knew that's a thing?! I can now teach others! Lastly, I made pompom birds for a nest! All of the supplies were free too. Woohoo! read more

This is a beautiful library in downtown Indianapolis. They have a gong they ring when someone gets a library card. I wanted to get a library card to ring the gong but I don't even live in Indiana. We had never been to the library before the Yelp event. What a beautiful space, the charm of the older portion and the great light space of the newer wing. There are lots of seating areas and very comfortable furniture. There are ample bathrooms, even when there are so many people in the space! The escalator plus nearby elevator make getting from floor to floor very easy. And the signage in the library made finding things easier. Forget about crowded coffee shops, this seems like a great place to hang out, do some reading, writing, computer work. And the cafe area would keep you well fed. If I ever find myself in need of a hangout space downtown I will definitely be back to the Library! read more

I thought I'd reviewed the library before, can't believe I haven't! What a gem we have in downtown Indy this 6 story library is full of awesome things! Not only are there tons of computers to use and a great selection of books but there's an incredible gallery that rotates themes/artists near the main entrance and an area dedicated to Black Literature & Culture. There's a massive area for children with a green screen and a room where they can rent robots. There are historical documents you can flip through & a room with some of the oldest publications that they'll put on the white gloves to show you. My favorite part of all of this is the programming they offer and it's not just for kids! They have 3D printing and coding classes, crafting, game nights, skills classes and more. I really can't say enough good things about this place! I've taken many international students and out of town guests to see it and have a tour. (Which you can set up in advance if you'd like.) They also have a parking garage with great rates. There's meeting spaces and private rooms you can reserve and an incredible staff. read more

This place is impressive! I visited the library for the 2017 Holiday Bazaar, and I was gobsmacked upon entering! The building is huge and beautiful and imposing from both the outside AND the inside! Inside there is a wonderful mix of older, classical architecture and new, modern style. Room after room and floor after floor of books books BOOKS. I don't live in Indy, but I would certainly come back to the library just to visit and gawk and peruse. Beautiful, friendly staff, centrally located. Yes, yes, and yes. As one of the Library employees said as we were conversing inside of the CBLC, "Indy needed this Center years ago." I couldn't agree anymore. Located inside the west wing (or the R.B. Annis West Reading Room) of the Downtown Public Library, the CBLC replaces what was a normal-looking library full of books and chairs and has transformed it into a place of many emotions, feelings, history, images, and uses. I got to speak with one of the lead women on the project, Nichelle, who explained to me the purpose and future of the Center. It stemmed from an idea within the Library staff, and with the help from the Lilly Endowment, has been turned into a place to pay respect and learn about Black culture in America and abroad. It pays tribute to local African American figures in our Hoosier state and community that played a pivotal role in making our society the way it is today. It does so through a variety of mediums: larger-than-life photographs, literature, interactive experiences, and an overall atmosphere that is welcoming to everyone. As Nichelle described, she wants this place to be a space for people of all colors and backgrounds....to learn about something/someone you might not know, to learn about and deeper appreciate, respect, and understand the African American culture/history, and to get you out of your comfort zone. The areas are all easily laid out: you have your literature about sports, music, fashion, history, etc. Inside of the Center is a beautiful piece filled with quotes, individuals' names, and words to describe the Center and its purpose. The Center will host many special events and will periodically change throughout its existence. It will be open whenever the Library's hours are and will have staff on hand (most of the times) to give tours and explain the Center into greater detail during its opening months. I am so happy that the CBLC exists within a place I have grown to love so much over the last few years. So I have been to the central library several times and this is the firs time I went for an event. The event was for a black history program and we had it in the new black history wing on the front west side of the building. The walls were full of Indiana black actresses, activist, and heroes. Also, there was a vast section on Obama (this was a highlight for me and I only noticed it because its where we sat for the event we were at. The only thing I didn't like was the space was more narrow vs. wide which made it hard for me and my friends to sit together... But it was a fabulous event and space :) read more

I am not sure why I waited so long to visit this library since I see it everyday! I was forced to visit when I had to return an item and didn't want to go to the one I frequent which was several miles away. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The library is extremely spacious! There are several reading rooms. There are four floors, a nice gated lawn, and parking garage underneath. They have a large collection of items to check out books, CDs, DVDs, magazines. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I have seen events held there, and they look beautiful. read more
