Make a 30ish mile out of the way tangent to see the world's most (in)famous rodent? Sure, why not?…read more Here's what matters: - No, we would never dream of coming here on a certain day in February - Parking was super easy at the rear lot for the library/police station/fire department/hair care/tire center - Apparently when it snows and gets icy, the locals don't believe in salting their sidewalks - We saw Phil in his burrow from the outside window. Downside is that Phil's burrow looked a little philthy. Looked like some combo of gnats/flies/ants/bugs in and around Phil's food dish which is kind of disgusting. Is their a need to come here? Of course not. But I guess what the hell, just to say that you've been to a place that is semi-relevant in this country's consciousness for a brief time in the morning once a year.

Most times the reason to come to a library is because you are a bibliophile. But there is a…read moreparticular reason to come to the Punxsutawney Memorial Library. And it is not for the books. The library is home to Phil's Burrow. Yes, that Phil. Punxsutawney Phil. You know who I'm talking about. That loveable dude that we all either want to hug or hate on February 2nd. Groundhog Day. I do have to be an aside here, and it has to do with the movie. If you saw the movie and you think you know, you don't. The movie wasn't even taped in Punxsy, it was taped in some town in Illinois. For the longest time I had no idea where this was located and I have been to the festivals at least twice in my life. I thought it was some mystical place that would be glamorous, but it isn't. Well, it is a bit mystical as it is a library. You can view Phil one of two ways. You can view from outside and see into his burrow. Or, or maybe and, you can go inside the library and view him on the platform in the children's literature section of the library. You will get to see Phil in his habitat. But you know what is really cool, Phil has a spouse. You will never guess what his spouse's name is...Phyllis. I was impressed by that. Give this a stop while in the area.

PASSION - a strong feeling of enthusiasm, excitement or fondness for something…read more ----- I have been asked many times by other yelpers about my love for covered bridges and I didn't really have the answer. So I thought I would take a moment to explore my unconscious reasons and came up with an explanation of sorts. In the simplest of terms and the cleanest of definitions, I have a strong passion for things that last or endure against all odds. I am a total sucker for ANY movie that highlights fighting for what you believe and not letting obstacles and challenges overtake, limit or define you. Shawshank Redemption, Freedom Writers, The Help, The Blind Side, Pursuit of Happyness, Nell, Fault in Our Stars, The Longest Ride, The Color Purple, Wild, Slumdog Millionaire, the animated films UP / Cars / Despicable Me / Inside Out and yup, even Forrest Gump are all examples of a small population of movies that inspire me to love better, see the best in others, learning from my own mistakes and live like I mean it. So when you combine that with my desire for peace and harmony among all man, it makes sense that my love for covered bridges is as natural as breathing. Not only is a bridge symbolic of connecting two sides separated by a barrier or chasm, it can also represent overcoming obstacles and transitioning to a new destination. I suppose a bridge most represents hope, which would also explain why I feel it important to maintain them. ----- The sign near the bridge reads: "This is the last remaining bridge anywhere along the Susquehanna River" which I would assume would give it historical precedence to the local government. Its structural support has been extensively reinforced with steel making it strong enough to remain in service for vehicular traffic, but it could use serious refurbishment to freshen its appearance and extend it's life span. BRIDGE FACTS Year Built: 1873 Builder: Thomas McGee Length: 107 feet Renovated: 1978 & 1994 after being damaged by heavy snowfall Truss type: Burr Arch Location: West Branch of the Susquehanna in Mahaffey, Pennsylvania ----- FINAL THOUGHTS I drove considerably out of my way to view this bridge and found it to be a little disappointing. Despite its appearance in my pictures, this bridge is the very definition of putting lipstick on a pig. Someone has taken the time to paint it to make its appearance more attractive, but it shows signs of serious decay in the wood most exposed to the elements. I have to remind myself that people don't really care about stuff like this anymore. But I wish they did! I wish they cared about connections and bridging chasms not only in historic structures like this, but in our differences as well. Here's to all bridges of any kind and maintaining them. 2016/18

On his 75th birthday the town honored him for all his achievements-both military and screen with this statue. The ironic thing about the statue is that it wasn't ready in time for the birthday ceremony. The town substituted a fiberglass one in its place which was later moved next door to the Jimmy Stewart museum. Dressed randomly in Jimmy's movie outfit from "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" suit, he wears a fedora and has one hand in his pocket and the other pointing out. This was known as one of his common standing gestures and had great posture. The statue sits on top of a concrete pedestal. Nearby the museum is a state marker that addresses his legacy and work. Check out the actual statue if you are going to the museum or just strolling around town. Jimmy got his boyhood education at a school which later became part of Indiana University of PA.
