In Charleston, there are few ethnic grocery stores. This little gem, whose name I am not even sure…read moreis "Venta De," has been around for years, under the radar. It is generally quiet, with one worker at the counter. There are several coolers with canned drinks Mexican cheese, sausage, eggs and milk. There is a moderate sized selection of canned peppers, salsas, soups and beans. There are also jars of adobe, mole and pippin paste, which can be hard to find at your typical grocer. The next aisle contains masa, dried beans, rice, tortillas, sopes and corn husks. The back of the store has a huge display of dried spices and many varieties of dehydrated chilies. Near the register is a large Tupperware container full of authentic Mexican baked coffee rolls and cookies. They also have a small selection of cowboy boots and Mexican artwork. There is a visa/MasterCard sign on the door but to buy food, it is cash only. I have always felt a little odd coming in here as I have not been greeted warmly and my Spanish is rough, however, when you need supplies to make homemade tamales, this is a good option.

And y'know what: you can't get "overwhelming" selections of spices, teas, and sugars virtually anywhere else, so that's a GOOD thing. Every one offers a glass jar that you can open to "smell" the sugar/tea/spice you're thinking of buying. In the case of the teas, they will make you a hot/iced version of the tea (and charge for it, but it's surprisingly affordable) to try as well. After awhile, all of the scents kinda blend together (especially for like, hickory or smoked scents), but it's super cool and a ridiculous level of selection. They have smaller pouches, larger bags, or containers/jars for most items, letting you buy smaller quantities to try. I wanna say smaller pouches were starting around $6 (September 2025). They had quite a few blends of demarara sugars that are going to be great for cocktail garnishing. (Salted caramel sugar? Burnt espresso sugars? mmmm!) And my meat-loving friends picked up a ton of different stuff. Expect to spend a bit in here. There are SO many things to see. The basics are divided into various walls (teas separate from sugars, etc.), but their display tables of seasonal merch in the middle of the store require some careful perusal too. Staff was friendly, and they definitely know their stuff, but they clearly know people get overwhelmed and left us alone. I did not expect to pop into the store, but honestly, I'm super glad I did.
