We love India and Indian food. This is the closest one to our home. We have been many many times over the 1years. Not once have we had decent service. The ambience is fine. The food is consistent and good. More consistent than the food is sad and resentful service. It's been so bad at times that it's obvious they would not darken their door. And if you can't make it an entire hour prior to closing, expect to call in a to go order. They consider it preferable anyway save for the lunch buffet. It's like arriving at party and finding that you were invited by obligation and clearly wasn't really wanted. More than 10 years of visits. Not yet have received acceptable service. This is my new favorite Indian restaurant in Asheville. It was recommended by an American friend who lived and worked for several years in India and he described it as the most authentic Indian food in Asheville. It's not a "destination" type of restaurant. It's in a plain strip mall off of Tunnel Road. It has small, nondescript parking lot frontage. We've passed it on many occasions and never tried it until now. Once you enter, it's actually quite large, with a bar area and large padded booths that are private and comfortable. It's very clean and well maintained. Service was good. It wasn't busy when we went on a Sunday evening. But given how good the food is, it should be busy! There are so many choices on the menu, it was hard to narrow our choices to four. There are many items you don't see in most Indian restaurants. This is some serious Indian food! We chose well, as everything was very good. Here's what we had, ranked from fantastic to still darned good. Note we had all chicken as the protein, but for many of the dishes they offer lamb, shrimp and salmon as well -- or vegetarian. (1st) Kolhapuri: So much going on here, and each ingredient contributed to the taste. It has cinnamon, clove, coriander, cumin, poppy seeds, red chilis and a hint of coconut. It smells and tastes like nirvana. (2nd) Tikka Masala: This is our benchmark, like lasagna in an Italian restaurant, and theirs was very good. Rich, creamy and with just enough heat. (3rd) Vindallu/Vindaloo: Very good taste, but packing some serious heat, even in the potatoes. (4th) Chicken Curry: This is a yellow curry, sort of like a Thai or Japanese curry. It was milder, but still quite good. They ask you for your heat level choice: mild, medium, medium hot or hot. We got everything medium except the vindaloo, which we ordered medium hot. We eat a lot of spicy food. Medium was good for us. The medium hot vindaloo was great for those in our party who want some real burn. It was borderline too hot for me. I can only imagine what hot is like in this case. The basmati rice served with all the dishes was warm and fluffy with excellent flavor. We got a couple orders of garlic naan, which was nice and crispy with a good dose of garlic. For dessert, we shared a wonderful Kulfi (Indian ice cream with vanilla, pistachios, almonds, rose water) served with fresh whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate. A great way to end the meal. There are so many other menu items that we want to try. We will definitely be back. If you love Indian food, you need to give this place a try! read more

Meh. We had the weekend buffet. The food is decent, but there is not a wide variety of choices. The raita was tasty, and there were a couple of salad choices. The kheer was very watery, and the pudding tasted like it was made with jello instant vanilla mix. Recently heard that the lunch buffet was back (used to eat there every Friday before Covid) and I took 2 friends today who had never been. I was so embarrassed.... because I told them the food was amazing. But, the buffet had only half the food options they used to have, the naan was dry and hard and nothing tasted special like it used to. Sad to say that we will never go back. read more

I went in expecting a lunch buffet. It is disappointing to not have one if that is what is posted on your yelp page. Please update it. Even though there wasn't a buffet we decided to stay. The food was well prepared and delicious. If you order it spicy they will come through on it. The garlic naan was delicious and so were the sauces. We had the green mint and tamarind. We also had the popadom. I'm not sure if those were made in house but they were also quite good. My matteer paneer was loaded with flavor and cheese cubes. Ohhhhh man did it have me sweaty! I ate a late lunch on June 11th. The combo plate I ordered had 3 curries. It came with roast chicken and also naan. Everything was great until I saw a hair in my green curry. I showed the waiter/host. He apologized but did not offer me anything. He came back to show me the long hair and said none of the men in the kitchen had long hair but I don't think it was my own hair. I don't think I will be going back. We went back to India Garden Restaurant yesterday for lunch. The buffet was not open because we were there on a Wednesday. So we ordered off the menus. The food was off the charts delicious! So much flavor in every bite! The naan was excellent with a perfect chewiness and crunch! Divine with the 3 types of 'dips' on my Veggie order. My husband had chicken kabobs with ginger masala dip (?). The chicken was beautifully seasoned and so tender! The basmati rice was excellent. All with Chai tea! Yummy! We have been enjoying India Garden for over a decade now and continue to do so. Everything mentioned in my 2013 review remains true. Some of the vegetarian dishes really do remind me of my life in S. India years ago. We were so glad to see the lunch buffet return after Covid, though we loved both of the Thali plates that were offered instead that proved delicious too. Dinner remains hands down excellent, though pricey - and worth it! The lunch buffet tab seems to have increased quite a bit over the years - as of course everything does - so it would be lovely to have some Indian beverages included on the buffet (as another downtown Indian restaurant does so nicely in self serve carafes) - especially lassi salt - which adds so much to the meal -and maybe chai. read more

Loved the decor inside very simple. We ordered two appetizers Paneer Pakora and the assorted platter. They were alright, we enjoyed the dips that came with them more than food aspect of the appetizers. The appetizers were a little dry and seemed low on flavor without the dips. For our entrees we had Tandoori Mixed Grill and the Kasar Malai Kabab with some garlic naan. We also ordered a mango lassi. The entrees were great and full of flavor. We enjoyed that the tandoori mixed grill offered a variety of meats and the veggies were wonderful. The cashew sauce on the kasar malai kabab was yummy curry flavor and tater really good with the garlic nan. The garlic naan was seasoned and garliced well, the texture was fluffy. The mango lassi was very delicious and on thicker side. The flavor had a good balance of mango and yogurt. The service was mediocre, our server didn't seem to care and just had an emotionless face. Made a weird comment about us not finishing our food. Either then we would probably order take out in the future. Our totally for a special drink, glass of wine, 2 apps, naan, and 2 entrees was around $75 for two people. But we had enough left over for later for a second meal. After a 5 year old past review this is still a solid three stars. Good but not great. Fast and friendly service a plus. Extensive menu with something for everyone. Appetizer sampler was okay, best part was a latke like potato cake. Mixed Tandoori was pretty good. Aloo Gobi was good but I've had better. Garlic naan was very delicious! This was the only Indian restaurant I visited in A-Ville. I went because a friend recommended it. I went on a Sunday afternoon at lunchtime and I was surprised there weren't more people there eating. I got a veggie dish with potatoes and cauliflower. I opted to order from the menu (rather than the buffet) and made sure the server knew I wanted the dish extremely mild and he even responded back saying he understood-however-my dish was actually spicier than my friends dish and he requested his to be medium spice. I asked to have it sent back and they came back out with another plate but this one didn't seem to have any seasonings. So whatdya do? I added some salt and at what I could. Honestly I've been to other places where I didn't have any problems. The server was there to check if the dish was prepared well-ours didn't ask. I actually had to go hunt down our server to tell him about my meal being too spicy. While I understand that sometimes people have an "off" day there were 6 employees there walking around and I just felt like the customer service could've been better. I've never walked out of a restaurant before ordering until today. My husband, daughter and I came in for lunch. When we walked in an older man pointed in the direction of where to sit. We sat down and he came over speaking to himself in his language, very aggressively. To the point where my husband said "excuse me?" Then he said "water", he yanked out my napkin from my glass, pored out water and left us. We sat for 10-15 min and he never came back to us. I just had the worst dining/ takeout experience of my life tonight. By far the worst costumer service imaginable. I have never been treated so rudely and honesty I am still shaken up by my experience there. When I asked to speak to the manager I was told no they're not here. When I asked to give my number so the manager could call me later I was told there was no way I was going to get to talk to the manager. I'm ok with the fact they they totally messed up my order, and over charged me. We all make mistakes. But I'm not at all ok with them not fixing it and then refusing to let me talk to anyone else to make it right. I honestly can't believe a place can treat people as I was treated and stay in business. I sincerely hope this review is read by the manager and they do the right thing and contact me. So my party of 4 attempted to order carry out from the Asheville location, but we accidentally ordered from the India Garden in Virginia. There is very little evidence that you may be ordering from their other location in Virginia as they share a website and menu. The workers told us that this happens all the time, but then still treated us like we were complete idiots. Perhaps instead of insulting your guests over a simple, admittedly common mistake, they should try fixing their website so its easier and clearer, or confirm on the phone, that you are indeed ordering from the correct restaurant since they are named the exact same thing, with the exact same menu. I also would like to point out that there are zero prices listed on the website, so it can be quite surprising to find out your curry costs 20$. anyways we were hungry, so we decided to eat in and re ordered our food. They sat us in some chairs temporarily to deal with and seat a group of older people who came in behind us, leaving us feeling like we were in trouble waiting outside the principals office. We were at the restaurant for an hour and a half as the service was incredibly slow since they didn't like us very much to begin with. One of my party members inquired about a beer, said he didn't want it yet, and then they brought him the beer anyways. The servers sat directly across from us and gave us death stares as we ate our meal. It was a strange experience and honestly, I kinda live for awkward moments so it was very memorable. This Indian restaurant is located in a strip mall near Joann fabric on Tunnel road. I've been here twice now. Once for the lunch buffet and another time for dinner. The lunch buffet was pretty tasty (but definitely not as good as Mela). The dinner though, was fantastic. I ordered the Lamb Rogan Josh and naan and my husband had the tandoori Lamb Chop and naan. We were both very, very pleased with our dinners. The Rogan Josh was one of my favorites that I've had with rich flavors, perfect creamy consistency and moist lamb chunks. My husband loved his lamb chops, his eyes were rolling in the back of his head as he devoured his dinner. I can't wait to be back again really soon. My only complaints about India Garden is that the service is horrible. We were there on a very slow night and still got very bad service. We felt like we were being ignored the whole time and when the servers were at our table, they treated us like we were an inconvenience to them. read more

As someone who has been to India many times, the food was below average, I wouldn't recommend to Indians looking for that "home taste." Many of our favorite Asheville restaurants have participated, but their foods have not all traveled well, on their way to our front door. India Garden is an exception, a real highlight.
