Independence received its statue in 1952, and it still occupies a prominent position n front of Memorial Hall and the Civic Center. As roadside monuments go, this one carries some documented history. Roadside America notes its original 1952 dedication and its later 1984 rededication by President Gerald Ford, a detail that gives this statue a surprising brush with national political history. The Smithsonian's art inventory further confirms its place within the broader portfolio of mid-century Liberty replicas distributed across the United States, tying the Independence figure into a larger cultural moment when communities embraced these small symbols of civic pride. As a visitor experience, the statue reads as modest but sincere. It is next to…read morea very old bridge that was the original route here before it was updated and modernized with a wider road and bridge. Have we lost something for that speed and efficiency? Progress. The large marker is in very good condition at the side of the road and is easily readable. "During the Civil War, militias from both the Union and Confederate sides were stealing the Osages' cattle, harassing their villages, and blaming the Indians for raids actually committed by Americans. Osage leader Charles Mongrain cautioned everyone to leave his people alone: "I most earnestly warn all intruders, trespassers, and others not citizens of the Osage nation to leave the nation immediately." It continues, "In May 1863, a few miles east of here, an Osage hunting party confronted about 20 strangers riding through their territory. A shot was fired, and one of the Osage went down. His comrades chased the trespassers about 15 miles and finally overtook them near Drum Creek, killing all but two (who escaped). The strangers turned out to have been Confederate officers, marching west with orders to recruit volunteers and encourage rebellion in New Mexico & Colorado. The Osage has foiled the plot." It is marker number 56 and it was erected in 2012 by the State of Kansas. There is room to stop and then continue across the old bridge, thinking about how things used to be.
