Independence is the county seat of Montgomery County, which is named for Richard Montgomery, a United States general killed in the American Revolutionary War.
The building is in the Classical Revival style and was completed in 1887. It is built of gray Bedford stone with a raised basement and a prominent porch on the south side supported by two large two-story columns. The symmetrical facade, recessed stone-framed entrance and vertical windows give it a highly formal look that is typical of late nineteenth-century civic architecture. The 1931 north addition shows that the courthouse has grown with the county rather than standing still.
The entire landscaped grounds are slightly raised which gives it an even more impressive stance. There is parking on all sides and I had no troubles walking the grounds this afternoon.
