Woo-hoo, I found a zongzi at Lian Hua today!! :D Never mind that it cost CHF 3.95 and was made in…read moreThailand. I unwrapped the fragrant bamboo leaves and devoured the sweet, savory, and slightly spicy goodness of glutinous rice stuffed with shitake, mini dried shrimp, pork, cooked peanuts, and salted duck egg as soon as I got home. This item didn't qualify for the 15% discount, but it was totally worth it to find one of my favorite foods in Zürich. Totally yummy, but knocking one star off for price. Too bad the Dragon Boat Festival only comes once a year...

Pretty sizeable market but some prices are good, some prices are still Zurich/Swiss (aka…read moreoutrageous). Chinese vegetables like Choy Sam which you'll get for about $1 a bunch in Chinatown in NYC is almost CHF 5! Kimchi is out of the question--I only saw about 4 brands, in small glass jars of in plastic bags (very strange) and they were 8.95 for the largest jar which I could prob eat in one sitting easily. There are LOTS of sauces like hoisin, black bean, Szechuan, various hot sauces, soy sauces, fish sauces, etc. I saw curry pastes in more varieties and sizes than at Chiang Mai, but the prices were comparable. The best thing about this place is the ramen selection because they have an entire row dedicated to Korean brands and Shin ramen is CHF 1.45 a packet, no discount for buying in bulk or in the 5-pack (so unfair!) which is the same as an overpriced corner market in central Manhattan. So although it is hard on the wallet, what is a Korean girl to do? You need your ramen once in a while. There is a sizeable dumpling and various dim sum selection section and seafood including calamari, shrimp, squid, scallops, etc but I'm still not used to buying seafood in frozen form instead of fresh like you see at any Whole Foods or in a Chinatown. I'll have to update my review after I actually try the pork frozen dumplings I got such were CHF 20 for a bag (JEEEEEEEEzus) which again, in NYC Chinatown would be about $5. I was disappointed by the produce section because in Korean markets in the U.S., that is the best part with tons of selection and unbeatable prices. Unfortunately the produce they had was scarce and incredibly overpriced. I might as well go to Coop in Sihlcity for more variety. I did notice that what they had seemed fresher than Barkat but I may have visited in the earlier part of their delivery schedule. I've posted lots of pictures of the variety of products they have but as someone who doesn't cook Asian food often, it was hard to tell what most of the stuff was. I did find packets of ja-choy (the "Chinese kimchi") though so will have to try it. Also although they had credit card machines, they demanded cash. Not cool when you're spending CHF 50!

There is a good selection of produce at decent prices but almost all the spinach is wilted and wet (compare to the spinach so beautiful and perky at Marinello), the garlic is awesomely priced but I can't find a decent cucumber and there is mold on the cauliflower. The tomatoes are great but I feel they are more flavorful because they're older/riper than those at Coop or Migros. There is a good selection of fruit displayed outside and inside the store but I couldn't find my favorite: berries! No strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries. Also no kiwis or cherries :( oh well, there is a halal butcher and an amazing selection of couscous and a mega sized yogurt, not surprising. I loved seeing the diversity of the clientele but unfortunately I can't do all my food shopping just here and I'm looking for a one-stop shop which I will reluctantly have to rely on the Sihlcity Coop to fulfill. Like Lianhua this place is sizeable and the shelves are chock full of products but most of them are not part of my regular grocery/ingredient list so maybe I'll need to switch up my palate and recipe staple. There is a wider selection of household goods that you may need like cleaning liquids and napkins, etc than Lian Hua down the street. I've posted pictures of the seafood selection so will have to compare the prices to those as Lian Hua. They actually take credit cards which is great and there was a plentiful supply of herbs which I love--mint, rosemary, oregano, parsley, cilantro, and so on.

This review is for the second floor caviar store. I spent about 5 minutes here and all the while…read morethe only person on the store, the saleswoman, was charting on the phone. The prices are high. 21 swiss franks for a small portion of bilini is crazy. The foie gras was 60 franks for a jar which I bought in Paris de Galle for 39. They have a decent selection of caviar and I would have bought some, despite the high markup, if the saleswoman payed any attention. I haven't tried the caviar bar downstairs but the store near the lounge, which is pack and go, disappointed. For the markup, which is at least triple price, you really need to get off the cell and more on the sale!

The lady who helped me for foie gras was nice and helpful but when I went back for caviar, it was a nightmare. I asked the lady to show me the prices so my friends can pick, she put up the price list and Asim Aji (he refused to give me his name but I saw his name tag so he gave up) showed up and told her he would take care of the cashier. While I was waiting for my friends to message me which one she wants. He started teasing " Are you here just to look? Taking pictures? It is not to polite to just take pictures!" When I told him which one my friends want, he said it is out of stock. Due to his attitude before and there are so many containers in the display window, I unintentionally asked "Is it? But there are so many cans here? " He got angry and start shuffling the cans and made noise with those empty cans. And that's when I asked for his name and then he kept saying his name is not important...then I saw his name tag and requested to talk to the lady. After the lady came back, I asked the lady if it's out of stock and she said yes nice and professionally like all other people do and then I left. Thank you for caviar house prunier at Zurich airport, I ended this trip with a terrible memory.

Wandering around the heart of Old Town Zurich and stumbled upon a Japanese grocer…read more I walked in to casually browse the store to see what they have to offer in comparison to the international grocers in the States! The store is pretty small, it has your typical kitchen goods (cutlery, plates/bowls, etc.), sauces, snacks, souvenirs, dry goods, refrigerated section, small freezer section (dumplings etc.), and sweets. They do not have produce though! I think it has most of the essentials! The interior is clean, and the store is well organized. Some of the items were pretty expensive in comparison to what I am used to in the States, but everything in Zurich is more expensive!

I like to eat Natto for breakfast now…read moreand then but when I moved to Switzerland I sorta already accepted that I would no longer to be able to eat natto. So I was super happy to see that they stock not only one but three sorts of natto. Also, the price was quite reasonable (for Switzerland), I did notice that there were some other things like Kimchi were on the expensive side compared to other ethnic stores. Another plus is that YumiHana is clean and well organized- unlike some other Asian stores in Zurich. The store is quite small but well stocked: they have a wide range of Japanese and Korean cooking essentials which are often difficult to find in Europe. I found many of my faves: matcha KitKat, a small tub of gochujang (suited for the small fridges here), barley tea, good quality noodles, umeboshi, mirin etc. All the products were of good quality when I later cooked with then and ate them so I will be back for my natto fix!
