So with half an hour to kill before a hair appointment, I popped in to Truly Scrummy for a brew and…read morea bite. Boasting locally sourced food and home baked cakes, scones & tray bakes, it was a fair bet that I was going to like the place, and I wasn't disappointed. I was greeted warmly when I came in, I ordered tea and a toasted teacake and was invited to take a seat. There are 8 tables with 3-4 seats at each, so a decent amount of space. It's completely open plan so you can see the food prep & cooking area, I watched the two chefs chopping veg and putting in a big pot on the stove, and preparing the pastry cases for some kind of quiche or flan, and the smells were just delicious! My tea arrived in a teapot with a separate pot of milk, which always makes me happy as I'm dead fussy about my brew. My teacake was large and generously buttered which, again, pushed my happiness buttons. As I supped I eyed the scrummy looking cakes and tray bakes under the glass domes, slightly gutted that I didn't have time to indulge today. Perusing the menu it looks full of delights, from breakfast staples with a local emphasis (like the griddled dry cured yorkshire bacon sandwich, or the local pork sausage sandwich) to paninis, jacket potatoes, wraps, soups and much more. The loss of one star comes purely from a pricing front. £4.20 for a bacon sandwich or £6.80 for a panini is just a touch over the limits for me. Perhaps that's a little unfair as you can clearly see (literally!) the care and attention that goes into preparing the food. Who knows, perhaps when I come back and eat more, and I definitely will be back, I might eat them and decide the quality justifies it, but until then, four stars it is.

In retrospect, it was awfully silly to be surprised to find that a deli market would be mostly food based, but I digress! Though the market seemed small at the outset it was bigger on the inside, with each stall offering a variety of culinary delights. The wife and I both tried french macaroons for the first time, loads of different cheeses, some brilliant Extreme Chutney (with a side of delicious bhajis), and really interesting pork pies. All in all it was a really nice lunch adventure and I only wish I'd have had more cash on hand to sample a few more offerings!

The rain clouds had done their stuff in the morning and they managed to stay away while I was there. This is my first time at this event and to be honest I thought it would have been a bit bigger. There were a few empty stalls. But as I looked round that was on offer I took my time to sample a few cheeses, preserves and ales that were offered. I was impressed with the buffalo burgers as they were lovely and juicy. There were pies and pastries and cakes galore. My eyes spent an absolute fortune!! I came away after trying the many different wares that were on offer. As my purse strings are a bit tight this month so I only bought a litre of cider which I shall be trying tonight. It was a lovely way to pass a half hour but I came away wishing it had been a little larger!

Challenge Sandwiches has a pretty pink and white shop front that would befit a charming little cupcake shop making it stand out from the others with their stereotypical take away exterior. And I must say I do find the name rather amusing. They sell baguettes, wraps and paninis and also sell a range of sundries, such as samosas and bhaji. I admit to only having had a bite of one of their sandwiches, which at the time tasted amazing but this was at stupid o' clock in the morning with a rumbling tummy after a boozy night so I suspect most anything, especially containing melted cheese, would have tasted pretty good. The main thing that stood out for me was the customer service. There were a bunch of hyperactive drunken waxed-chested low cut t-shirted lads whooping and gallivanting around the limited space inside Challenge Sandwiches and generally exhibiting that notorious student lack of awareness of anything other than their own hilarity. The blokes behind the counter took it very much in their stride and watched bemused. They then proceeded to give me a free packet of crisps - score!

I haven't really gotten any of their other sandwiches, but the Donner is so good that I've just been sticking to what I know... maybe I'll be adventurous one day. What makes it so good is that they pack it with meat... PACK. I like meat is all. Seriously though... this place WOULD definitely get 4 stars, but just recently I went around Europe for a while and France and parts of Germany sell their Donner Kebabs on Panini-like bread instead of the toasted wrap they put it in here... Oh MY GOOD GOD... like these kebabs couldn't get any better... they totally did. I still go to Challenger as my choice in Leeds, especially since it's so close to my place, but after having a legit Kebab in some bread else where in Europe... I can't look at any other kebab the same way... Sorry Challenger.

Situated near the Chevin in some beautiful countryside, the Cheerful Chilli is a relaxed and cosy place. The food isn't gourmet but the quality definitely doesn't suffer for that. Rather, it seems as if they've decided to do fairly simple meals and do them really well. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, a bit like walking into a huge old stone-flagged kitchen, brightened up by lovely flowers on all the tables. It's the best of casual dining: unpretentious but attractive, service relaxed but not slow, and staff in T-shirts with friendly smiles and good knowledge of the food. Oh yes, the food. Hoo boy. I'm still so full it's actually hard to think about it. Since we were in a group of six, we decided to go for the 'Banquet' - a selection of starters, mains and desserts from the menu. It was £18.50 and wow... it was definitely value for money. We had a 'pre-starter' meze of two giant plates of couscous, halloumi, falafel, houmous, bread, olives and salad, which really could have been a generous starter on its own. But oh no, there were starters too: potato wedges with cheese, corn cakes with sweet chilli, nachos, and goat's cheese tart. All delicious. To be honest, at this point we could have left satisfied - it felt like we'd had a full meal already! But then the mains arrived: vegetable fajitas, kerala curry, enchiladas, roasted veg and pizza. Again everything was delicious - possibly the only weak point was the pizza which I think was homemade but had been a bit overdone which left it tasting a little like an oven pizza. But everything else was great. Nothing fancy: it was all stuff I could make at home, but just.... better. Hugely flavoursome in a way I can never quite get my dishes to be, and presented beautifully. So on to the desserts! We got wedges of the chocolate truffle cake (rich and divine), the cheesecake (maybe a little creamy for my taste but lovely fruit) and the chocolate nemesis (dark, fudgy, amazing). And what was maybe even better: a huge bowl of vanilla ice cream which was hands down the best ice cream I've ever had. I asked them where they got it and they said they make it themselves. I wonder if they'd consider delivering in bulk...? I couldn't quite believe that we were only paying £18.50 for a lovely meal that could keep you full for days, but yes, it was true. You can bring your own booze too, and they didn't charge corkage - champion! The reasonable-ness just continued with my friend being charged just 70p for the 7-up she ordered: smallest restaurant markup ever? And so we rolled home, vowing to return. I'm already planning a walk up to Otley for this very purpose - I can't think of a better place to welcome tired and hungry walkers!

All the other ingredients are presented in the glass chiller in front of you so you can clearly see what you are getting. They are in no way mean on the fillings either! My particular favourite is potted beef and their wonderfully creamy coleslaw! Magic. Had been a great hangover cure in my time!!! They also sell the meat, breadcakes, coleslaw, potted beef and some other things as part of a grocery shop and they do a good selection of hot and cold beverages. It doesn't seem much bigger once you get inside, but this is unimportant as it is essentially a takeaway. Brod will basically make you anything you like, and I mean anything - it's kind of like the savoury version of its neighbour Shaky Jakes. I last ate here at lunchtime, and as such, plumped for a rather fancy chicken tikka sandwich, but this place is as good for breakfast sandwiches as it is lunchtime. They do the usual plethora of unhealthy English breakfast sandwiches (you know, bacon, sausage, egg, grease) and open at 7:30, meaning you have time to get one in on your way to work/early lecture. The only criticism I can think of is that the service is often quite slow, but Brod does usually pack out at lunchtimes so this is kind of expected. Anyone who wants confirmation of quality of Brod's sandwiches should be informed that this tiny independent business has managed to hold its own for years despite a Subway opening directly opposite.

I'm sorry bread, I still love you but I think we need to see other people (some of the time). While on a recent jaunt to Leeds for work, what I really wanted to do for lunch was go to either Friends of Ham or Bundobust, I decided to be sensible and leave that to a trip for pleasure rather than business. Brød was conveniently located near the Civic Hall where I'd spent the morning so I called in on my way back to the train station. I then spent the first fifteen minutes of my train journey staring wistfully at my lunch having decided that I couldn't eat it until midday. When I opened the box to take a snap it smelled delicious which was quite distressing. It tasted pretty good but not as amazing as it smelled which was a bit of a disappointment. The salad part was a bit sad, but it did take the edge off eating a box of cheese for lunch. And sadly there was no option for a raita or other yoghurty style dressing so it was undressed. There was plenty of paneer though so I can't complain too much. I guess next time I'll have to just get a sandwich as I don't think the salad box really panned out.
