The place is family owned and run according to the best Italian tradition for trattoria. Super friendly and smiling people all over giving you any advice about the super delicious traditional food you are going to order. Starter with prosciutto, culatello, salame and pancetta is a must. Deliciousness for your taste buds and wow, how good was that piece of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese..... wooooooo!!! My first main dish was Tortelli di Zucca (pumpkin kind of ravioli) served with a very local soffritto sauce. Woooooooooooooooo!!! The capelletti were also super good and really like my mother's.... Yesssss!!! I stopped here but the second dishes were all super ones. Ok, nothing dietary or vegetarian, but this is all about super traditional tastes and super comforting northern Italian food. Like being on a Christmas banquet :) Local Lambrusco red wine is the one to drink. Nothing else. Rustic but so fitting the taste. I could not refrain from tasting the dessert and I went for Zuppa Inglese, can.t translate, but if you never got it..... you definitely miss something delicious. Espresso of course and yes, grab the bottle of Nocino to sip this Amaro while you chit chat and end this spectacular dining experience. So, tradition with real care to great tastes enhanced from "you are guest at my home" type of welcoming atmosphere. Not expensive. Book in advance as the place is small and can get crowded. Ohh, I did not mention, all over the walls pictures and posters from the cult Italian movies I mentioned earlier. They are proud of them, and so it should be :)

We decided to go for a late dinner as we had enjoyed what we had seen at the tail end of the lunch service. What a great choice! We were seated at a table for two across from the pass through from the kitchen. Normally I would not be overly pleased with this seat location, but the sheer volume of activity made it the place to be. We watched as a large number of dishes at a time were assembled and whisked off to their awaiting guests. We ordered a bottle of red wine from our server, an older Gentleman that clearly was one of the people in charge of the floor. We determined a couple of appetizers and ordered from him our selections. He immediately made us aware that our selections were not what we should order, given our wine selection and the specialties of the house. He couldn't have been more right as our appy's of spinach and pumpkin stuffed ravioli's in a butter sauce and tortellini in brodo (chicken broth) was outstanding. The lovely K found the brodo on the salty side, but I found it to be terrific. We make our own chicken stock at home, painstakingly using old fashioned methods, no salt added and found that this broth had a depth of flavour that is difficult to replicate. The ravioli's were superb, the pasta beautiful and delicate and the filling amazing. Our secondi, we had breaded veal for myself and grilled rib eye for K. We got to chatting with a German couple and her Father as our second course arrived and did not finish either. That said both were well prepared and although the only things on the plate (we passed on the accompaniments off the cart as we were already getting full) they were again perfectly prepared. The atmosphere is what one would expect from a place that caters to families, especially on a the Sunday of a long weekend. The following day was a national holiday (Liberation Day) so spirits were high, and the volume loud. People wander from table to table visiting. We watched a Grandpa, Grandma and Mother walk around with a baby each taking turns while the others visited. It was a heartwarming and stomach satisfying experience in the middle of Italy that we will not soon forget. Dining in places like this is what Italy and family dining is all about. To illustrate this further the German couple and her Father we met by chance as they were at the table beside us we will be dining with in Rome later on this week, how does it get better than that.

Trattoria del Tribunale is a great starting point for your Parma eating adventures, and you'll find it's recommended by Yelp, the Internet, your AirBnB Host, and everyone in between. With quality renderings of just about any Parma specialty, it's a great initiation into the region's culinary traditions. Of course, you have to start with the cold cuts. I went straight for the Culatello, but they've got it all: Prosciutto di Parma, Coppa piacentina, Salame di Felino, Mortadella. Or get a mixer. And of course some Parmigiano-Reggiano. Do yourself a favor and order the Arthichoke (Romano) style. Fantastic. From there you have a number of options. I chose to make my ravioli stand here with the sampler: fillings of cheese, pumpkin, and spinach. Very good. For dessert, I tried the Sbrisolona (Italian almong crumble cake). Pretty good. House wine was cheap and plentiful, and they had a good bottle list, too. Value is off the charts. Can't go wrong with this place.

Make sure you arrive before 12:30 because the restaurant suddenly fills up around this time. The atmosphere and service were very similar - no frills, but perfectly adequate. My dining companions all had pizza, which they report was very good. No complaints. I ordered a very basic chicken breast and French fries. It was nothing special, but that's exactly why I ordered it. I was looking for something uncomplicated and simple. This was a perfectly nice spot for lunch after visiting the museum, but I'd recommend arriving before 12:30 pm to beat the rush.

VERy simple, and I mean 1980's restaurant style in Italy. It was all grannies and Italian families on the Saturday that we were there. The place is bigger than it looks, with an outside garden and main dining room. The kitchen is bustling with Italian ladies who look like they were born making fresh pasta, which I loved. The menu offers typical favorites like prosciutto (we are in Parma!) torta fritta which are pillows of fried dough so good you'll eat them all. We followed that with two heaping (huge portions) of pasta, I got a ravioli stuffed with herbs and cheese and covered in a parmigiana, which was very light (satire). There is a guy with a bollito cart (boiled meats) that was kind of hilarious, I mean how many times in your life are you going to see some dude carting around a selection of meats in broth from table to table, that's Italy. We ordered the house lambrusco which frankly sucked but house wine can do that, my recommendation get a bottle. Awesome experience, very old-school, I'd wager this place is a bit of a find among locals. I wouldn't recommend this for a romantic date because of the bright lighting but they are very dog-friendly, in fact I think they preferred our dog over us. Ginger wins them all..
