A stylish new restaurant just a few steps away from the Duomo in Monreale. At the front there is a…read moresmall area designated by potted saplings where you can eat al fresco; inside, the medieval terraced house has been converted into a series of dining rooms on three levels. On entry, you will see straight into the immaculate glass-fronted kitchens, where smiling chefs will greet their diners with relish. The walls have been rendered down in places to expose original brickwork, and are otherwise covered with local ceramics, paintings, and shelved with wine. The tabling is tight; these people know they will get plenty of custom with their excellent food at very sensible pricing, so no space has been spared and in this respect it is more like a Paris brasserie. Expect to sit cheek-by-jowl with the locals and get ready for some social intercourse. Bricco sets its stall out as a destination for meat lovers, and backs up its meat-orientated menu with a Wine List containing some hefty national and local vintages. Kidneys were sauteed and glazed in an intense red wine and balsamic reduction. Vitello Tonnato had been made with fresh Tuna and garnished with local caperberries. Involtini of Lamb were deliciously, unctiously fatty and very tasty. A Sicilian-bred fillet of Angus was cooked to perfection: dark and crusty outside, meltingly pink and juicy within. Potatoes were oven-sauteed with fresh rosemary as only the Italians know how. For about 30 Euros one can dine regally. This place is destined to be in the next editions of all the guides, but right now I cannot find a single entry for it anywhere on the web. If you're out that way, be one of the first to try it!

We occupied the last unoccupied outside table around lunch time. The roman style pizza (with prosciutto) was very good, the birra rossa was excellent. (Malty and a bit sweet.) My lady enjoyed her bruschetta, which was brimming with ricotta. The service was a tad relaxed, but not bad.

An old boy was operating a pizza oven and he waved me to a table. That was my last human contact for quite a while. A group of men hung around the counter in front of the pizza oven talking to our old friend, and occasionally one of them would take a pizza over to a table; but they did not seem to be waiters, more hangers-on. Then a chap with a motorcycle helmet entered, put his helmet on the counter, and poured himself a coke. He, too, helped out from time to time, but was clearly not an employee. I'd obtained a glass of wine by now, and having placed my order I thought I'd pay a visit to the loo. The Mens had been combined with The Disabled Toilet - presumably to comply with the law - but the extra space provided within had been colonised by the two enormous steel lockers. Several essential components of the porcelain were missing. Some bare wires poked out of the wall. There was no flush. I searched vainly for 2 or 3 minutes for a chain, pedal, handle or something that looked as if it might release a stream of water. Eventually I spied a button under the towel rail, one and a half metres distant from the toilet bowl; I pressed it more in hope than expectation, and to my astonishment, the toilet flushed. There was no hand drier and the paper towel dispenser was empty. I took a deep breath and decided I'd run for it. But to my dismay, my Antipasti had been served in my absence and one of the hangers-on was waiting to shepherd me to the table. The food was as good as the toilets.
