The night we came, the opener was a meat plate. Plenty of salty Italian meats to make it a meal in and of itself. You can ask for as much as you want but save yourself for all the courses. Next came skewers of lamb sausage. They were so different and had a tang to them that was amazing. The third course was backed artichokes, nothing too special. Next was a beef broth that was excellent with bread. There was a soupy consistency to this. The pasta was next. Gnocchi was out first pasta. I could see them making it so I knew what was coming and the timing was amazing. This was followed by ravioli which was so fresh again, you could taste it. Our final course was a wild boar that was so soft and juicy. It really got me hooked on this meat. The desserts were average but who cares, we were so stuffed by then anyways on the good stuff. Plan to spend over 2 hours here as this is a meal to experience for sure!!

San Guiseppe has wine cellar, according to staff, date back. We felt totally and complete immersed in history and that was only the building. centuries of Sienese life. The cuisine honors Tuscan tradition while elevating it through precision and care. Each dish showcases excellent ingredients and confident execution, embracing regional flavors rather than reinventing them. San Guissppe feature traditional dishes such as handmade pasta, rich sauces, and tenders meats showcasing distinct flavors with bold seasoning. We order lasaguna and cheese salad...absolutely superb! Our servers were superior...waiting on you hand and foot. You did not ask for anything as it was already there. Our server, Marco, was kind, humorous and knowledgeable. The restaurant fills up with reservations for two seatings, and from the moment we sat down the pace felt rushed. We ordered drinks and a starter while deciding on the rest, but multiple staff members kept coming by trying to take our full order. It felt like they were pushing to move things along quickly. There were a couple positives. The chicken livers to start were quite tasty and something we didn't see often on other menus. The primi were underwhelming. The pasta didn't taste fresh like many other trattorias in Siena, and the dishes overall were just average. The lasagna in particular was mushy, and the sauces didn't stand out. The secondi were slightly better -- pork ribs, Barolo-braised beef, and a "small chicken" -- but still nothing that justified the higher prices. They do have an underground wine cellar built into a cave, which is interesting to see, but there are other places in Siena with much larger and more impressive cellar spaces. Also worth noting, they add a "10% tax" charge rather than the typical €2 coperto per person. Overall, a rushed and fairly mediocre meal at a higher price point. With so many better places to eat in Siena, this is one I'd skip.

I had this steak two separate times in Italy before trying it here and it was good, but here it was just too chewy. I know they cook these rare but the texture of the meat was just a no go. The minestrone soup actually tasted exactly like a can of Progresso soup -- nothing special, but the texture of the ingredients was good and the veggies looked fresh. The spinach and beans were good, but I actually wish I ordered pasta instead of the steak because watching them bring pasta over to the other tables, I could tell it looked good. And due to really low prices (and big portions) an almost unbeatable value! Lavinia and Elena were perfect hosts and made us feel welcome and almost part of the family. Originally we came at the recommendation by the people at our villa, Il Borghese. But it became a consensus winner when it came to our choice for a repeat restaurant. Just off the main street in San Gimignano on a quiet side road, it tends to be a destination restaurant which draws its customers from recommendations and repeats. It didn't show up in the several published guides we were using, but it is clearly an important omission. Among our favorites were the braised wild boar, the chicken with porcini, wild boar with pici (a thick spaghetti pasta) and, most significantly, the gorgonzola souffle. They also had one of the nicest inexpensive red wines from the local area that we came across: the Il Priore was Euro 16 at the restaurant. We liked it so much we found it at the nearby wine store and took two bottles home with us (Euro 10 per bottle at the store). Certainly in San Gimignano, I would make as my first choice, this lovely restaurant.
