Recently I ordered from the online catalog a small wash vanity, a combination of ceramic basin and base with drawers, to be hung on the wall as a combination. After much head scratching and consulting some wizards, we determined that the basin and base were not designed to go together. The parts could not be combined for hanging on the wall, and the drawers would conflict the the drain plumbing under the basin. Just a complete mismatch. But the whole thing was advertised and pictured as one unit (basin, base with drawers, tap and drain plumbing). I did not order the parts separately, so I am not responsible for the mismatch. After a long phone conversation, the friendly lady agreed, and organized a return pickup, and promised a full refund. The pickup guys were hours late, wasting my whole day, then asking for a 5 star review via sms. The refund I got was about $100 less than what I had paid, and to add insult to injury, I got a $50 invoice for the return pickup. Total loss $150 ($50 I paid for the assembly wizard). I will never again buy anything from IKEA that needs assembly (which is nearly everything). Will only buy from businesses that deliver fully assembled goods, so that I can check them out before letting the delivery guys go. And I will tell this story to anyone who will listen. read more

IKEA has been one of those go to places for your basics. If you just got started living on your own, it's usually your first set up and you've probably used all of your monies on more important things, like a down payment, rent or food. IKEAS is that place you go to get started with furniture that's probably just going to last a few years. You aren't here for quality pieces, just items you can throw together so that your home isn't completely bare. My last visit to IKEA left me surprisingly let down. They manipulate you into walking through all of their pretty showrooms. Like all of the rooms are completely attainable, shopping here will give you a home that looks as decorated as what you just walked through. I went in with a list. In a place like this, it's easy to get lost, so whatever you do, keep yourself focused. I had a few items I came here with intent to purchase, and left empty handed. The mirror selection was not fascinating. I had no need for their bedroom stock or toss pillows. And when it came to the picture frames, confessions time: I found what I was looking for to be cheaper in Kmart. I never try to leave reviews on a sour note, so here you go. I like IKEA stores and products - they have everything; they are well designed; massive range; helpful staff; inexpensive. OK, so some assembly is required - as an engineer, I never met an Allen key I didn't like. There are a few downsides to the Richmond store however (mainly due to its popularity). Parking can be difficult; getting through the check out queues can take as long as picking and finding the items; the car pickup queue can take as long again. Basically, if it is a busy time, expect to be there awhile. Something to watch is that their computer stock system is complete rubbish. The website is only a guide as to what might be physically available; the in-store system is no better; the only way to be sure is to look on the shelf. Given that everything (and I mean - everything) is bar-coded, I do not understand why they don't have better stock tracking. read more

The cafe is on your right as you make it to the top of the stairs (through the shortcut) or just before you head downstair after you have completed your lap of the top floor. Why the cafe? * Free Wifi * 6 recharging points for anything you care to recharge * Cheap food! I mean really cheep! * Good tasting food. Now this is a big call, Melbourne has a lot of great cafes but given the price, this is really quite good food! * Normal sized portions. If you want a big breakfast that is just tooo big to eat, then this is not for you but considering breakfast is just $3, just get two! * Test drive all the Ikea things! All the furniture and utensils are just Ikea so it you like them, go buy them on your way out! I think i have grown out of ikea... i mean it's amazing and all but there comes a certain time in a young person's life where they see the value in better quality furniture (though more expensive). I visited Ikea the other day in search for a study desk. I had shopped around my local area and found something quite likeable at officeworks but they were out of stock. I ventured to Ikea to see what was on offer and in comparison to officeworks was quite expensive and the quality was quite cheap. The table at Officeworks had a glass top and stainless steel legs... the tables at Ikea were cheap pine wood and twice the price... so in this case i went to an Officeworks with stock and purchased my study desk from there. I'm not an Ikea devotee by any stretch, but sometimes it's a necessary evil, and can be interesting experience if you like to see couples squabbling in the aisles and guys fighting over car parks in the docking bays. (Literally, last time I was there two guys 'chested' each other over a spot.) I didn't even realise Ikea did food until recently when I turned up at 9.30am and found the store didn't open until 10am. What to do? Thankfully signs were up everywhere funnelling you into the cafeteria where a $3.50 breakfast was waiting for me. It was about what you'd expect - eggs were at least not sloppy like they usually are out of most bain maries, but they did need about ten sachets of pepper. Nevertheless the Ikea Richmond store is worth a mention because it is the closest one to the city and very easy to get to being in the Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre on surprise surprise Victoria Street. They do have another store in Spring Vale but for most people that would be a trek. As for the store itself, it is set up and features the same levels of affordable furniture that I've seen in different parts of the world. They also have the famous Swedish meatballs, $1 hot dogs and 50c ice cream cones, which are awesome when you get hungry after spending way too many hours here. If I had to criticize Ikea, it would be for the fact that you cannot order anything online and then have it delivered to your house. It says something, not necessarily something bad, that the best option many of us have for furniture is the swedish behemoth Ikea. Sweden is a weird country. Known for most of its history for its vikings and dour protestants (not at the same time), its modern history is stranger. The most important prize in many academic disciplines is the Nobel prize. The eponymous swede was best known in his life for inventing dynamite and every year an ironic peace prize is given in his name. This is a country known equally for volvos and democratic socialism. For Bergman and death metal. It is no surprise then that Ikea, or rather a visit to Ikea, is such a strange event for many of us. At some point during the experience we find ourselves in a post-bauhaus maze. If you are like me, and why should you be, you will enter the maze expectant and hopeful only to find confusion and despair at some point in the heart of the labyrinth when you realise that you are trapped. More marriages have been ruined in this place, but we return for some reason. The reason is surely that there is simply no other one-stop shop for cheapish furniture and home goods. At least not that I have found. There are drawbacks though. The prices are too high. Ikea furniture is not horrible, but it is not very high quality precisely so that it can be uniform and cheap. At these prices, though, it loses its appeal. Further, the delivery costs are very high. Most people drive so that may not be an issue. Overall it says something about the lack of reasonable choices in the market that virtually every flat in Melbourne is done up in Ikea. If you must go, have a stiff drink before hand and approach it like you would a vision quest. You will learn something about yourself in that soulless abyss. This is without a doubt one of the largest Ikea stores I have ever been to and I have to hand it to them... I'm impressed. Reason #1: The store layout is really clever. There's a little footpath with arrows that you follow in a circle that takes you to all the different "rooms" of the house so you can pretty much have a look at everything they have on stock and take your pick. Reason #2: Delicious food! I wasn't expecting that one but the Swedish Meatballs w/ Mashed Potatoes & Gravy was thoroughly satisfying. Reason #3: Cute room displays of sample designs! Reason #4: Convenient location! The prices are pretty moderate, although there are some things that are questionable. However, since it's so mass-produced the quality probably isn't amazing. Contrary to popular belief, it's not all cheap stuff here. Everything has a range which starts from student-affordable to little expensive. Yes, it is still not as expensive as few other stores, we have been to, But on my budget few things were definitely out of question. That said, I love everything that I have bought from here. Plently of choice, plus minimal cost is the formula here, and if you ever find your way out of the store you may just leave with some great purchases. My first visit to IKEA Richmond was not a straightforward one, completely misreading Google Maps and spending twenty confusing minutes walking from North Richmond train station to IKEA - housed within the Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre - rather than simply jumping on one of Victoria Street's omnipresent trams. Granted, the dodgy signposting and seemingly impenetrable nature of said shopping centre can make it feel like trying to break into Fort Knox trying to get into this IKEA but in my case the schlep was worth it. A more human feeling size than IKEA's European sister stores, IKEA Richmond follows the familiar showroom/shop format of this popular Swedish retailer and is refreshingly empty if you visit during the week. That said, don't make the mistake I did and go to IKEA on a Monday to beat the crowds. The last time I did this IKEA had completely sold out of mugs over the weekend and I left empty handed but for one of IKEA's glossy catalogues. Despite its relatively diminutive size, IKEA Richmond also houses one of the company's cult cafes, serving a mixture of Swedish, erm, delicacies such as meatballs alongside French fries and more prosaic café grub. Ikea Richmond is the one stop shop for cheap and good-looking furniture. Located in Richmond, I find this Ikea very accessible with plenty of parking spaces available (if you know where to park). I used to park in the Ikea parking (located behind the store), most of the time its fine- but on weekends it can become a little hectic thanks to cars waiting for loading bay spots. I now chose to park in the victoria gardens shopping center parking. There is ample parking here with no traffic jams in or out on the weekends. The escalator brings you up right into of Ikea too. I really enjoy coming to this Ikea, the store is well organized and furniture is grouped accordingly rather than scattered about with no category. When you enter, the store 'forces' you to follow its one path- this way you get to see everything. The display rooms here are very well designed, making you constantly feel like you need to upgrade kitchens/wardrobes/house. The way the rooms are displayed make the most of the products for sale- as it arranges and places items in a flattering manner, making them seem a lot more workable (buyable) than if it were just sitting on a shelf. Ikea is two levels; the top is like the display level where you get to see everything and pick up and few items. Downstairs is their warehouse where you pick up bigger things such as the furniture. I usually come to Ikea just for their food, it's very cheap and satisfying. When the Swedish meatball cravings come, there's no cure but to drive out to Ikea and feed the beast within. The food hall is in a cafeteria style layout where you enter a line with your tray and pick things along the way. The hot food on offer here is actually quite good, its more than tasty (considering it's no restaurant) and serving sizes are generous. If you've never eaten at Ikea before, I strongly suggest you have the Swedish meatballs with cranberry and mash. Mmmm. read more

Honestly, IKEA is a bit terrifying. This place is just way way way too big and I've gotten infinitely lost every time I've been there. I mean, you always know that you're in for a huge/exhausting day when you make a trip to IKEA. This aside, it's a lot of fun wondering through the display areas and fantasising about your dream kitchen/bedroom/bathroom setups. Sure the stock is pretty generic but it's also clean and simple in true Scandinavian style. And, you just can't beat those prices. Not so simple however is heading down to the warehouse level to figure out exactly what it is that you're buying. Working out with cardboard box is yours is no mean feat. Nothing more relaxing then walking through the aisles of IKEA with the rest of Richmond as I attempt to not trample someone's kids who are running free all over the place. tl;dr I LOVE IKEA SO MUCH. ITS CONCEPT WORKS SO WELL ON ME AND IT JUST MAKES ME LOVE SWEDES EVEN THOUGH I HAVEN'T MET ANY. Okay so the furniture is a bit shit, and people above the age of thirty should probably consider like, not furnishing their house in pure Ikea. But the actual buyable stuff aside, Ikea is just planned so well. They have pencils for you to write things down in, and they're small enough to put in your purse for later and they're *never* blunt. Seriously they must have a full time staff member dedicated to keeping Ikea pencils sharp or something, knowing them they probably do. I love the food section; the quality and the cheapness and the portions balance each other out completely. I know the Ikea cafe section was probably aimed at keeping kids in the family happy (50c cones and refillable soft drinks and $1 hot dogs anyone?) but Ikea also satisfies the needs of poor uni students such as myself. It's hard enough nowadays to find food under $5.00 but here you can get your tummy satisfied AND buy cheap furniture! And get it delivered for $30 in one business day! And it's flat packed and easily installable! But what makes me heart Ikea most is that they've planned for people that lose their sense of direction easily. It's like they've said, "Hey. We know you get lost easily. We know you can't read a map good or work out where north is. That's chill. We got this mega department store shit covered for ya." Solution: There's only one way through the store. Because of this reason, as well as the huge signs everywhere with helpful pointy arrows on them, I never get lost. And if I never get lost, I never get frustrated and I can do my shopping and eat my ice cream in happiness. Also it's close to public transport and there's kind of a whole shopping centre attached to Ikea if you get bored of Ikea, which you most likely won't anyway. Alas, what I wasn't expecting Down Under was the same -- not "essentially," but THE SAME! -- unruly families asunder, consisting of the oblivious and frazzled mum (that's Down Under for "mom"), the self-involved (and sometimes embarrassed) dad on his cellphone (natch), and two de rigueur unruly kids (nearly always boy and girl, of course), running the gamut, pell-mell (sometimes with unattended carts), bumping into people, screaming or crying at the top of their lungs, without an iota of consideration or discipline within arm's reach...!!! Egads!!! My God, this world has become Americanized, even this far in the Southern Hemisphere...!!! We couldn't get out of there fast enough, I tell you...!!! Okay, other than that, IKEA's products, too, can run the gamut from tacky and cheap, to clever, modern and functional. Overall, for the average working-class family, single man or woman, and/or partnerships (gay and lesbian couples love it here, too, on weekends!), prices are relatively reasonable, and one can always find something worth purchasing. Honest Review - PAX wardrobe purchase. Full marks to store (Richmond) displays, sales staff, systems, etc. Able to easily select best option for wardrobe. However, self serve of components was very tricky - finding and then moving 2.4 metre panels on trolley, versus crowded store, plus doors in incorrect section. Result wrong selection of a door, discovered during assembly. Ikea home delivery staff great, very helpful. Truck crew (Kings) next to useless - incompetent as unable to find street address number even though it is 2 feet high at front of building. Lazy, unwilling to carry up 1 flight of stairs, no signature to prove delivery, and just left out door with no advice of finished unloading. Assembly - do-able but tricky, instructions could have more English language included. Return visit to store (Richmond), to arrange change of door. Helpful staff (full marks). ...But, delivery staff (Kings Transport) totally inept. So far have waited over 2 weeks for a door changeover. No calls to book delivery appointment, and they are telling Ikea that they attempted delivery. Guys, you have to give people warning so they can arrange attendance. Don't just turn up!! Plus it seems the Ikea call centre staff have no real power for decisions. Polite, and helpful, but unable to implement a solution. Summary - Easy to buy, not so easy to implement. Save yourself some heartache and look at all alternatives before committing to Ikea. Some more expensive options, are cheaper in long term, when factor in delivery hassles, & assembly.
