I never thought about yelping about a radio station... thanks for the idea Mike O…read more Whenever I'm in Madison, WI, the radio dial will eventually turn to 89.9FM. This is a listener-sponsored community radio station that started back in early 1970's. WORT was voted "Favorite local radio station" in the 2006 "Madison's Favorites" poll conducted by Isthmus (a weekly Madison paper). My godmother and her partner work/volunteer at the station so I've learned a lot about the place over the years and a bit about the inner working of radio show producing. Their News and Public Affairs programming is an eye/ear opening experience. I learn something new every time I tune in. There are programs like In Our Backyard, Queery (for the LGBT community), Access Hour (an ever changing show from members of the community), and my favorite Her Turn (News and information by and about women). For the music lover they have a little of everything. You can start your weekend with Mexican music, classic R&B, vintage jazz & swing, reggae, African, salsa & Latin jazz, rock 'n' roll oldies, hip-hop, medieval & renaissance, women's music, showtunes, world, kids, gospel, electronic, experimental, and avant garde music. The weekday schedule is a bit different but includes classical, folk & international, rock, techno, metal, and blues. Although their coverage area is only about a 50 mile radius of Madison, you can listen on-line so check out their webstream and listen to something new. But please note that all of the people on air are professionals but not necessarily professional DJs. Some of them are plain everyday folks.

I love listening to NPR while I am going to school in the morning. They have amazing programs as well. The music they play varies, but it is always something soothing to the ears. Side note: if you ever drive past the building, it's spectacular and it very interesting!

It seems inbred having the same retired professor types on the air for years offering a little more than just sounding nice. I don't think they've earned their license. I think they should be putting students on the air with some rotation instead of just the old uninspiring tired radio personalities and perpetual guests. I think if they were doing a better job they wouldn't need government funding. Their control freaks they don't announce the topics that guests will be speaking on in advance so callers can prepare and there's some hope of a solid program. Out of state public radio stations like Chuckavardi from Boston are much better. Probably NYC public radio would be better Then this jingoistic Wisconsin garbage.

No classical music as Victor got, but I was able to hear some interesting interviews with folks involved in the Ukraine situation. It was a little distressing and so I won't share the details but I do appreciate public radio for sharing this. We're not in the begging fundraising season so the interruptions were minimal and tasteful. Bills gotta get paid, yo. [Review 17171 overall - 183 in Wisconsin - 688 of 2022.]
