Only excellent things to say about Igor's shop! Called at 8AM and he was friendly / advised I just walk in right away, no appointment needed. When I entered, 2 people were there and BOTH serviced within 25-30min. Came in from out of town and showed Igor a photo of how I get my haircut on the West Coast and he matched my preferences EXACTLY! Excellent haircut in half the time (under 20min). Igor used to rock out over at Neighborhood Barber, and now he's here, with his own shop. I've been coming in here for over a year because: 1. It's conveniently located near the 2nd Ave F Stop. 2. Igor gives me the cut I want. By that I mean a cheap ($14 + tip), reliable haircut. I might not look GREAT when I walk out, but let's be realistic: he's a barber, not a plastic surgeon. Igor does as well as anyone with what he's got to work with. The last time I walked in, I noticed that they have begun stocking Playboy among the magazines, as opposed to just GQ, Details, etc. This was a first. As soon as I sat down and started reading the, uh, articles, this was quickly followed by another first: a woman walked in. With her little son and daughter. She sat down opposite me, and I could literally feel her disgust burning into my forehead as I read the, uh, articles. What? It's a men's magazine. And I'm a man, at least technically. It wasn't like it was a Score. I only read those at Crown Fried Chicken. read more

I'm not sure what to make of this place. This was probably the longest and most meticulous haircut I have ever received, which is good. And when I put product in my hair, I think it works. But without product, my hair doesn't look that good. Maybe its because I got it longer than usual, or perhaps I just need to get used to it... but I'm just not sure. It is cool that they give the old-fashioned shaves, and they will actually do that to your neck instead of using a regular electric shaver. So, for that, and the effort, I think this place is worth trying out again. Oh, and everyone was right about the "no frills." Its a simple barbershop meant for one thing, cutting hair. GET YOUR HAIRCUT HERE! I wanted the whole barber thing to happen, but I kept going to junky places like Franky's Chop Shop or Blind Barber; places that cost like $45 for some dude from Staten Island to cut your hair, while he talks and talks about how he's a DJ, party promoter, or he makes t -shirts. Not only did it get insufferable to listen to these dopes, they never seemed to actually have any training, and the ratio of decent cut to terrible cut was maybe 1 to 4 (like, 20% were decent, 80 were god awful). Even worse, once, I got fed up with one of the guys that cut my hair, changed shops, and HE WAS WORKING AT THE OTHER SHOP. These hackjob hacks just float from 1 fake old-timey joint to the next! So I made a rule: if I walk into a barber shop and see any kind of resident small dog, I walk out. Last time I saw one it was a French Bulldog. It was cute and all... until it puked on the floor. So a gay hipster friend told me that this is a secret gay hipster spot, and after visiting I can explain why. You see, the majority of the guys who work here are Russian/Israeli, and they probably learned how to cut hair in the army. And guess what: that hipster haircut you want to pay $50+ for is basically a standard Eastern European army cut, with some variations. These guys INVENTED that cut! They've perfected it over years and years. On top of that, they're super nice and chill, and you almost never need to wait. The place has a good atmosphere - they seem to be happy to work there, they like each other, and they remember you. They'll talk if you want to talk, they'll be quiet if you don't want to talk. They won't push you out the door. And NONE of them are secretly drum n bass DJs (yes, seriously, drum n bass. I've heard it from the dudes at these faker old timey shops). Plus, they're actually interesting guys, because they're from places like Uzbekistan. And they also all probably know how to kill people with one well placed finger to the neck. Long story short, they're pretty awesome. Plus, you're in New York, why would you want to get your hair cut at a place that looks like it's on a Reality TV show? These guys are CONSISTENT. That 1 to 4 ratio here is 4 to 1 (80% decent or better, 20% fail). I've tried Igor, Gabby and Steve, all great guys, and all good at what they do. I don't even care which one cuts my hair, because they're all awesome. Look, it costs $15, and I generally walk out looking like Bernard Sumner did in 1983. GO HERE read more

Found this place on Yelp, Walked in one day after work. There was no line, and I was greeted by a very nice barber. I forget his name, but I know it was not Igor. Anyways, he was polite, friendly, asked me a lot of questions about my haircut and how I wanted it, took his time and did a very thorough job. He also was the perfect level of chatty and professional. I was very pleased with the experience, and tipped well. The only reason I don't give this place 5 stars is that the haircut hasn't quite grown in the way I like it to, but it wasn'tf or lack of skill or lack of trying on the barber's part. DO NOT GET YOUR HAIRCUT HERE! They will chop your hair off and make you look like a 10 year old boy getting a haircut before Easter Sunday. I work in the beauty industry and I am well versed in describing a haircut, the barber mentioned multiple times, "I don't know what you like", when describing a crew cut the most basic cut. When I asked him to texture the hair so it wasn't so "straight cut' he replied, "I do not know what texture is, do you mean choppy?" NO, I don't mean choppy!! in the south they would call this shop a "Great Clips" (i.e. bad haircut for cheap). I am appalled by the hideous haircut I am wearing currently. Never go here no matter how broke you are, or how desperately you need a cut. SERIOUSLY, if there is a wait at the good place, WAIT, for goodness sake. A little background: I live in East Harlem and I've been dissatisfied with the barbershops nearby, FOR YEARS, dating back from when I stopped rocking a classic Caesar. They're unprofessional, don't know how to blend hair very well, and some just don't know what to do with Caucasian hair. I was originally intending on going to Neighborhood Barber, but then when I heard that Igor used to work there and then opened his own shop, I was impressed. After my first haircut here, I was very satisfied, a feeling I have rarely felt after leaving a barber shop in past years. I went to Igor, although I was tempted to go to the guy next to him because I really liked the haircut he gave the guy in his chair. I showed Igor a picture of Gordon Hayward, and he did a pretty solid job recreating his hairstyle. I LOVE the fade he gave me. He doesn't force conversation, but he's very friendly. My most recent barber before him was an older Russian guy, he was a good guy, but was very reserved. I think charisma is underrated. The other two guys there (Richie and John Doe) looked like they knew what they were doing, but I obviously recommend Igor as of now. He gave a quick, painless, and pleasing haircut. The hot shave was a great touch, even though it doesn't last long, it leaves you with such a smooth feel. Despite my satisfaction, for me at least (18-year-old college freshman), $18 is a bit high. I'm used to paying 12 plus a tip every time. And I tipped more than I ever did with previous barbers, (gave him 22), as I assume the standards for tipping is higher in the East Village. I was assuming my haircut would be 16 so I could just give a 20, but the price has been raised since the last reviews. However, I do know that 18 is nothing compared to a lot of NYC shops. All in all, that is my only complaint as of now. Overall, if I plan on making him my barber for good (which I do), and come all the way down to the East Village for his services (which means a long train ride), that should say something. Erol is the man! After an ill-fated haircut elsewhere, he quickly and professionally was able to make me look human again. These guys are pros and addressed everybody else who was there by name. If that type of loyalty and repeat business isn't the sign of a bunch of satisfied customers, I'm not sure what is. Who knew that you could find a great haircut in Manhattan for under $20?! This is one of those pride and true barber shops that aren't around anymore. I was hesitant at first going here because I thought this would be solely an electric buzzer, give me a number 1 on the sides & a 2 on the top type of place. While you can come here and get that or a clean up no problem, Igor is great with the scissors. Since I moved downtown a year ago it's been tough to find a good barber. Came here today and the place was completely empty so I took a seat right away. The barber really took his time to get my cut right, going over things a few times to make sure it was perfect. Ended up with one of the better hair cuts I've had in a while, and at only 15 bucks it was a steal. Ended up giving just him a 20 because you gotta tip for good service I'll definitely be back again for my next haircut. read more

In Chicago I had my hair cut guy. After 6 years, he always cut my hair perfectly. Moving to NYC was easy, finding a new hair cut guy was stressing. I mean a hair cut is like a 1 month tattoo on the top of your head. I stood outside this place debating, stressing, about whether to go in or not. After watching a couple guys come out with hair that wasn't butchered, I opted to try it out. At $14 it's hard to complain about anything. My hair is medium length and Tim did a good job at keeping the same style, just shorter. Don't expect them to style your hair or give any tips, but if you need your current style, just shorter, this place will do the trick. read more

This place seemed ok until I got home and realized I'd been scratched and chopped to look like a prison inmate. Mike is the worst barber I've ever had in my life. I've been getting 3 on top for years and I think a monkey with no hands could do a better job than him. Good barber shop, but beware: not all employees are the same. I've had my hair cut by Igor and a couple of other guys who are great. But I just had my hair cut by someone who was a terrible listener. I asked them to cut off 1.5 inches and was very specific, showed a photo and everything. He pretended to acknowledge my comment, they immediately started cutting off 3 inches without even a thought. It's like this guy was zoned out in his own little world. When you're describing a haircut to a barber, and all they do is nod their head and say "OK, man" before you've finished your sentences, that is unsatisfactory performance for a barber. When I complained about how much hair he took off, he barely reacted. Then I saw a couple of people on the line of customers behind me look up from their newspapers and get nervous, rightly so. Word of advice: Be careful who cuts your hair. If they seem like they're not listening, they probably aren't. Obviously, $15 for a men's haircut is a good deal, but I'm giving 3 stars because I've had good and, clearly, bad experiences here. read more

SHORT & SWEET: Want a clean look from a professional who takes his time and makes sure that the job is done right? Talk to NICK at IGOR'S! --- FANTASTIC experience at Igor's. I had hair to my shoulders and a week of beard, and I needed a clean look for a job interview the next day. I came in, and Nick was the only one on duty. He asked me what look I wanted, and I only had a vague idea, so I pointed to one of the pictures on the wall. After he trimmed my long hair for a few minutes, he recommended that I go another way, and his advice was perfectly placed. Frankly, I do not know much about haircuts, and I was glad to have some advice from a proper barber. He gave me a clean, professional cut that was exactly what I wanted (even though I had started out with a different idea in mind, based on the pictures on the wall). I have a THICK beard, and SENSITIVE skin. I thought that it would be nice to have a straight razor shave (having never had one before), but, after hearing that my skin was on the sensitive side, Nick started the job with a clipper, and then a Wahl electric shaver to cut my beard VERY low. The Wahl shaver did most of the finer work, and, once we got down to a hot towel soak and using the straight razor, it was clear that, after a few strokes, the straight razor was not right for my combination of sensitive skin and thick hair. It was a blessing that he had known to be so thorough with his electric shavers. In addition to giving me a great cut, Nick made conversation with myself and my friends throughout the process, consulted with me about the look that I wanted at the key points, and paid VERY close attention to detail, both on my head and my face. I will definitely be coming back to Igor's for a haircut from Nick in the future when I want a clean, no-nonsense haircut and shave for a GREAT price. *HE TOOK HIS TIME AND GAVE HIS FULL ATTENTION* at every step of the way, which I truly appreciated, ESPECIALLY given the very reasonable price that I was charged. OK, this is a barber shop and not a salon. Given Igor's skill which I was blessed with this weekend, I wouldn't be surprised if he can do the fancy 'zac effron' layering type of cuts. But I would not risk it here. If you're hair cut is basic: scissor trim, fade, taper, faux, .. go to Igor. Igor gave me the same haircut for 14+tip here in 15 minutes, than the same cut I got at a salon for 45+tip in 1 hour. Only con is that Igor probably has a large clientele base and you may have to wait during busy times, but I think given the bang for the buck its worth it. read more

That being my primary criteria for coming to this place (and Igor's former success at Neighborhood Barbers), my words of wisdom are to be as explicit as possible when giving your haircut instructions. I walked away with one of the most upsetting haircuts of my life. First thing I said when I walked in was "not too short" he then measured out the hair in his hand and asks "to here" I say "yeah that's good" and then I get sheared, past where he measured with his fingers and down to almost nothing. I walked out of this place angry about the month it will take before it grows out. To be fair it probably was just the guy I got, but I wouldn't risk it again.
