This colorful masterpiece was created by Portuguese artist Bordalo Segundo. Here is his quote: "We are destroying the world the habitat of the animals, we are also animals so I think we should think we are also destroying our own habitat." I took a free walking tour with Marcos, who helped create and has been leading the Last Thursday art tours for the last several years. The tour started at 6:30 from the central plaza/park in town, and we wandered around town for a good 2 hours or so. We got to see a bunch of cool art (I bought some neat stickers!), some music, and there were opportunities to buy food. My favorite part was learning about the interesting history and architecture of El Paso. I'm not an architecture buff, but those who are will probably be familiar with architect Henry Trost. He has a ton of neat buildings in El Paso, all very close together. I learned cool facts and trivia about El Paso on the tour that my friend who has lived there for 6 or 7 years doesn't even know! I highly recommend taking Marcos's Last Thursday tour!

This year it's going until the 10th and I we'll be checking it out a couple more times before it's over. My fiance and I went on opening night. It was pretty cold and I didn't come prepared in a heavy enough jacket so we decided to skip the rides, but we did get an idea of everything they had going and I was impressed. Lot's of rides, some trusted goodies like the Zipper and Tirlt-a-Whirl, and some ones that I've only seen in amusement parks (like this one that I can only describe as a spinning Superman). The Ferris Wheel was impressive in size and looked like each seat might actually be able to hold more than two people or maybe two people and a small child. Along with carnival food stands, they also had food trucks on site. Nice. We wanted the carnival food and went with jumbo corndogs, a funnel cake, and a sliced caramel apple (with an uncomfortable amount of caramel... at my request). All exactly how I remember them being as a kid, not good for you, but hard to stop eating. While there, we also caught the cowboy act (didn't catch his name) that was actually pretty good and entertaining even for an adult. We spent a couple of bucks to go inside the "freakshow" tent... probably more entertaining and creepy for a child, but still cool in a novelty kind of way. And they have a giant river rat that seemed like the sweetest thing (my heart is too big because I saw an adorable animal, but in reality he probably would've bit me in a heartbeat). I wasn't so fond of the petting zoo area, but I tend to be anti-petting zoo in general. They did have a large amount of goats though so this would be a great way to introduce your kids to farm animals especially living in a place like El Paso where most don't make it out to a farm. They picked a great location. Really great for any ages. I can't wait to see what they do next year and I hope that the local 4-H branches get in on the fun because the only thing this fair is missing is a little competition. Oh and keep in mind, you need to bring cash. If not, you're going to be searching for an ATM in the area (the one at the country club ran out of cash during the day if that tells you anything).

I had a blast. Rode most of the rides (cliff hanger was my favorite), watched Lady Houdini escape from a straight jacket and a water cell, took a picture with the cutest tea cup pig, and petted a bunch of sad looking goats in the petting zoo. Biggest complaints: 1- guided by reflective vested workers, had to park a mile away. Finally got to the gates, there was a parking lot only about a quarter filled for seemingly no reason. But, oh well. A bit of walking doesn't kill me. 2- dirt, dirt, dirt. I wore sandals. My feet were scary dirty by the time I left. But, oh well. This is El Paso, should've expected it. 3- price. $5 park entrance fee. $5-10 Fair entrance fee. Ticket/wristband prices inside the gates. Plus food/drink/activity costs. But, oh well. I knew going in, this was a money trap. 4- upon leaving, it felt like walking out of the fair and into some strange mixture of a car show/barrio/street party. It was a bit uncomfortable walking back to the car. Especially when an inebriated young man stumbled/ran right across my path, drink in hand, to relieve himself just a few feet away. Classy. No "but, oh well"s this time.

I don't even know where to start this review... simply put, this is one of the most fun 5Ks I've…read moreever done! Unlike most people, I don't carbo-load or even train before 5Ks so on the day of the race I'm usually just praying that I don't pass out half way through. This is the joy of a fun 5K! There are some fun runs where you feel compelled to run the entire time, but with giant bounce house obstacles every 400-800 meters, just about everyone walks at one point or another. The very first obstacle is the start line. You have to quickly climb up to the top because there is a fear of being trampled (I kid, I kid... there's honestly no rushing getting up this obstacle). On the other side you slide down, but the material isn't as slide-y as the large slides. I think that had something to do with the fact that most people throw themselves off this obstacle so it counter balances their momentum and makes it more of a bounce instead of a fall-to-your-death. I kind of twisted my ankle hopping off of this one because I didn't realize that the drop is about two feet to the bottom. I was still able to continue to run though. The next obstacle was a mattress something or other which is kind of similar to what you see football players do with old tires. Think high knees! I struggled on this one, but it seemed like a lot of people did. Even if you fall, it's still a lot of fun and you won't get hurt at all. After that I was basically counting down the obstacles left because I was getting hella tired (and that was only about 400 meters in). Everything else is a blur to me... but what I can tell you is there were a lot of giant balls being thrown at my head, climbing inflatable stairs, and throwing my body over inflatable tubes. The volunteers along the way were super motivating and cheered on all the runners along the way. With the mix of obstacles and the Insane Inflatable cheerleaders those 3.1 miles went faster then I imagined. I only have two gripes with the entire race and they're small ones. 1. There's a long wait at the 6 story slide finish line. They may need to add a couple of harder obstacles toward the end to help separate people because we caught up to the wave before us. And 2. I wasn't in love with the vendors available. It was actually kind of slim pickings. They could've had a lot more food trucks on hand. I did see the Craze food truck so major points for that. I loved the race! And they had medals at the finish line - participation medals, but medals none the less. I really can't wait until next year! It was tons of fun and I know they'll be adding new obstacles!

However, big, inflatable obstacles sounded super fun, so I figured "Why not?" Glad I did. The obstacles were extremely fun, and just enough to challenge me without killing me! Athletes of all levels and ages were represented and all seemed to have plenty of fun! My time slot was 0900, glad I didn't put it off any later, because the groups got bigger and bigger. Overall I ended up being the first female to finish from my time slot and 6th overall! I had a great time and I'll definitely be on the lookout for the next time it comes to town!

Steve is a United Airlines pilot who works most of the week, but on the weekends (Friday - Sunday), he likes to fly his open cockpit biplane. he has over 25 years of experience so you're in very capable hands and he is super nice. What is an open cockpit biplane? It is exactly what you think it is...it is open so you feel the wind in your face and your hair and it fits 2 people. You get to sit in front and yes, you get to wear a helmet with goggles like in WWI. Don't worry about keeping your hair in place, the helmet will do that for you. It can be a little difficult to find the hanger at first, but his hanger number is 8000-6 but if you don't see it, you'll definitely "Tillie" the plane. She is a beautiful bright orange and yellow. You can tell that she is Steve's pride and joy because she looks brand new and everything is very clean. The highlight of this adventure definitely has to be when he lets you fly the plane over Mesa Street area. I did a 360 turn and what an adrenaline trip. It felt like being on a gentle roller coaster ride. I loved every minute of it! Then he took over and did a few tricks where you get to experience what 2G force feels like. Best ride ever. For $195, you get a full 45 minutes in the sky which is a long time. He even offers a DVD of your experience for $15 which captures your expressions. I didn't get this addition but I was sorely tempted to. I brought my camera with me instead and got a ton of great pictures from over 6000 feet in the air.

What a unique taco experience i had tonight! Never have i ever had a flavor infused corn tortilla…read morefor tacos until this magician of a chef made it happen! So first of all, this guy makes, presses, and cooks his own tortillas right in front of you. The ones he served at the Rubiks Yelp event was Wild Cherry flavored tortillas! He also had the choice of either lemon pepper catfish, steak, or a chorizo pork option i believe. The steaks he topped off with some kind of corn and black bean salsa which was superb! And he also had a sauce he topped them all off with. I cant remember the name but i settled for magic sauce lol. It was overall a magical experience of a taco! He will never serve the same tortilla neither. He has experimented with blue gatorade, cilantro, chile lime, strawberry, mango, skies the limit! So the only downside was naturally the wait for such magnificeny tacos. They are considerably small tacos, thus i would still be hungry after the 2 tacos i ate in a matter or seconds but waited close to 10 mins or so. Which was ok except that i was really hungry. They were also $2 a taco which was rather pricey for a small taco. But the fresh, unique, and high quality of the taco overall can justify it for the most part. Still, i wish i left feeling more satisfied and full. All in all though, great experience. The chef has a great personality which reflects through his work and craftmanship of his food. Defonitely worth trying again next time we visit Rubiks!
