From 10th November to 24th February Newcastle's Time Square is transformed with the addition of a fantastic ice skating rink. There's no better way to get you into the Christmas spirit than open air ice skating. This lovely little rink provides great fun for people of all ages. The rink looks best in the evenings when it glows with festive lights. If you aren't the most energetic person or find the prospect of gliding on ice too daunting there is a cafe bar attached to the rink. You can relax with a hot chocolate and laugh at the unfortunate people who, like me, have no skill at skating whatsoever and refuse to let go of the sides! It costs £5.95 for adults and £4.95 for children during public sessions but it is also possible to hire the rink for parties. Skating @ Life is open 10am till 6pm Monday to Saturday and 11am till 6pm on Sundays. However, it is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. read more

Times Square is a large open space in front of the Centre of Life and the nightclubs Digital and The Other Rooms. It is a small walk from the Metro stop at Central Station. Every winter Times Square is transformed into an ice rink with a small seating area and café attached. The rink has friendly and helpful staff and is open to anyone from people who have never skated before to experts. The prices are quite cheap and is much easier to get to than the ice skating alternative at the Whitley Bay Arena. Always a fun time for the family at Christmas. read more

great ice rink. fun for both adults and kids and won't break the bank at the same time. the ice can be a little slippy as it is obviously temporary ice but its still a really great activity to do at christmas time! while at the ice rink why not take a peek inside the life centre which is a really hands on museum for kids and has lots of interactive activities to take part in. their cafe is a nice place to relax after running around the museum all day. grab a sandwich and a coffee to re fuel before you head off home. read more
