This is a Chinese Pure Land temple. Their main practice is reciting the name of Amitabha Buddha…read more(the Buddha of Infinite Light and Eternal Life) and taking refuge in him in order to enter the Western Pure Land at death, a place of liberation and eventual full realization of our Buddha Nature. The building is a converted office building. They have a spacious recitation hall on the second floor. The first floor has a library, bookstore, and dining room. If you go on a Sunday morning, don't expect to be a casual observer. They'll give you a black robe, lead you to a meditation cushion, and expect you to participate in the chanting. You'll probably be the only non-Chinese, but everyone is very nice and friendly, very helpful, and very devout!. They'll even feed you lunch (vegetarian food) for free. They don't ask for donations and offer you books and CD's in addition. It was a cool and refreshing experience. The prostrations (full bows) were the hardest part--kept tripping on the robe! It helps to know something about this form of Buddhism, but it's not a requirement. You'll learn by doing!

After the lesson, a vegetarian lunch is provided free of charge (which was very good). While eating lunch, you have an opportunity to mingle with others who visit the temple. I found everyone to be very pleasant and open to answ ering any questions that I had. In addition to the temple, there is also a very nicely stocked library which is divided into two sections. The one section offers a variety of books, CD's, DVD's, and other print material to anyone who wishes to learn free of charge. The other section provides a variety of material that can be checked out and then returned. Donations are accepted, but they are not required (they are tax deductible if made however). No one at the temple solicited anything from me besides my willingness to learn and to participate in the discussions and other activities. Overall I was very happy with my experience at the temple, the people, and I plan on returning next weekend. I would definitely recommend this temple to anyone who wishes to learn about Buddhism.

I was the only beginner that day so I received one-on-one instruction from the center's director, Megan. She explained the center to me and the basic ideas of the Shambhala teachings. Obviously, there is way more to it than can be taught in one lesson, but she did a good job giving me an overview. Next, she explained meditation covering everything from how to sit, posture, where to look, etc. We then meditated for approximately 12 minutes or so. Afterwards, we discussed how I felt and any questions I had. Then we did a few minutes of walking meditation followed by more discussion. Finally, we did another 12 minutes or so of seated meditation. I appreciated the input and instruction. Afterwards, I spoke again with some of the people who were not beginners and had been in another room practicing their regular Sunday meditation. A couple of the women gave me some more tips and explained why meditation is helpful in their lives. It was a very interesting experience and I think I will go back again. If you go, be warned that the center is somewhat difficult to find. It is located in a business park and looks like offices until you get inside. It seems like a weird location, but being tucked in the back of the parking lot allows for it to be quiet.

They provide thoughtful instruction that is beginner friendly to someone newly learning about Buddhism, like myself. The meditation and talks about important life topics have truly helped me approach life differently and avoid anxiety and stress more often. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a meditation group or looking to learn more about Buddhism.
