The people here were extremely nice and welcoming. They showed me how to go up to light incense and raise it up before placing it on the alter. They had live music and many table of food. The Chua Dai Bi temple, which is located next to a church in a residential area, is gorgeous on the…read moreinside and outside. It has a team of volunteers cleaning and decorating the temple, which seems to be new, and a couple of monks living on site. Everyone is very generous and kind with the utmost patience and passion, especially when teaching Buddha's lessons and praying. There is the rule of removing your shoes upon entering the temple as well as respectful behavior (no shouting or running, and appropriate attire only), both of which are common courtesies. Also, the monks can speak English, so to all of the curious non-Vietnamese speakers, please feel free to explore the temple and religion.

I went to Dallas Shambhala Meditation Center for the beginner class on the last Sunday of the…read moremonth. Everyone I met while waiting for the class to begin was very friendly and welcoming. I was the only beginner that day so I received one-on-one instruction from the center's director, Megan. She explained the center to me and the basic ideas of the Shambhala teachings. Obviously, there is way more to it than can be taught in one lesson, but she did a good job giving me an overview. Next, she explained meditation covering everything from how to sit, posture, where to look, etc. We then meditated for approximately 12 minutes or so. Afterwards, we discussed how I felt and any questions I had. Then we did a few minutes of walking meditation followed by more discussion. Finally, we did another 12 minutes or so of seated meditation. I appreciated the input and instruction. Afterwards, I spoke again with some of the people who were not beginners and had been in another room practicing their regular Sunday meditation. A couple of the women gave me some more tips and explained why meditation is helpful in their lives. It was a very interesting experience and I think I will go back again. If you go, be warned that the center is somewhat difficult to find. It is located in a business park and looks like offices until you get inside. It seems like a weird location, but being tucked in the back of the parking lot allows for it to be quiet.

The Thuong Hanh Buddhist Monestary/The Inner Peace Garden was exactly how I thought it would be -…read morepeaceful & enlightening with kind people that answered my questions & allowed me to meditate in their monastery. It is an intimate setting. There are fountains, encouraging words/signs, a small encircled space to walk and a sacred area which requires the removal of shoes on the outside grounds. Also, there is a gift shop. You can go inside the monastery to meditate. You are allowed to take pictures of the inside, but I did not. Cushions are available if you'd like to sit more comfortably. The ladies there lowered the lights for me and told me to take my time. They have a Friday evening mediation session in English and anyone is welcome to attend. I've never been to a monastery before and I don't practice Buddhism, but I appreciated their openness and kindness.
