Took my Little Sister (Big Brother, Big Sister) to see The Best Birthday Party Ever and really enjoyed the show with talented keiki on stage. Great acting, musical score, sets, and lighting and the seats were comfy too. Nice to find a show that my 11 year old could relate to, and well acted by all involved. Hurrah! First time at the Iao Theatre and won't be our last. Easy parking with first 2 hours free for Kamaaina at the parking building opposite. Go, enjoy a local show! read more

We attended the live Rocky Horror Show this week at the historic Iao Theater. Rocky has been going on all month, but we decided to attend on Halloween and we're glad we did. Everyone in the audience was in costume, so it was even more entertaining. It was also starring the legendary Eric Gilliom and it was his last performance as Frank 'N' Furter. The entire cast was excellent. We have enjoyed many terrific shows at Iao Theater and marveled at the number of talented people on Maui. Unbelievable to think that this building with such a rich history was considered unnecessary and had to be put on the National Registry of Historic Places in order to protect it. The restoration work that has been done is certainly admirable. Many thanks to the owners, employees, volunteers and talented entertainers who keep the Iao Theater going. read more

Moving from California, we knew were going to miss our grand stages and performing arts theaters. Luckily for us, this location makes up for that which we miss! We come to attend multiple shows throughout the year and enjoy every minute of it! They usually sell some snacks in the cafe downstairs. It's quaint, quirky, and is very spacious for such an old theater. Once the giant parking structure opens, parking will be easy, but for now, you can grab the Da Busy Bee shuttles that are free. This is a fantastic theater and we are so lucky to have it. I have seen a range of plays musical concerts, children's theater. I've even been to Christian services here I recently just saw the Rocky horror picture show and the show was great and the facility was also great. Parking can be a little challenging but really, it's not unbearable. read more

Made my return to seeing live theater this weekend with a brilliant and hilarious performance of Clue! at the Iao Theater. This was the returning performance after an almost 20 months break! Such a pleasure to finally be out and laughing again, enjoying the arts with my community. The newest rules inside and outside due to the pandemic were efficiently explained and carried out in a very calm and polite way by the lovely and helpful staff. If you get a chance to attend any of the many varied community shows at the Historic Iao theater don't miss the chance. They have a great sound and light system. Seats aren't the most comfortable but don't let that keep you from enjoying the wonderful talent that is showcased here. Once a month they offer ONO(one night only shows for free) we have gone to many of these in last 10 years & have never been disappointed. Main street has quite a few small interesting shops so I'd recommend to go early & walk around & enjoy them before the show. read more

It's been a really long time since I attended an event at the old Iao Theatre and should go there more often. What a lovely blast from the past. We attended a special event called RAM's Got Talent which was sort of a variety show featuring local realtors and other industry types. This year it was the highlights from previous years, so you know it had to be a good show. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the entertainment. I think everybody was having a good time and it's especially nice when you know a lot of the people on stage and in the audience. Final performance of Spam-a-lot. Great show, talent, sets and music. Lots of effort was evidently invested in the show from producing, rehearsals to directing and talent. I have never been inside this theater until a few days ago. We went to watch a pre-broadcast SYFY channel's Haunted Collector which filmed a segment inside Iao Theater. It's a pretty nice place for its age. All the seats seem to have a great view of the stage. It's not a huge theater so you get an intimate feeling. If there was a show or play that interested me, I'd go back! read more

I've been to this theater a couple of times since moving to Maui. It's like a piece of history, and rightfully so, shows its age in a graceful way. I love that they are keeping this theater up and running, and bring live theater to the island. Every seat in the house is a good seat, since the theater is more intimate, so don't be discouraged if only the back rows are open. They have a little snack table that has a the essentials to enjoy a show, like coffee, soda, popcorn and candy. The prices were surprisingly reasonable. Review 290:Tiny theater in Wailuku on this street with tons of cute shops. Unfortunately on a Sunday most of them were closed. We ended up going to the 3pm show and they let us in at 2:30. They even had a huge crown we could take photo ops next to. As you walk in they help you find your seats. There really are no bad seats. Fortunately we were right in front, on the phone when I ordered, I made sure ask for two next to each other. We saw Spamalot; the Nights that say NÉE..being a huge Monty Python fan..nothing could be more logical! Lol! We had a 15 intermission where we got sodas, coffee and these delicious Maui macaroons. The show was awesome! Even a guy won a can of Spam at the end lol!I'd definitely go again and trying to get dad to see it with me before it ends. read more

I can't even count how many performances I've seen here. For a small company there's a lot of talent. The inside of the Iao Theater is much bigger than I originally imagined and well kept. Even my husband (who didn't grow up around the theater) enjoys coming to the shows and making a date night out of the evening. Keep an eye out for matinee showtimes (usually opening week), you can save a couple of dollars. read more

Went to see Maui On Stage's brilliant joyful production of Mary Poppins at Iao Theater. I highly recommend seeing this! For me, the Most touching moment was with Francis Taua and Chris Kepler 'A Man has Dreams'.. precious! Laugh and cry and feel the joy of Broadway- right here on Maui! Wow! Even small-town Wailuku has a beautiful theater. The Iao theater is the home of the Maui OnStage production company. I went here to see the production of on Golden Pond last Friday. The play was about coming to terms with aging and although it was a little slow, I could still appreciate the quality of the actors and set design--which was fantastic! The theater itself is this beautiful structure, well maintained, and kind of reminds me of the Daughters of american Revolution (DAR) constitution hall in DC. They also have a concession stand which sells some Maui based products...like yummy Macaroons and mac nut cookies! If you're spending a lot of time in Maui (like me) and looking for something to do, checking out their productions is definitely worth while. There's some cute restaurants close by so you can make it a dinner/night at theater combo. read more

We saw Singing in the Rain today at the 3:00 Sunday matinee. It was great! Good job to everyone involved. Well staged, well sung, and well acted. So much energy in the room, an enthusiastic packed house. We usually come to Maui in February and are here for the first time in the summer. A family member suggested that we check out live theatre at the historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. I highly recommend it. It was great and such a nice change of pace from our normal path of life. Maui On-stage has always delivered when it comes to performances. I most recently saw La Cage A Folle and loved it. Great actors, great voices, no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Live theatre on Maui: real, well-done, and lovingly preserved. Well worth seeing It was in the Iao Theatre, built sometime in the twenties. All volunteer actors and staff, trying to keep this historic little gem of a theatre in wailuku open. Not so much grand scrolls and design as lovely architecture and woodwork in this wooden building in Wailuku. Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, many other famous people played there during WWII. It holds maybe a thousand spectators, perhaps less. And the playbills and old pix of when it was built, it's really quite a thing to see. They did "On Golden Pond", and were quite good with it. It's a much more hopeful ending than in the movie, and a beautiful tribute to a long-married couple. We follow their summer in their cabin in the Maine woods, and watch them make discoveries about each other; then watch their daughter make discoveries about herself and them. Ultimately this play is about relationships and growing as a person. The all-volunteer cast played their part so well you felt like you were their friends watching them through this summer. We see Norman emerge from his lethargy as he responds to young Billy. Then Ethel reminisces about her summers in the girls' camp and worries about the future of Golden Pond now the land where the camp was is being developed. We are aware that she is, perhaps for the first time, becoming conscious of her own mortality. The scene is poignant but not overdone, and we three almost seventy-year-olds in the audience resonated with that discovery. read more
