I travel a fair amount for work and, during those trips, typically stay at the major flags, such as Hilton, Marriott, and Starwood brands. So, I'd like to think I have a good frame of reference going into this review. Bottom line: For the price, the Hyatt Place should be a solid deal; however, some critical, unforgivable flaws during my visit don't allow me to give it more than two stars.
To begin with, the Hyatt Place - not to be confused with the Grand Hyatt (which I hear is nice) - is a tad off the beaten path. By cab, yes, you can get to hot spots relatively quickly (traffic and construction permitting); however, the immediate walkable vicinity of the hotel is not a hotbed of activity or nightlife.
The building itself seems new and is nicely manicured and maintained. It gets high marks for cleanliness and the suite I was staying in - with a living room, bedroom, two bathrooms, and a kitchen - was absolutely massive, almost overly so. High ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows further enhance the feeling of spaciousness. The furnishings were not terribly chic but the bed was large and comfortable. Also, as alluded to above, the cleaning crew did it a solid job day in and day out. Unfortunately, that's where the positive points end.
The crushing blow to my stay was the shower which, for five days straight (in the middle of zero-degree Celsius weather in Santiago) would not produce hot water. On a couple of days, it produced - at best - barely lukewarm water, which felt plain cold anyway due to the chilly weather outside. I notified the front desk of the matter immediately and they said they would look into it. The next morning, however, to my dismay, the water was still cold. And it remained that way for the remainder of my stay. It's worth noting that a work colleague, who was staying there as well, was having the exact same problem. This is simply unacceptable for any hotel, much less a Hyatt. This factor alone pushes my stay to two stars, and I considered only one. I simply can't understand how or why they couldn't resolve it. Ironically, I'm not even a scalding hot shower guy...
Another negative point is the hotel's cafe/restaurant on the 12th floor: Both the food and the quality of service were horrendous. If you stay here, I highly recommend not eating in the hotel. The breakfast buffet - with the exception of the fresh fruit and juices, I suppose - is terrible. Do not eat the eggs or the bacon! I also tried some empanadas off of their lunch menu and they rivaled the breakfast for one of the worst things I've eaten recently. On top of this, the service staff is bewilderingly unfamiliar with their own menu and move at a snail's pace, if they are around at all (which was not often the case). A simple order of smoked salmon with cream cheese and arugula took over half of an hour, only to appear with corn chips, instead of the toasted bread I requested. Fortunately, there is no shortage of outstanding restaurants in Santiago, so just make sure you dine elsewhere.
In short, for the price, the Hyatt Place could and should be a good value-based lodging option in Santiago but, in my case, the cold shower and terrible dining experience(s) don't allow me to assign more than two stars. If you decide to stay there, be sure to check your shower's water temperature the moment you check in. Also, find some better places to eat on Yelp! read more
