So my Chinese craving week continues before endless eating turkey feast begins! Hooray!! I had a doctors appointment in Dubuque, Iowa. I had to stop at Hy-Vee on Locust for a last minute Thanksgiving list. And first things first, it was lunch time so we went to Chinese deli & had a variety of foods to chose from but we again chose Chinese, and our choices were black, pepper chicken, twice cooked pork & the sides came with plain lo mein, plain fried rice, crab Rangoon, and eggrolls. But then I went ahead and bought two BBQ pork steamed buns because they are the best. I usually make it myself but since they were there why not treat myself. And all that was scrumptious, and everything was only $23.53. You can't beat that. Hy-Vee had a special buy a ham @ $5.99 per lb and get a free turkey, so it was a good deal! I saw Starbucks at a glance & before exiting the store I had to try the venti peppermint mocha! It's okay & good but I will stick with my ultimate favorite which is venti ice vanilla latte with whip cream hot or cold!! So I suggested my BF and I divide and conquer, while he stood in line at the checkout and I stood in line for my drink this way we can be done and head home! However I was not happy about one thing, it wouldn't be a big deal but since we're out of town it kind of was! Time was limited and we were on a mission. The aluminum roasting pan was mishandled either by the cashier or the bagger but when we got home my BF noticed a nickel sized hole at the bottom of pan. He did mention something to me in the car that he didn't like how the pan was handled during check out but at the time I thought it's not a big deal. But now that we're home I know what he was referring to. I didn't get it before! And for an aluminum pan it wasn't cheap either!! If I was at checkout & not in line at Starbucks we wouldn't be home with a hole at the bottom of our aluminum pan is all I'm saying! This man needs to speak up and not after the fact!! Oh well, I head that way a lot so I will stop by for a refund as a Starbucks coffee or for a lottery ticket lol!!! Just a little side humor!! A slight hiccup but going forward never leave your man at checkout alone! Lo!! I was able to redeem my scratch ticket for $36 and bought more. Overall this was a really one stop shop for all... Recommended but be mindful if you're local or especially out of town, to double check your groceries or items for damaged or forgotten items before leaving the parking lot. 1st time review for this store as part of a Yelp elite squad! Very nice staff cant deny it, but I ordered a venti iced pumpkin cream chai and there was no pumpkin in the chai or cold foam itself. The chai also tasted watered down. I'm usually not the type to write yelp reviews but I also work at a Starbucks in dubuque at a different location. I've made plenty of pumpkin cream chais and this one was abnormal. If you're paying $7.01 for coffee the least you'd expect is for it to be up to standards. Other than that it seemed like a great environment no shame to any of the employees. read more

I stopped here to get some items for my hotel room and it was close to my hotel. I have never been to one but they are getting closer and closer to where I live. I was excited to see what they were all about and explore the store. For the most part it's like any other grocery store until you lay your eyes on the fresh meat and seafood section which is spectacular to say the least. It goes on and on down the whole back of the store. Anything you can think of is in it including lots of fresh sausages, pre made items for you to cook at home. I seriously hope Milwaukee finally gets one even though Milwaukee is top heave with grocery stores already. I will post some pictures of the fresh meat case so you can see what I mean. read more

Outside they grill burgers, brats etc fir lunch and dinner. The staff was amazingly friendly! I had Chinese food and it was the worst. The rice and entrees were cold. Very little flavor to the chicken and vegetables. The chicken tasted like it had been reheated a few times. I keep trying to like this store as they seem to have a very pleasant staff but last Sunday will be my last visit. I tried to buy sweet corn and almost every ear that i pulled back the husk on, i found a live worm. Actually upon further inspection, there were several worms in plain view on top of the display. I pointed this out to a very nice young lady in the produce department. She said she would tell her manager. I then purchased 2 cantelopes. I tried to eat them yesterday and they were already rotten. Their produce department is the worst i have ever seen. We purchased 3 ribeyes in the meat department at 13.95 each. I took those off the grill tonight and they had so much fat on them, they were almost too fatty to eat. I hate to say this, but you can buy much better meat and produce for a whole lot less at Walmart. The staff at Walmart is not on par with Hyvee staff, but at some point, you have to eat, snd when you get home after a $100 + visit and most of what you brought home was not fit to eat...enough already! This is one of those bad news/good news reviews. First, a note of explanation. I'm addicted to a confectionary delight out of Missouri known as Cherry Mash. I never saw it east of Council Bluffs, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it at the Hy-Vee in Cedar Falls. It was serendipity as I was looking for something else that day. Dubuque is my portal between the galaxies of Wisconsin and Iowa, and this Hy-Vee is an oasis (of sorts) where I can pick up needed refreshments and supplies for my journey. On a recent trip, because I had found my addiction in Cedar Falls, I figured that Hy-Vee must be a good place to score a fix of Cherry Mash. The bad news? No Cherry Mash here. The good news? An assistant manager bent over backwards to find out the story - Cherry Mash is not an inventoried item in Dubuque, however, he offered to order it for me! Of course, I don't live in Dubuque, so a special order is an exercise in futility. Still, it was a kind offer from a store that emphasizes customer service. I must say, I have never been in a Hy-Vee store that was anything less than clean, well stocked, and staffed with friendly, courteous and cheerful associates. My parents live in Southern Wisconsin so Dubuque is a nice halfway point when traveling to and from. My husband and I like to stop at HyVee since it offers clean bathrooms and several ready-made food options. But the last two stops here have been disappointing since there haven't been any vegetarian options. I looked through the cold sandwiches, asian hot bar, and pizza bar, but not a single non-meat option was available. When I asked the staff if there was another option I was missing, they acted as though I have some bizarre disease that I might die from. We had a question about getting some meat items shipped to Colorado, and not only did the customer service person help us, she introduced us to one of the meat department employees who assisted getting done what needed to. Just very upset. Today the meat counter guy over charged me for ground beef because he weighed it then dropped some on the scale and didn't replace the meat he dropped, just wrapped it up. Then I asked for 4 brats, he charged me for 5. I asked if there were actually 5 in the package because I only asked for 4 and he said yes there were 5. I get home and there are 4. Then all my packages almost fell open from being poorly wrapped, and he took about 3 times the amount of time it should take to wrap each package so I thought he was being really careful...nope just super slow and bad at it. He did such a great job from ordering the best quantity, coordinating set up and pick up and everything in between. Tyler went above and beyond to make the whole meal flawless. Everyone raved about the food and the professionalism of Tyler. I wish there was a Hy-Vee and especially a Tyler the catering manager near me in Chicago. Brand spanking new and pristine! I wandered in here on a road trip and hit the salad bar. Not nearly as expansive as a Whole Foods hot bar but impressive nonetheless. I assembled a quick salad and perused the impressive array of bulk bin offerings before hearing an announcement over the speaker that I simply could not believe: We have two cases of Bourbon County Barrel Aged Stout available today, a two-bottle limit per person. Stop by the liquor section now! Wut? I had just roused myself at 5 a.m. that very morning to wait in line at Binny's for the privilege of buying these very bottles. They didn't have bombers, but I did get two bottles of Barley Wine varients for $6.29 a bottle. That's a competitive price and no line needed. The liquor section manager also couldn't be nicer and more helpful. Win-win all around. read more

I've been to this grocery store a couple of times because it is seriously close to my house. It seems to have a better selection of foods than the grocery part of Walmart. The produce is fresher and more varied. It's also a little more expensive. However, the service is great. Everyone is so friendly and they actually open new lanes when the notice a long checkout line. They staff is also really willing to help you look for things you can't find. Overall, I really like this grocery store... I think maybe it's comparable to a harris teeter but with better customer service. I'd give them 5 stars if they doubled or tripled coupons... read more

Very sad. This store had a full service Market Grille restaurant until very recently. I'm so sorry they stopped full service. It was my favorite place in the tristate area. I rarely find a restaurant that cooks better than me at home but this place did. It was my comfort place to eat -- good food that I didn't have to cook or clean up, and the nicest staff. read more

I am at a loss. I truly don't want to change grocery stores but the HyVee on Locust St in Dubuque just keeps sliding down a slippery slope... to what? To turning into a Walmart? In the last few months they have stopped carrying Del Monte vegetables, McCormick spices, small sizes of several products that older people and singles need, Country Harvest bread AND they have let their produce fall to the category of needing to be fed to farm animals! Was having a huge party and would have liked pre chopped cabbage. No less than three of us (customers) were looking for some. Two. Count 'em, TWO people went to look and didn't come back. Bought a whole cabbage and it was so trimmed back and limp it couldn't be brought back even soaking it in ice water. Garbage! Same shopping trip. There was only one jar of Miracle Whip left which I had to get on my hands and knees (I'm 65 with a bad foot) to dig out from the very back of the bottom shelf. Did I say "BIG Party." Needed three jars. Asked a person with a HyVee shirt and he was huffy because he was talking to other people, even though I waited for a pause in the conversation. He sent a kid who had to ask two other people if they were the ones looking and finally found me and THEN he went looking in the back, again on this same shopping trip from a nightmare, and didn't return. I would like to file a complaint at this store. On the Job Application I applied for Cashier and Courtesy Clerk, not knowing what each of the jobs consist of doing. Because it wasn't listed on the Application form. But, the main problem here is they did not hire me because I was not able to do ONE task out of everything. (Because I had neck surgery so I have 6 bolts, 2 titanium rods and part of my hip bone all in my neck). And if I would be outside in the cold for very long. It would screw up my neck and possibly have me paralyzed from my neck down. I need some other people's advice about this. read more

I used hy-vee bakery for desserts for my wedding and originally was suppose to have them cater food too, also thought about using hy-vee floral for my flowers as well. the person I talked to about flowers was originally nice enough, but took somewhere around 4-5 months to email me the quote for flowers. When i would call/email to ask about when I would get my quote she would seem annoyed on the phone that I was calling again. Went somewhere else even though it cost me a little more money. catering - they had good prices, really good food, and the first catering manager we talked to was absolutely lovely. I booked with them for my wedding and was told the prices would be going up at some point in the future, but since I booked before they went up I would be locked into the original pricing. fast forward like 8 months and now there is a new catering manager who upon meeting is standoffish, rude, and seemed like she would rather be anywhere other then talking to me about food for my wedding. upon taste testing food she was basically throwing the plates on the table in front of my mom and I and in a mad sounding voice informing us what each plate was. At one point we even asked her if everything was ok. She also then informs me that I'm not locked into the original pricing and will now need to pay a lot more money than original planned. needless to say, I cancelled with them and picked another catering company. The desserts for my wedding were the gourmet cupcakes that were delicious and a huge hit, as well as a small cake for my husband and I. The manager of the department was very friendly and helpful and I enjoyed working with her. With that being said, pretty much everyone else I talked to again seemed annoyed to be bothered with questions, and no one was every on the same page as if things weren't being written down or kept on file. When I called a week before my wedding to make sure everything was good to go, what should have been a quick phone call ended up taking 25 minutes because the girl I spoke with didn't have the right cupcake count, didn't know how many of each kind we wanted, claimed I hadn't actually paid for everything (when I had receipts to prove it), didn't want to give me enough boxes for leftover cupcakes, wanted to know what time they were suppose to be delivered, even though they already give me a delivery time (and she kept trying to get me to change it as if there was something wrong with the original one they already gave me), and was asking me about when I would be bringing in the flowers to put on top of the cake; which I had continually told everyone multiple times in emails and on the phone that I would not be putting real flowers on the cake, I wanted icing or fondant flowers on the cake, but for some reason that seemed to annoy most people there and like it was too much trouble for cake decorators to do even though it was an extremely simple cake design on a small 6" cake. Overall the cake and cupcakes were delicious, and the cake turned out beautiful, and the manager of the department was wonderful. I'm glad that I will never have to worry about coming to this Hy-vee again. It was very clear that most of the people that I talked to/worked with were trying their hardest to not try their hardest. I just got married at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa. I live in the city of Chicago and I was surprised how hard it was to find bakery, florist, etc., especially one that met my city standards. Don't mean to sound snotty, but that's how it is, we have high expectations because there simply is the best of everything down here. After a few cake tastings and my inability to plan remotely, we decided to use Hy-Vee for our cake, flowers, and catering for our pre-wedding party and Saturday late-night party. Impressed is an understatement. The staff, led by Liza, was helpful, attentive, and made sure that all details were covered. They worked within our budget, were timely, and provided really out of this world food. We had so many compliments on the food. A friend who loves beef sandwiches said it was the best she ever had. My husband, who loves atomic cake, had asked to have one made for our Friday night party. The bakery had never made an atomic cake before and instead of saying, that's not in our repertoire, they outdid themselves. Not only did they search for an atomic cake recipe (something we were unaware at the time was unique to Chicago-area, it is though!), they made the best one we ever had. Is there ever anything better than having one of "the best" of your favorites. I spent the night before my wedding in sugar bliss from that delicious cake. I still think about it! The flowers, oh the flowers. They were absolutely beautiful. I worked with Illa, to really bring the pictures I sent her alive. She did a great job on the bouquets, centerpieces, and our table. Seriously I cannot wait to see the pictures because she did an absolutely magnificent job. She transformed the room. It was magnificent. Finally, I must again tahnk Liza, who brilliantly coordinated all of the moving pieces. I did not have the ability to plan for such a party and wasn't sure what to get. I relied on her expertise and she provided everything from cups, to garbage bags, all stuff I needed, but would've forgot to ask for. She was a god-send and her help was so appreciated during the chaos of the wedding. Not only that, she was the sweetest woman, my husband and I wanted to invite her to the wedding we loved her so much! Out of town brides, do not hesitate to use Hy-Vee. I know, we have a gut reaction of grocery store, but please let your guard down, they will deliver the value you you are used to. Delicious, timely, awesome! read more

I am rating customer service at this store. It is practically non-existant and rude. I was there after-hours to customer service desk to exchange my $10 for roll of quarters I needed for laundry and I could not wait until Monday when banks open. The girl working there just flat-rate refused to honor my request and even did not make an effort to help me or ask manager for help. The other guy who worked with her and seemed to be lead supervisor said nothing. I went to different Hy-Vee store on Dodge st, and while they said they are not supposed to do this, they were nice enough to ask manager for approval and make an exception. As for groceries, this store has the most awful quality and choice among all Hy-Vee stores in Dubuque. read more

I was a little skeptical of this, when it was suggested that I try the breakfast at Hy-Vee. I decided to give it a shot the next day. Damn was I glad I did. This location had a restaurant inside of the store. Not only a restaurant, a full service restaurant. With a full bar and everything. The breakfast selection was really good. I ended up visiting at least twice more for breakfast, and even stopped in to have a few beers, and watch some college football on Saturday, after a long day at work. Kudos to whoever came up with this idea. Even more genius that they located it right next door to a hotel. I will definitely visit again, if I ever make it back to Dubuque. read more

I don't know if they're aware but we've slept in their parking lot twice. Or rather, I've slept there once but my friends slept there twice because they were rude and didn't take me the second time. But regardless, if you're on a one-night road trip and can't get a hotel or a motel at 3 am, their parking is good for a parking lot. I also don't know if they're aware that I brushed my teeth in their bathroom but I did. I wish I could say I was trolling but this is just who we are and Hyvee is very convenient for that. I called from Iowa City inquiring about the possibility of having a delivery made from the Locust location to the small town of LaMotte. To my surprise, they not only could deliver out of town, but they made the delivery happen within a couple of hours of me placing an order by phone. I believe the associate's name who assisted me is Joy? I hope I got that right. She followed up with all of my requests perfectly! The arrangement that was put together was beautiful and even better than I imagined it to be. HUGE THANK YOU to Joy and anyone who assisted with making this happen today. Myself and my friend ate lunch at Hy-Vee today. We sat down at our booth, and it was filthy. I asked the waiter to clean it and he did. We ate our food, the philly sandwich and I side. It was the Monday special, and it was anything but. The bun was old, and the meat inside of it was cold. The food here flat out stinks.
