Laverne is a bit off the highway and likely doesn't get a lot of folks just passing through. It's…read morenot a big town, most towns around here aren't big. But it has everything a town should have. We stayed at the Country Inn motel for a night because of some bad luck on the road, blowing not one but two rear tires on our truck in the space of a couple hours. Luck picked a bad time for that to happen to us, the day that the temperature dropped 50 degrees and we were stranded with very limited cell service when it was 25 degrees. AAA wouldn't send a repair truck so it was almost 3:00 AM when the closest OHP officer went well beyond the call of duty and brought us to the motel. In the morning we made our way to the Farmer's Co-Op to see what they could do for us. This is where it gets good. They had two matching tires in the size we needed (not a common size) and were able to sell them to us at a reasonable price. The local neighbors were around buying supplies and sitting around the table of knowledge. They offered us hot coffee and donuts and made us feel welcome. One of the Co-Op gentlemen gave us a lift back to our truck and mounted both tires (which needed another trip back to the store for him). I have to tell you we were cold and tired and hungry and needed help, and the people of Laverne and the Farmer's Co-Op bent over backwards to help us. Even gave us a couple of caps and a calendar, both of which are proud reminders of the people who made a bad experience something we can look back on and be thankful if it hadn't happened we would never have got to know how friendly and neighborly the people of Laverne really are. [PS: a few days after this the area was hard hit by devastating fires. Our thoughts and well wishes go out to them]
