I put my kids in Hutchison CDC in November 2015. My son was nearly 4 at the time and my daughter was 8 months. It was probably one of the best decisions I ever made and I'm so grateful my children had this opportunity. My son struggled with behavioral issues at two other preschools in Davis prior to Hutchison. Within 2 weeks at Hutchison, my son was holding a pencil, writing his name, lining up for transitions, sitting at circle time...it was amazing! His personality began to change- he became more calm and happy, and less irritable. He attended the K-Prep program until he went on to Kindergarten at a Davis public school. He was more than prepared for Kindergarten. The teachers he had in the K-prep program (Ms. Jessica and Ms. Kristen) were wonderful- kind and caring and far exceeded my expectations.
My daughter has moved through all of the classrooms- infants, toddlers, twos, and she's now in the preschool (three year old) room. Her social and cognitive development are off the charts. She's engaging in complex socio-dramatic play, knows her numbers and letters, and has developed a passion for art and the Spanish language as a direct result of her exposure to these programs at Hutchison.
The facility is bright and clean. It's a happy place. I never feel guilty dropping my kids off here for the day. They feel like they are at their second home. The teachers truly care for the children. My daughter is so loved. When I come to pick her up, I'll see that a teacher has taken the time to braid her hair. Sometimes a teacher will come up and tell me something funny she said that day, or let me know if she had a good nap or not.
The administrative staff are helpful and organized. In my experience they have been more than accommodating to my children regarding special needs- my daughter had dietary restrictions as a baby, my son was truly a handful- they will work with you to come up with a plan to make sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible. This is a full day care center, so they are geared toward working parents and do not ask for volunteering or parent participation in the classroom. That being said, they give plenty of opportunities for parents to be involved and often hold events at the end of the day, so working parents can attend at pickup, which I really appreciate.
Regarding staff turnover, yes, that does happen here, unfortunately. When a staff member leaves, they often promote from within the center. An assistant teacher may be promoted to head teacher, or a teacher who floats between the classrooms may be promoted to a permanent slot in one of the classrooms. Parents and children are given plenty of notice when this is happening, and they take great care to make the transition as easy as possible for the children.
My only complaint is that I really wish they could offer a kindergarten program. I would have loved to keep my son at the center for another year, as opposed to sending him to a 3 hour kindergarten (which was great!) followed by 5-6 hours of CDC (which was not so great...). read more
