I joined the Kings Cross Snooker Centre around eight years ago; back then there was no smoking ban, the walls were adorned with the usual grainy portraits of former snooker greats, there was no music and no one queued for a table. Five or so years ago the club temporarily closed, underwent a full refurb, and reopened as the Hurricane Rooms! Now, before you go accusing me of looking back with misty eyed nostalgia, I'm pleased to report that the majority of changes have been for the best; for one, those awful, yellowing portraits have gone!
Hurricane Rooms is now a modern snooker/pool club with around ten full sized snooker tables, eight American pool tables, and six English pool tables. There is a fully licensed bar with an unimaginative selection of beers (Grolsch, Carling, John Smiths) and a small kitchen serving up an equally limited selection of food. Well, I say 'kitchen' - there's a microwave on the bar churning out boxes of Micro Chips and Chicago Town Pizzas for around £2.50. There's also a couple of poker tables; they look rather snazzy and give the place something of a decadent feel when being used. And then there's the jukebox, which is something of an oddity on account of its eclectic pre-programmed playlists; hard-house to heavy metal via the Scooby Doo Soundtrack - I kid you not!
But no one goes to a snooker club expecting a pint of the latest local craft beer and a gourmet burger; it's all, or at least it should be, about the tables. The snooker and pool tables in the Hurricane Rooms have to be about some of the best and most affordable tables in London; they are well kept, and most importantly, they run pretty-much straight and at a good pace. Each table (with the exception of a couple of American tables) is situated in an adequate amount of space, which means you won't find yourself taking shots with your cue held almost vertically.
My only gripe with the Hurricane Rooms is that of late it seems to have become something of a venue of choice for office parties, bringing obvious benefits to the owners, but resulting in longer queues at the bar and for tables. Given the location of the club (a five minute walk from Kings Cross) and the spruced up interior, there was something of the inevitable to this.
But even with the dodgy playlists and the office parties, the Hurricane Rooms has to be one the best clubs in London; what it lacks in old school charm it more than makes up for with its excellent location, quality tables, and friendly bar staff, and after a few pints, you'll probably find yourself remembering just how catchy those 80s cartoon theme tunes were!
