Oakwood

A great spot in Roundhay / Oakwood with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. So far I've only…read morebeen around lunchtime, and the menu is huge and varied. Most sandwiches sit in the £4 - £5 range, with a choice of ciabatta or baguette. It's worth going for a baguette, as there's a pretty noticeable size different - if you're paying that much then you may as well get something substantial! Although the food is really tasty and made fresh to order, it's a little disappointing that nothing I've ordered so far seems to come with the option of salad. Everything I've had so far has been grilled meat with cheese - undeniably tasty, but missing something. Even things like chutney or relish have been used sparingly, so I'd expect a little extra something for that £5. I haven't yet eaten in, but everything is available for takeaway. The takeaway bags aren't big enough for the baguettes and are made of thin paper, so if you're driving back to the office with a sandwich you'll need something else to put it in, or end up with greasy seats! Minor flaws, but at these prices it can feel a bit rough. Even cheap places like Deli Chez have decent bags and the option to add salad, more sauce etc. That said, the food is really tasty and the sandwiches are well filled!

Sometimes it's very difficult to fault a place, and I do try. Ok I could take issue with the noisy…read morebaby but I guess it's not their fault or I could point out that I chose the one table which hadn't been cleared (again, my fault because I love a comfy seat) but it was cleared very quickly when I sat there. I felt a little sorry for the lady behind the counter because she was rushed off her feet but she still ran around responding to sundry demands with a smile. The point is, I really liked this place. it has a great menu which isn't wallet straining and they also do special offers on their web site. I'm pretty sure that the menu would contain something for everyone unless you are taking a confirmed cannibal out for a bite (normally I'd make a crack about tasty staff here but I'm a reformed character). As for the coffee, well you'd have to be a tea drinker to not appreciate it. My latte was smooth and frothy and delicious all the way. Even if you are just on a flying visit it's worth trying the lovely brownie.

Headingley

If you're looking for choice, Tasty is a surefire bet when it comes to sandwiches in Headingley. As…read moresoon as you enter the modest downstairs area you can see the huge board of options laid out before you, and a list of 10 special named choices that I presume are their recommendations. As I entered the shop there was already a bit of a queue but it seemed to be swift moving and they had about four staff members on so it was all looking good. I opted for the mozzarella, basil pesto and tomato panini and asked for chorizo as an extra. It came to £4.10 with the added chorizo, which is a little pricier than expected, but still comes under the "lunch for under a fiver" bracket! Whilst I was waiting I noticed some rather intriguing milkshake drinks, so I'm thinking I may have to treat myself next time I'm in. The panini took about five minutes plus to arrive, which was not a problem as I had a nice seat to sit in whilst I waited. You can opt to eat in, upstairs and peruse the free wifi if so inclined, but on this occasion I wasn't stopping. The staff were lovely and friendly and the service was really swift given the volume of orders that were coming in. My sandwich was really delicious, a generous amount of melted mozzarella was the real highlight, but my only complaint was that the tomato made the bread a little too soggy to eat in places. Just something to consider for next time!

Tasty is a fitting, if unimaginative name for this sandwich joint off Otley Road in the heart of…read morestudentville. They pride themselves on using fresh, healthy ingredients to create unique sandwiches, and they succeed for the most part. You can order by phone, online or simply go in and pick your sarnie up. Or, if you've got too much time on your hands (like I did) go and eat your sandwich in the lounge area upstairs and take advantage of the free wifi. You'd think that such a place would perhaps be on the upper end of the pricing spectrum, but there are no such issues - the most you'll pay for a footlong sub (just one of the many choices of bread) is £3.50. One final point - though it brands itself as a fresh, healthy, classy sandwich shop, its best offering is undoubtedly the down-to-earth and shamelessly unhealthy cheese-dog. Mmm.
