I wanted my first review of 2021 to be special, but since we are (still) in this dreadful Covid-19…read morePandemic and my city is currently in lockdown, I have not been out much to discover any new and exciting places to review. I didn't want to start off the year with another grocery store, pharmacy, or gas station review, lol, so I thought "what is a place that is special in my heart that I have not yet reviewed?" Most of the places that my heart holds dear are in my hometown of Toronto, and in the part of town where I grew up. Then it occurred to me, I should review my favourite park in the whole wide world: Cedarvale Park! I grew up within walking distance of this park and spent a great deal of my youth there. It has a huge hill that becomes a tobogganing haven in the winter. How many snowpants did I wear out on that hill? It has a nice paved trail to walk or cycle. It's where my dad taught me how to ride a bike. It's tranquil by the ravine, perfect for a romantic stroll. There's also so much green space for picnics or just to hang out. I spent so much time there with friends in Middle School, as our school was just around the corner...it's since closed down, it's true, you can never go home again :( There's a tennis court there and a baseball diamond too. It's also right next to Phil White Arena where I would go skating all the time with my class while in elementary school. A more recent addition (and recent being a relative term, for me it means since I left Toronto, lol), is the installation of a splash pad for kids. Also a Cricket Field (although this may have been there when I was a kid, I don't remember, lol) and a designated area where dogs can run off-leash. Cedarvale Park is a happy place for me. So I'm starting off the year by reviewing it and hopefully this will mean an auspicious start to 2021 ;)

The off leash area is full of our 4 legged friends. People are enjoying the trails that lead to Cedarvale Ravine. It leads to St Clair West station where there's a workout area in the trees. There's pull up bars, push up benches and signs that indicate the type of exercise you can do. Great spacious park that leads to a trail and can connect to another trail via the Discovery Trails throughout TO.

It's also a 5 minute walk from the Eglinton TTC station if you plan to get there by public transportation. The park itself is a large plot of green space that is regularly maintained by the City of Toronto. There are two open softball diamonds where I have seen league games played. I've even seen the diamonds maintained by the Toronto Blue Jays Community Care Foundation. There's also a regulation soccer field but on some summer weekdays and Saturday mornings, it is converted to about 8-10 mini soccer fields where toddlers between 4-8 years old (my best guess) chase a soccer ball around the field. On down times, it is popular among the dog owners in the area. There is no fenced off-leash area but it is large enough for dogs to run off-leash and play fetch. The latest development is the kiddies play structure. Built over the Fall of 2014 and opened before year's end, the new structure is among the largest I've seen in a public park. There's plenty of apparatuses for the kids to climb, slide down and do. The ground surface is a soft, bouncy synthetic material. It probably saves some kids from crying and saves parents from cleaning up sand in the house. There is also a circular concrete space that doubles as both a labyrinth for people to follow to de-stress and as a wading pool when filled with water. It's been very popular among the children with the hot temperatures we've been having recently. The community centre does offer parking but I don't think they let anyone in until after 10am and similarly, street parking nearby is permit only from midnight until 10am. But like I mentioned earlier, it's a short walk from the Eglinton TTC station and you can even take the 32 bus from the station to get dropped off right in front of the community centre. For me, I like to run laps around the outer edge of the park and there is a hill close to the community centre. Each lap with a run up the hill is 1km so it's a good spot if you're training for a running race and want to track your distance. If I've made the park sound like it has lots to offer, then I've done my job and I do suggest checking it out if you're looking for something to do in the city, especially if you have restless children (or dogs).

Unlike most parks, you'll find no grass or benches here. What used to be a parking lot is now filled with gardens, native plant species, prairie meadow, marsh, and trees. At the other end you'll find a rock "outcropping" (a 650 ton rock, coaxed out of the Canadian Shield and reassembled in the park) The park draws many visitors, tourists and is a great place for celebrity sightings during the Toronto Film Fest. He decided to place it inside a little free library at this park. I loved how cute the little free library looked and I'm a fan of these libraries (one of my cool pastimes that I have picked up during this pandemic) that I decided to check it out last Sunday. I drove along Allen Road and it was easy exiting off the Wilson Heights ramp to get to this park. I parked on Dresden Road and walked over. This park is ideal to sit on one of the colourful Muskoka chairs and read a book. Alternatively, it's the perfect setting to eat lunch. It's surprisingly quiet and pleasant. The little free library is one of the better ones out there. You can look at all the books without opening the latched door. I had a duplicate cookbook that I wanted to add to this library. I placed it between the yarmulke that was still there and the Fifty Shades trilogy that was available. It felt weird and funny. There were a few people out and about. I took a bit of time to walk around the park. It's smack in the middle of a residential area. I'm glad that I dropped by as I was heading over to Vaughan from downtown Toronto. I look forward to coming back to check out the park again and see what books are available at the little free library. Perhaps I'll bring my lunch. (363)
