Eric did a great job of taking a simple outline and doing a fantastic job of coloring. I had a unique request for a pentagram with coloring to match a previous tat of a hummingbird. WOW ! The colors are a mirror image. The shop is wonderful and laid back, It is worth your time to get there and get on the calendar. It is truly worth the short wait to get a time slot. read more

No insight into the tattoo artistry, but had a negative experience with piercings from this shop. Stopped in with my girlfriend for some impromptu, simple cartilage piercings. The piercer Patrick was nice at first, but became really impatient while we decided what to get done. This might have been understandable under normal circumstances, but there wasn't another customer in the shop. The piercings themselves went o.k., he did keep things clean, but then had a lot of trouble with jewelry insertion. Overall, we were happy to have the new holes and tipped him--too generously as it turns out. Both pieces of jewelry on my gf's new piercings came apart after a few weeks. He wasn't able to screw the balls on properly, and they fell off, nearly costing her the piercings. I've had enough work done to know this is only due to inexperience on the part of the piercer. The jewelry he used was crap, externally threaded instead of the internally threaded he said he had. Also discovered that the one good (and expensive) piece of jewelry we brought with us for a simple switch out wasn't tightened security. The worst part is that he pierced her forward helix at an odd angle and directly in front of her rook with a large CBR, making it impossible for her to wear the straight post jewelry she had planned (he knew this but told her she'd have to switch it it later). She will likely have to let the hole heal and re-pierce correctly to complete the look she wanted. Glad we don't have an infection horror story, but super bad technique on the piercer's part means we will not be returning. Perfectly happy to pay twice as much for a skilled artist in the city. (One star for the cute af puppy they had in the back and friendly staff up front.) Beware! read more

Wife and I are on vacation in the Catskills. On the way up we kicked around the idea of getting a little tattoo to commemorate the vacation. So we started calling around. No shop would pick up their phone or call us back after leaving messages. We had basically given up until the last day of our trip when I searched yelp and found Hudson River Tattoos. It was two hours before they were to open but I decided to call anyway. They picked up on the second ring and were into the idea of my wife and I getting matching tattoos. I said we could come right now and he obliged us. We took the short drive over there and were greeted with warmth and professionalism. The tattoos came out great, exactly what we wanted and I couldn't recommend the shop enough. Very clean, nice and cool inside on a hot day, and very friendly and knowledgeable staff. If I ever find my way through these parts again, I will absolutely stop in again. read more

I've gotten three tattoos here, and each experience has been better than the last. The artists have a strong history in the art form, and can accommodate any request. They're also honest about the limitations and technicalities of tattooing, so you won't be given a tattoo that's going to age poorly. If you are seeking tattoo work, no matter where you live in the United States, I would encourage you to get on a plane, get in a car, or a train or the likes, and make a huge running dash for this amazing shop in Hudson, NY. Hudson River Tattoo is run by Pamela Grande and her Tattooing Husband Eric Edward, and as their slogan on their site assures, they are the best of the (expletive) best. All, I REPEAT ALL of my Tattoos will be done by Eric, he's currently done two for me and I'm considering getting at least three more tattoos! Considering I waited an outrageously stupidly long time to get my first tattoo, I'd likely be tattooed from head to toe by now if I'd known that it could be such a wondrous experience. Now, Pam and I admittedly go back a bit, she's an absolutely glorious vocalist and we'd met in NYC when we were both singing at many of the same venues. When I'd heard she moved to Hudson, one of my favorite places on Earth and opened a shop, I knew....HERE would be the place to get my first tattoo. And roughly two years ago, that's exactly what I did. It was such an amazing experience I now have well.....I keep adding to them. I know I'll be getting more. It's not just the amazing atmosphere of friends, I swear, it is that Eric Edward is arguably the premiere tattooist of the world. Perfect work, one look at the gallery on the store website will shock and awe you. However, it gets better. Somehow, when he tattoos you, you feel.....amazing. Amazing like you've had a spa treatment. Amazing like a great facial or a hot stone massage. I do not know why, but it feels GOOD. Oh sure, I guess if you got it in a rough spot you'd feel a little sumpin sumpin, but both of my tattoos, could be described not only as painless, but as PLEASURABLE. I have a series of star patterns on my shoulder and forearm. These stars were done so well that EVERYONE asks "who did these? The line work is astonishing clean!!!" If that weren't enough, the shop is in HUDSON, a town I adore Upstate in my beloved Hudson Valley, full of gorgeous antique shops and great eateries and wonderful vintage clothing stores. Pam and Eric are two of the most amazing human beings I've ever known, Pam is such a positive and warm loving soul, she's pure sunshine, and Eric is a calming zen influence with a great sense of humor and both of them of course are dominated by a love of great music from Slayer to the Doobie Brothers, you'll hear just about everything in the store. The store is also has two wondrous mascots in the form of two adorable French Bulldogs named Dio and Dolly. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about this place. Although they had no space at the time, the lovely woman at the front desk took down our phone number in case they had a cancellation. When she called us later, it was a freaking awesome surprise! We came in and everyone we dealt with was super nice and considerate. Despite being simple line tattoos, there was no attitude from the staff (which can happen at tattoo shops) and all of the lines were clean and deliberate. PERFECT experience.
