Astro-logically speaking this is one of the best teams out there. Considering Houston is the 4th city of America, a huge market and one which likes sports as much as the next town (to some degree), it doesn't have a marquee team that everyone here loves. The Astros have, more than any other, emerged as that team. They're very beloved by the Latin community because of people like Altuve, and because of bringing championships to Houston, a city that needs and deserves them more than most. So yes, the Astros are a very good baseball team which represent the city of Houston better than any of the other teams, although the Rockets are a close second, in terms of putting things on the shelves of the trophy cabinet, and in representing the Latin community, which makes up more than half of Houston's population, and this is probably why you see more of these shirts around than any other team. The Rockets are kinda good and kind of popular, and manage to bring the odd big name to town which is great, and the Texans are just a major disappointment despite having the marquee stand up guy (JJ Watt) on the team for so long. Now we're going to see if they can step out of his enormous shadow. But regardless, the Texans aren't fanatically followed, and honestly that's what happens if you put a major NFL franchise, which is a sport mainly followed by some demographics, in a town that is not famous for those demographics. Houston should continue investing in the Dynamo, the Rockets, and especially the Astros since they're already by far the most beloved team in town.

I researched tour companies in advance of our trip, and I chose "Discover Houston Tours." Phil planned an itinerary and kept in touch with me before our arrival at HOU-Hobby. He communicated with me by phone, text, and email which assured me that I had selected the best tour guide. Our main purpose was to use our "free day" to tour Johnson Space Center. Phil picked us up at the airport and took us on the greatest tour of the Space Center. He guided us to every exhibit, so that no time was wasted. If I had been "on my own," I would never have known how grand the Space Center was. After the Space Center tour, Phil suggested that he had time for a tour of Houston. Phil's knowledge of Houston is unsurpassed. He took us to all the amazing places in Houston, including famous parks, River Oaks, historic sites, landmarks, and an opportunity to admire the skyline and the architectural beauty of buildings and skyscrapers. I went with 7 friends, you enter at Gate 8 off of Clinton Drive, just tell the security guard you are there for the tour. There is a nice plaza to wait at right next to the boats. The parking lot is safe; let's face it, the only folks getting in have to pass security! Oh and by the way, you must make a reservation through their online link. They can take up to 100 people but limit each reservation to 10 so if you have more make more reservations. The boat is hardly ever full. A bit before 10 am one of the employees came out to check everyone in and handed out bottles of cold water which was great as it was almost 90 degrees outside in full sunlight. We boarded and were asked to sit inside while they got underway. One of the shipmates gave a safety talk and then we were free to go outside. The boat moves along at a pretty good pace, every now and then it slows for tug boat traffic. You get to see the industries that are along the ship channel. There are lots of big ships and also small ones. Some are loading or unloading, others are being repaired or a clean coat of paint. The shipmates serve coffee for the adults on the way and after turning around after about 45 minutes they offer cold water and soft drinks. There are so many photo opportunities so take lots of pictures. You are asked to go inside while they secure to the dock, the air conditioning feels great. Then you are on your way. The entire crew was so nice, they were helpful and friendly and could answer questions. Please, if you plan to take children, keep them under control. While not dangerous, there are things to watch for so you don't trip and the doors for the cabin are very heavy and hard to open and shut quickly so a child could easily get hurt. I took the Galveston tour with FTT--We met up at Nobi, a fine, craft-beer mecca here in the Clear Lake area. From there we went to Galveston Bay Brewing Company (an absolute gem that will have a review coming!), Texas Beer Refinery (currently shacked up at the Clear Lake Shores Food Park, as their facilities are under construction) and Galveston Island Brewing Company. All of these breweries were amazing, and completely new to me. The owners or brewers at each facility give you an overview of their processes and beers, and lots of bevs! They seemed genuinely happy to have us at their facilities. Your ticket includes one or more beers at each of the brewery stops and your transportation on a luxury, air conditioned coach. The FTT tour guides are super friendly, and give you snacks! We even made a stop at buc-ee's for bathrooms and beaver nuggets. We initially signed up for the downtown one (aka "the townie"), but I was too sick to go. Worried that I would have to forfeit the tickets because of last minute sickness, I called and asked if we could reschedule. Fresh Tap Tours was very understanding and rescheduled us for "the connoisseur" (clear lake and galveston area), which ended up being fantastic! Jonathan was a great tour guide. We met at Nobi and then went to Texas Beer Refinery, Galveston Bay Brewing Company, and Saloon Door Brewery. Everyone was so knowledgeable and the beer was so good. We tried a variety of beers...the craziest ones tasted like watermelon, dreamsicle, smoked sausage/brisket, or chocolate and peanut butter. We loved all the breweries and will def be going back to visit each one. We had no idea there were so many throughout Houston, let alone in the Clear Lake/Galveston area. And Jonathan was great at offering suggestions for other breweries for us to try as well. Saloon Door hasn't even opened yet, but we were able to stop in and try a few!
